Me...I've always been a sucker for updated play mechanics, prettier graphics, better music, and just all around, um...betterness. So Super Mario 2 it is.

I really got into the play mechanics of the original mario bros. long before I got to see how different the sequel turned out. Both were plenty different as I could describe part 1 being a challenge for the action/platform elite, while part 2 had a more open and free roaming experiance.
But come down to think of it, part 1 was a real nail-biter, so I'll have to stick my vote for that one. I was also into the lost levels which was a real chaos event in itself.
Which Super Mario Bros. 2? The American (sprite-swapped) one or the one we know as The Lost Levels?
I'm assuming he means the U.S. one, in which case, it gets my vote over the original game. I find the second game to be far more fun than the first game, due to the more diverse gameplay.
I voted for the first. I dug 2's play mechanics but sometimes it got old faster than the original. Plus jumping on foes is just more fun.
The original is too legendary and groundbreaking to be bested. SMB2/DokiDoki is a splendid game, but lacks the universal appeal and level design that SMB offers.

I prefer the original, as a game and not as a videogame icon. I couldn't abuse a turtle walking down a staircase in 3-1 for 900 men in SMB2. :chick:
Super Mario Bros. was a great series, if I had the choice of 3 I would pick it - you can't go wrong with the racoon :p
But in this particular poll, I am going with the original. First off, because it was the original, and I played it to death (yet it was the 1 game that took me forever to beat)... and mainly, I just prefered the gameplay.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) is still my favorite.
Even over SMB3.
I vote for Super Mario Brothers. I think the game play and the controls in SMB were just a little tighter than Super Mario Brothers 2. SMB2 always seemed too floaty and slippery to me. SMB just has more classic platforming moments than SMB2 as well.
While Super Mario Brothers was not the first game I ever played and enjoyed (that award goes to Dig Dug), it was the first game that showed me how "magical" gaming can be. Seriously, I hate to use the word magic but SMB just had it in spades. Half of my childhood memories involve playing Super Mario Brothers with all my friends...I remember how overjoyed I was every time I beat a single level. I remember how confused I was when I got to Bowser's final castle. I remember calling my friends on the phone and discussing with them how to actually get to the end of it. So, I guess that was the first time I ever got lost in a game as well. Then when I actually beat the game it felt like it was the greatest achievement of my 6 year old life. After my experiences with SMB, SMB2 can not possibly hold up to SMB.
However, this being said, the one major thing I admire about Super Mario Brothers 2 is its vision. I love being able to play as Luigi, Toad, and the Princess. I also liked all the villains. I believe Super Mario Brothers 2 had the best world and the best villains in any Mario game. I always remember the battles against Wart, Fry Guy, Mouser, that Giant Crab boss in world 5, the shy guys, those masks that chased you when you had a key, the albatrosses, the pink thingy that spit eggs at the end of each level... uhh...and everything else :) Super Mario Brothers 2 was wonderful for its vision alone...even if the control and over all platforming was not quite as tight as SMB. SO, I have said it before and I will say it again...I would like to see some of these characters come back in a future Mario game. Its sad to see that Wart, Fry Guy, and Mouser just fell off the face of the earth after becoming cartoon stars. I wouldn't even mind seeing some of these characters in like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, or Mario Golf. It can't really hurt...
Back to the point though...I take SMB over SMB2. However, if you are asking for my favorite Mario game I will say neither 1 nor 2 because Super Mario Brothers 3 is by far the best in the series.
SMB2 has always bugged me for some reason. I haven't played it in a while though, so maybe I should give it another chance. But in right now, I have to go with the original.

