I have joined the dead PS2 army

So I got my fliptop mod today and I went to install it right away. I had to ask my Dad if I could borrow his percision screwdriver set.

See, my dad is fairly good with handling computers as in, assembling them. He sucks at actually using them, but the technical aspect he has down.

Im not even sure what went wrong, the picture below was taken after I attempted to play a game and after the horrible grinding noises.

I'm pissed about it since I won't be able to play Initial D for a while, but thats about it. I don't plan on repairing it or getting it replaced for a while since I'm going to be buying computer parts for Half-Life 2 for the next month or so.

So does this count as the first FlipTop horror story on TNL? :p

Oh, and if anyone has any idea on a quick fix, please tell!

what is a flip top mod?

Apparently something that can make a PS2 smell like bacon if installed incorrectly.

It is a cheap non modchip method for playing some imports, but has been deemed a good way to make your PS2 die early by many different sources. It is pretty much a new shell for your PS2 with a door on the top of the system. You have to dissassemble your system & put the insides into the new shell. This goes along with a boot disc that will let you play imports, but not all imports. Psyvivar doesn't work, & the Death Label mode in DDP DOJ won't work with it either.

Damn, I need a good way to play PS2 imports, and I don't like the sound of "doesn't play all games". Are Japanese PS2's still more expensive than black market infants?

Are there any reliable mod chips that have a reasonably small number of solder points?

The new JPS2 was supposed to launch a while ago I think (June). A little quieter, DVD remote included. At the time, it was going to be 207 USD. So if you imported it, it wouldn't be the ridiculous 330 or something that everyone was asking for just a few months ago. I don't know if it's out yet though.

The moral of the story is that I don't want to send my system away and be without DDR Max for a significant amount of time while someone installs a chip, but I really need to be able to play imports since Dodonpachi and Beatmania IIDX 3rd are just sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

From the sounds of it this flip top crap is extremely unreliable...if he had done his homework, he would have realized that and perhaps gone with a mod chip instead, which has a much, much higher success rate.

I am sorry to hear about what happened to Sl1p... but I still plan on getting a fliptop. One unfortunate story is not going to scare me away. I have read about plenty of people using them with no problems. I have heard plenty of people's mod chip problems anyway so it's no worse. The people who tend to bash the fliptop seem to be the people who have already spent a lot of money on an import system or a costly mod-chip + installation. As far as I am concerned the fliptop is still much much cheaper and easier. As long as it's compatible with the 3D Ages games, I'll probably get one eventually.

Well, it's your system & money, but at least be sure that the games you want to play are compatiable. It will also be a crap shoot as to whether or not any games you are going to want in the future will work with it.

Same can be said for a mod chip. I don't doubt that Sony already has some sort of Anti-Mod Scheme in the works. A J-Ps2 is still the best (Albeit most expensive) bet.

The only imports which don't work have multiple executibles on the disc. Psyvariar boots up, runs through the intro, and goes to the menu where you select the arcade or revision game. This is the point where it needs to check region again and kills the game. This also happens with DDP: DOJ when you select Death Label (the main game is playable).

If the rumored Psyvariar budget release of Revision only does occur, it shouldn't have this problem.

As for other games that have a problem with the flip-top, well, if you're buying your games you shouldn't have a problem.

And I have no idea how your Dad messed up the installation Slip. I had never opened a console up before installing mine...

If you have the resources, get a modchip or a JPS2. If you want a cheap solution, this works.

Couldn't you just do a quick re-swap of the game at that point? That's how I play most of my import PS1 games. I gave up on anti-mod codes (they never work for me), so I just do a second swap midway through the load where it checks the region again or whatever it does. Works every time. Could that be the same deal for fliptop mods on those few games?

I don't want many imports. I mainly want the 3D Ages games. So as long as they are compatible I am good to go (unless Sega actually brings them out in NA, of course). We'll see. :)

The fliptop does work for Initial D. I got one solely for this game and then I found out it wasn't two-player. :wtf: The biggest problem with the fliptop is accidently ripping the ribbon in half when putting on the case. I don't know what happened with yours since the ribbon is now toasted and your ps2 makes grinding noises. But you could always replace the ribbon somehow if getting your ps2 to turn on is an issue.

