DVD Player Dead

Here's the story so far. I got one of those cheap Apex AD-1000 DVD players from Wal-Mart on Black Friday like two years ago. Recently, I picked up Legend Ultimate Edition on DVD. Popped it in and began watching it. All of a sudden it froze. I got all pissed because I didn't want to have to return a DVD to Best Buy. The last time I had to I almost killed the Customer "service" worker.

Well, I tried ejecting the disc. No response. The remote is faulty so I tried numerous times. No luck. I then tried the eject button on the unit, again no luck. I shut the thing off by the main power button. Waited a second, turned it on. The words "Disc Loading" popped up in the corner as usual. They stayed there for what seemed like 5 minutes, before giving me the lovely little "No Disc" message. I've since tried the DVD player with numerous discs over the past week. I always get the no disc message. After looking on the net this is apparently a common problem.

My question is, do you think a lens cleaner disc would help at all? The only solutions I've seen are much too complicated and this was too cheap to justify taking to the repair shop. Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new DVD player when I have the cash? I've got at least ten dvds sitting here unwatched and I'm going crazy.... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Including cheap, but functional DVD player recommendations. I just want a bare bones player. Thanks in advance.

Apexs are notorious for breaking. Best Buy is selling a low-end name brand (Samsung, I think) for $80 right now. Go buy that one. Or try Fry's.

Stick with name brands. Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, JVC, Mitsubishi, etc.

Or just buy Daewoo 5700, which is only $70-80 and can be converted to be Region Free(very easily) and has PAL playback. I have one for a year now, and it works great.

I would recommend getting a KLH DVD player, I was able to get a very nice one for $50 on sale, and I would imagine that, at worst, the thing isn't more than $100 or so not on sale. It's got nice features like mp3 playback, CD playback, MPEG playback (which rules beyond beleif) and is light as well. I hope this situation works out for you, and that you can end up getting the DVD out of the player. I bought an Apex as well and it stopped working but if you can beleive it, I hit it with my hand on the top pretty hard and on the side and it started working again.

I usually don't use it since the PS2 DVD player has a better player and the pic quality is better for some reason but I guess you get what you paid for.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll just pick a new DVD player up in a month or so. I've really overextended myself so a new DVD player just doesn't fit into the budget. I'll keep your advice in mind when I finally get a new player.

Oops, I did get the disc out after I first got the No disc error. I must've forgot to put that...heh. I've tried at least ten different DVDs and they all give the No Disc message.

You can find the KLH from Best Buy for 39.99 this week. However, if you're going to do it, get the 2 year service plan for an extra 30 bucks, because you will more than likely need it.

Toshiba rocks. I got a $130 model last year, and it's been nothing but perfection for me.

I think they're selling it for like, $90 now.