AND, some more things about Super Mario Brothers 2...I liked the sand levels. For some reason when ever I would dig to the bottom of the levels I would pretend I was playing Dig Dug. I liked the trick in world 4 where you could pick the princess and just float to the end of the level. Super Mario Brothers 2 was a damn fine game. I hope my previous comments about it didn't lead anyone to believe that I do not like it. In actuality I rate Super Mario Brothers 2 much higher than Super Mario World, Mario 64, and Mario Sunshine. Overall, I place SMB2 in third place right after SMB (2nd place) and right before Super Mario World.
I play Super Mario Bros. 2 more than any of the NES Mario adventures on my All Stars/World cart.
I agree with what ManifiedPlaid said, it's too bad that some of the characters from this game never made encore appearances in other Mario adventures.
Super Mario 2 also features one of the best endings of all-time.
Super Mario Brothers for real. I have Super Mario Deluxe with my GBA stuff whenever I travel somewhere, but Super Mario Advance will always stay behind.
When it's original VS original? I would still take Super Mario Brothers any day. I just get bored of SMB2 a lot faster...and besides..it's not even a real Mario game :p

SMB2 for me. I prefer the grab and throw enemies gameplay. SMB2 is my favorite NES game.
You'd lose before you could hit that many extra lives.
As a sidenote, although it is the same game, I like DX better than SMB1 because of the "score per level" mode.

I also pick SMB over the American SMB2. SMB2 is great, but it's a little too easy and not as enduring as the first.

I voted SMB2, since I have more memories playng and having more fun.
Don't get me wrong, I love SMB1, but I was only 6, and a lot of it was frustrating back then. I actually never beat SMB1, but as I got older, I never felt like I had to. I only got up to Bowser's castle, and could never figure out the maze. Oh well.
But SMB2, even though not being a Mario game originally, had improved gameplay, graphics, sound, just about everything, including fun (at least for me). Plus the ending ruled.
But like others here say, SMB3 is still the all-time greatest Mario game. I actually made a vow not to play it again, after deciding to play straight (aka NO WARP FLUTES), getting to Bowser, getting him to one floor of bricks before he would die, and my cousin hitting the adapter, resetting my entire game. It's now a traumatic experience playing it, tarnished by that horrible memory. :mad:
super mario bros is the only Mario game I loved. It was fun because it was the first platformer and I was a little kid. I thought the other ones kinda sucked. Except Mario 64, that was cool.
So I only really liked the original. I enjoyed Mario 64 and didn't like the rest. So it's an easy pick for me.
I'd have to go with Super Mario Bros. The Mario 2 (US) was enjoyable, but it just was'nt as addicting as the original Super Mario, or it's followup Super Mario 3.
SMB 1.
SMB 1 is better than SMB2 but Lost Levels owns them both.
Even though the cart is a compliation mostly, Super Mario All Stars kicks an obscene amount of ass.
SMB2 is my favorite of Mario's NES outings. It may be the easiest, but it's also the most fun.
Part 1 is leagues better then part 2. 2 was a really cool game but I hated a bunch of the areas in it. I love every inch of SMB 1. It just seems to be perfect. I never did finish the Lost Levels. I think I need to dig out my Mario All Stars and kick it's ass.
hands down it's smb2 all the way. so much crazy shit to do that wasnt available in smb. you could hit multiple enemies with a veggie, then jump and grab it out of mid air.
AND it had WAY more exploitable glitches in it than in SMB(yes, even cooler than jumping over the flag pole on 3-3).
with so much more to do, it was just a better experience. that and the characters were alot more diverse(not just the playable guys, but also the baddies).

I was young then, and I must've sucked, since I can do it in my sleep nowadays, but beating SMB took like 3 years of off and on playing. SMB2 took like 2 weeks.

I like 2 best. Me and my brother moved to Portland and during the period where we had yet to make any friends, we'd beat it daily. I agree with Whitefolks wholeheartedly.
SMB1 was WAY harder, but great of course.

SMB2 for me. Just as SMB1's enemies were memorable, 2's were just as unique. Phanto, Shyguys, Snifits, and Birdo! I love any Mario game that features SMB2's baddies, including Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, and Paper Mario!