Yes, no 2 player (Not even system-link) is pretty shitty. Still, the game is amazing.

The power ribbon is fine. You know the plastic part that you take from the PS2 drive and put into the top of the flip top.

My dad put that in upside down when I wasn't looking.

ALL games work with the messiah 2. import, dvdr9 burns....EVERY game. and sony has nothing on the mod scene. anytime something is released or a new system revision comes out theres always a new chip or if you're playing burns theres always a patch if needed. theres lots of pro installers that get your system back within the week and for $115 including shipping chap and install id say its not that expensive considering how much you pay to import games in the first place. not getting a quality mod installed is just being lazy and cheap. and the same people that say a mod is expensive are always the ones that plunk down $300 on a jap system they dont need. $300 vs $115? there's no issue.

Actually, I've never had a problem with a Sony product (Walkman, Discman, PS1, PS2, TV, etc.). Just lucky, I guess. :)

I was on the phone with Sl1p trying to help with the install (since I have made my concerns about . Both he and I were going "NO YOU PUT IT IN *THIS WAY*" at his Dad and you would THINK he could understand directions. But no. I'm sure the white disc smashed the spindle and blah blah blah, you know the rest.

As for the fliptop, I don't know where the fuck all this hatorade is coming from. I installed my fliptop myself, I haven't had any problems with it destroying my PS2 or whatever, it boots everything I want to play without any trouble...I don't see what the problem is.

So long as whoever is installing it isn't a retard ala Sl1p's dad, it's less than half the cost of all the prices people have been quoted for sending out your PS2 to someone else to mod it, and it does the trick just fine.

So, when Sony finds a way to block the current mod chip, then what? Oh that's right, you have to get a new version installed. More money down the drain. Unless you are only planning to play a few current imports or you are a pirate, a mod chip is a risky investment. I never said curent games do not work. However, there is a big possibility that future games may be incompatible. If you have to send your Ps2 to someone to have it modded everytime Sony foils a chip, the cost will add up. Not everyone has a local shop that will mod the system, nor does everyone have the knowledge or ability to install it themselves.

To put it bluntly, unless you want a mod chip for pirating or homebrew stuff, it is much safer to go with a J-Ps2. More expensive? Maybe. Easier? Hell yes. Obviously, if you only plan on buying one or two imports a J-Ps2 is silly, but then, so is a mod chip. I paid $250 w/ free shipping for my Japanese Ps2 and I'm much happier with it than I would be spending $115 messing with a system that is notorious for messing up as it is. A Japanese Ps2 was right for me. Is it right for everyone? No. Is it still the best option? IMO, yes it is.

Can't you just use the Unreal trick? I think you put that game in, and when it boots you swap something else in. (I'm going off a fading memory of a rumour, so bear with me.)

My problem with a chip is that my PS2 is getting old. I wanted to play DDP DOJ a couple of months ago, so I did some wheelilng & dealing & got a JPS2. If I would have spent $115 on a chip for my US PS2, I would be VERY upset about the Disc Read errors I started getting last week.

PS2 - $300 (bought it on launch, got a replacement about 2 years ago throught a warranty) + Mod chip - $115 = $415 modded PS2 that is dying. Even buying a new one at $179 & a $115 mod chip is more than a JPS2. That math doesn't work for me.
On top of that, the PS2 is a known junk heap, I also wouldn't want someone monkeying around in a new one, because that just seems like flirting with trouble. I know these people know what they are doing, but that's just me.

I'll just have to deal with it when US PS2 finally dies, but I shouldn't have to worry about that for quite a while with my JPS2.

I think once I had a DVD where the picture was covered in green pixels when played on my PS2, but otherwise no.

