does this not belong in sound-off?
There's far too many people who use their vcr's to record rentals as opposed to those who buy their copys. Plus getting them to convert to "widescreen" isn't gonna be easy because they'd rather sacrifice the details to FILL the picture, like they've been brought up on...
Game piracy compares nothing to this as it's been happening by just about everyone since 85. Hell, even 88 is nothing but small potatoes. j/k
no, because it's also associated with video game systems that serve as DVD players too :chick:
but...whatever. *moves*

Preach on, Brother Voltz. My parents are EXACTLY like this, nomatter how much I try to convince them that wider is better, they like to hang on to full screen.Quote:

Me: But, mom, you have NO IDEA how much of the real picture you're missing by watching it fullscreen!
Mom: I don't care, I just don't like those black bars which take up so much of the screen.
Me: *groan of frustration*
I don't think I'll ever convince them. Even my dad doesn't like DirecTV and wants to go back to cable once we move. Over 2 years we've had that DTV system and he never bothered to memorize his favorite channels even.
I guess it's tough to change with the times sometimes...
And it'll take time to root out the use of VHS, which won't go away alltogether for some time until good, cheap DVDRW players which can record programs off of TV become reasonably priced and widely available.
Hell, even nowadays casette players are still widespread, and I still see even the occasional 8-track, and how dead have THOSE two formats been for some time? :D
heh, I have a friend who spends time looking for 8-tracks at garage sales and you really should see his collection. He's got enough AC-DC in there! :pQuote:

I think what makes this hard comes down to what kind of tv they have. Some of the newer types are made for widescreen so there are no "black bars" to worry about, so as they become more widespread, they'll hopefully become cheap enough for people to become interested. Of course they may still wish for widescreen to be dead and over with...
Not for a couple more generations. All them old folk need to die off that are resistant to change. They're also the same people that pull out their check books at the super market.
well i think you have alot of factors to look at
like some people have quite large VHS libraries and it would be quite expensive to replace them if you can find all your movies
price yes they are cheaper but like its been mentioned you cant record TV shows to DVD yet for cheap i mean some one can go to the store and buy a 40 $ vcr and buy a blank VHS tape for what like 50 cents to a buck to tape their favorite shows right now if you want a DVD burner to do that youll spend like a grand on a dvd burner and how much are blank dvds now like 15 bucks
OUCH!
Me i have a DVD/VCR in one combo deally works really fucking well
but till i can get a cheap dvd burner that can tape live shows, and tape hdtv signals a vcr will always be an aspect in my home and i think so for most people
i think also you have alot of people who may not be into the extras that DVDs offer and say well why should i spend another 100 bucks to get a DVD player i can see the same movies on VHS
so till most movies only come ou t on DVD only then i think your still going to have a large portion of people only having VCRs that and cheap recordable DVD sets are the two things keeping the VCR in peoples homes
Anyone still watching VHS shouls buy some of my thousands of VHS tapes from me.
Yeah, I guess being able to record affordably could be another valid factor but goddamnit, VHS just sucks so fucking much and even more so when you record from such a low source as your TV/cable signal. Go TiVo & DVD and be done with it fucking cheap asses.
