Maybe everyone hasn't had a chance to actually play at both types of cabs, but if you absolutely had a choice, which would you prefer?

Standing.
Standing is a lot more comfortable.
standing. but i usually use a stool depending on the game.
Despite not having played an actual arcade game(barring a game here and there at a pizza parlor)in what seems like years, I'd have to say I prefer stand up.
What in the world are you people smoking?
I always have to bend down to stand-up cabs, so unless they make standup cabs higher, I have to go sitting down on this one.
I have to go with the sit down units. The sit down version of (Vector) Star Wars was like being in an X-Wing fighter. The stand up version just did'nt capture the atmosphere of the sit down unit. Also the lack of speakers behind your head is another factor.
Sit-down, because of health problems. But for most of my life, I had no preference.
Stand up for shooters and fighters, sit down for less twitchy stuff.
That sounds about right.Quote:

Sitting. I don't stand up to play PS2, so I won't stand to play an arcade game. Yeah, there's a difference in the control unit, but not enough for me to *want* to stand.
I prefer to play arcade games the same way I pee, standing up.
Standing, barring racing games. Also, the old mini-cabs where you have to kneel to play the games, are the worst fucking things ever in arcades. I've only used them for SNK games, and I pray that they have never been used for anything else.
Arcade unit at an arcade: Standing.
Arcade unit at my house: Sitting.
What about an arcade unit at a friend's house?
We need a tie-breaker.
I hafta agree with you there. Mini Cabs suck for someopne like myself who's 6'2".Quote:

Never seen one... :)Quote:

Sitdown. Although I've never played a proper sitdown cab, most arcades I've been to recently have stools at the ready. I've been playing Raiden Fighters Jet sitting down, and it works beautifully. I'd imagine a cabinet designed with this in mind would be even better.
We always stood when we had an arcade; the only games that had stools (yes stools, we never had fancy shmancy sitdown units) were puzzle/shootemup games. To this day I cannot sit and use a stick at the same time.
I almost always sit down, except in tourney play. Everyone always stands then, unless it's just a casual weekly tourney.
Both types of cabs are fine, since you can just use different height stools... I guess this means I'd vote 'sit-down', eh?
I find that I'm a little too tall for a lot of stand-up cabs and have to crouch a bit, so being able to sit on something makes things easier.
Same here.Quote:

sitting, except for fighters, where standing is better.
I don't really have a preference but it seems like I can concentrate better standing up. In a 1-on-1 versus (ie. fighting game) competition I'd rather stand.
Since the best reason to go to an arcade is the racing games, it's all about sit-down.
I always sit down regardless. Stools for the tall cabinets and seats or whatever for the sit downs.
I really liked the head to head cabinets they use in Japan too. Trying to squeeze next to somebody in a crowded arcade on an undersized cabinet just sucks. I can't press their taunt button anymore but oh well :)
Depends on the game and the type of "Sit Down" that it is.
Red Baron sit down, for example, rules.
Tempest sit down, while not bad, isn't preferred over the stand up.
I prefer the stool + stand up gaming technique. ;)
Christ, sitdown.
Standing up is the most awkward thing ever, considering my wrists hurt after a mere 20 seconds of playtime. Awful.
Standing up, except for racing games (or the old Star Wars games). I hate using stools, and it makes you look lazy when you're the only one using a stool among a bunch of guys all standing. Plus, I just can't really use a stick sitting, not sure why.
I wish I had the option to sitdown while I'm playing a fighting game in the arcade here.
I'm 5'10", but my long legs give me problems when I'm having to lower myself ( bend over slightly ) so I can play them.
In my end of Louisiana, for fighters of shmups(what little you see of them) there is not such thing as a sit down cab, so I will have to vote standing. :(
JM
I don't think there are anywhere. Most arcades have stools sitting around.
You could only take the INTENSE ACTION of DRAGONS LAIR "Where you CONTROL THE ADVENTURE!" While standing up.
Definitely prefer to sit down. So much more immersive when you play some games. Depends on the cabinet really.