Well, actually, I did have a PS1 glitch up on me once, but I had used it for years with no problems..then I picked up the smaller, redesigned PSone and stuck the old PS1 in the closet. After a while, I brought the old PS1 to Gamestop to trade it in, and they tested it in the store, and boom- the FMV and sound of any game they put in was choppy. It was fine for years and suddenly, it was choppy. So I brought it to EB, where they never test anything, and traded it in there. :)

Overall, though- no problems with Sony stuff for me. As I said, I must be lucky.

Can't these companies only make certain games region encoded, and make the other games play everywhere? And then make it fairly simple for people to mod the system to play foreign games?

Sl1p, sorry to hear about your PS2. If it were me, I'd get a JPS2 when the price goes down to around $100 or when the PS3 comes out. I don't care for modding systems, since the two mod experiments I've attempted (modding a PSX and a Saturn) killed both systems.

If there are any JPS2 games I would actually consider worth importing, then they will still be around when I deem the JPS2 affordable. For the moment, I still have some JSaturn games to seek out. :D

with what....a year or two left in the ps2's lifespan i find it hard to believe they'd actually come up with something to deter the current chips. it seems everyone talks like the jap ps2's never die or something.....is there something i dont know? id rather have one system with a chip (that might mess up) which would be $285 both brand new then 2 systems (import and domestic) which come to $425 both brand new with both having the same fail rate as the one chipped system. still the best option? IMO yes it is :)

Disc read errors = NOT the death of your system. Open it up and clean the damn disc lens. All will be well for a good 5 months, until you need to do it again.

Anyway...what exactly is so dangerous about the flip-top mod? It sounds as simple as replacing one case with another.

Little to nothing. Sometimes mistakes can happen, but the risks are far lower than trying to solder something into your ps2. I've had mine for months and it works perfectly fine.

Not once for my six-year old modded PSX and the PS2 I found on eBay two years ago.

By comparison, I've seen a SNES and a Dreamcast die, and my Xbox has a very finicky DVD drive.

Don't you just move the PS2 guts from one case to another?

This is the basic gist of the FlipTop.

Take off the top of your PS2 case
Move the power/eject buttons over to the fliptop case
Move the memory card slots over to the fliptop case so they don't look naked
Take off the cover of the DVD drive
Screw back on case

Yet SOMEWHERE IN THAT..Something went horribly wrong. You're supposed to take this little white cup from the DVD drive and put it on the top of the fliptop so it can catch the spindle. My dad put that in backwards when I wasn't looking and didn't catch it before I tried it out. WahWah~

But yes, it SHOULD BE painfree...like I said, freak accident.

Eh... import-ready bootdisc, sturdy kitchen knife, 30 sec popping the tray door off, much cheaper than any of the aforementioned solutions. ;)

(It's a Sony product - the drive is going to die anyway...)

Considering that I'm going to be spending around $800 bucks this month on computer parts, I'm not terribly considered with the extra $44.95 to repair the PS2. I probably won't even notice I just pissed away the money on such a silly mistake.

I generally have more tolerance for rude but somewhat funny images as opposed to naked verbal assaults. But that could very well be a mistake on my part. I tend to have a high tolerance for sarcasm, so I tend to let a lot of things go, but that might not be best for the community.

I will say that, first, this thread, and then the long threads here and at Neomega have really made me think about our standards of conduct and whether or not they're acceptable.

ive noticed that theres a select few that dont contribute much at all to the community and just bring a lot of threads down into STUFU newbie wars. its getting really tiring.

Mairu has been asking for the ban stick for quite a while, he rarely posts anything without a veiled or outright insult included. He isn't really trying to be witty or sarcastic either.

I have a tendency to lash out when I see something really stupid, but I honestly try to curb this.

i mistakingly stepped into his one review (which is now like 3 pages of flame at least). i was harped one time for "pulling a thread down" because of my comments but it happens in like 75% of every other thread from select "others" and its fine. kinda pisses me off.

No your not luky, you just take care of your systems. I've never had a system break on me or have any other type of problem. But that's because I (unlike many people) do not drop, hit, neglect to clean, pull controllers harshy from, or fuck around on the inside of my systems.