The arcade I frequent (8 on the Break in Dunellen, NJ) doesn't have any cabs that are sit down but they have pleanty of stools. I usually grab a stool and sit down while playing if I can. Especially for Fighting games and Beatmania.
Sitting rules, if I can find it.
Sit-down. You stand-up guys are weird.
It depends on the type of game.
Standup generally works best for fighting and gun games IMO, while I prefer sitdown for shooters and puzzle games. I own a SNK Kural 25 sitdown cabinet myself.
Five bucks says that if if US cabs were sit down and Japanese cabinets were upright, you'd prefer upright.Quote:

Stand up. Sitting with a joystick feels... weird?
No, it's because upright is stupid and inpractical or you're shit at games and get knocked off the machine on your first credit so the discomfort doesn't bother you. Some of the reasons people are giving here are so daft. Can't play unless standing up? How do you play fighters at home then?Quote:

If I plan to camp out at one machine for awhile, I'll grab a stool. Most of the time, espically when playing fighters, I rather prefer standing up.
I rarely see Japanese sit-down cabinets in arcades (at least the ones I've been to), so standing up at stand-up cabinets feels more natural.
With controllers or kneeling with sticks.Quote:

it honestly depends on the game.
racing/flying/etc is always a sit down.
fighting games are always stand up(i dont care if japan has sit cabs, if you want to be able to play correctly and not get gimp wrist by the time yer 23, you need to stand).
old school games(popeye/galaga/final fight/etc) are standing up. but if i get an ashtray, then it's time to sit down and own.
any type of music game without the title "dance" and or "pump" in the titles....sit down.
your almost as bad as that homo that told me SF3:3rd Strike had "class" because Dudley throws roses.Quote:

 MrWhitefolks has gone mad!
will: i swear to god me and 88mph are the same fucking person sometimes.
why the fuck would you want to practice at home where there is no competetion anways? even practicing juggles doenst matter because the stipulations are always on the fly during live play.
OOOO! BEATING THE CPU DOES WONDERS FOR UR SKILL! HAHAHAHA MY PATTERN OWNING SKILLS R DA B3ST!!!1
Don't confuse mad with retarded.Quote:

Heh maybe 88mph is your long lost cousin.
I agree practicing at home sucks, but unless more fighting games go online the only way to play them for competition is in the arcade which I can barely go out of my way for since its in the city.
Every once in a while I'll go but C-town fair doesn't have Guilty Gear so meh.
Practice with the CPU will get you nowhere. You can learn combo's and juggle traps, but a live opponent will always beat you out of your weakness when you fight someone good.
I'll take sitdown with cocktail arcades, everything else has to be on foot or I'll never use the stick correctly.
Since 99% of the time when I go to arcades I only play fighting games, I'll go with stand-up, since it's MUCH easier to use a joystick while standing.
1. Invite friends over or go to a friend`s place for competition, duh. Training modes are just fine for testing stuff out and in VF4E`s case, it can teach you how to play the game. I agree playing against the CPU is useless, VF4E is different due to the human style AI in quest mode.
2. I can hold my own here in Tokyo just fine at ST/HF/TS. VF4E is harder though as the arcades I go to everyone is around 5th with many tsuimono. Thank you for your concern.
The only game I really can't stand playing standing up is CRAZY TAXI! That game drives me crazy if its in a stand up cabinet. I feel like I am playing Dance Dance Revolution whenever I try to do a simple Crazy Dash :) I really prefer Crazy Taxi as a sit down cabinet. Also, I prefer sit downs in general for racing games because I don't think too many are stand up. Although maybe I should try playing Daytona USA 2 standing up some time :)
For everything else besides racing games I prefer to stand up. Playing a fighting game or a shooter sitting down is just maddening...
I'm used to standing, but sit-down sounds awfully nice...
I'm taller than that and I've never had a problem with arcade cabinets.Quote:

No... not on a video game site. Never.Quote:

I've heard that mini-cabs are made as standup cabs for kids. Really small from what I've seen of them...much smaller than a capcom impressa or super neo 29" (biggest fighting game sitdown cabs).Quote:

However... sit a mini cab on a milk crate, and grab a chair, and life is good.
By the way... don't actually do that.
I've used sit-down cabs where it's manditory - racers, VOOT, etc. For 'sit-down' cabs, I've only played at one once (King of Fighters 2000), and it was heaven.
Definitely sit down. If there's no sit down cabs, I'll grab a stool. Never just standing.
Versus cabinets for life! :D
I like Japanesey style sitdown cabinets for anything other than fighters. I'm too heavy handed and require the American style sticks as well as firm footing when I play my 3rd Strike though. I also don't like the sticks on the sitdown cabs for fighting games.
