What does everyone think of the new look of TNL? Personally, I really liked v 2.0 and don't like the new look at all.
I like the current look so far, barring smaller text. Why is this in sound off, wouldn't the feedback board be more appropriate?
I miss the old look already, as well as the Galaga shields. Seems a lot more personalityless without them now :(
its ok. the thread previewing is sweet though.
It's fugly and generic, but they assure us it's a work in progress, so I can deal.
Yeah, the old TNL Classic had a look and feel all it's own, but now it looks too much like those other cluttered messages boards that I strive to avoid and hate surfing for just that reason.
Anything for progress, I guess. :P
Everything is so rough :( Right now the look of the forums has no flow or style to it. Also, everything feels needlessly bigger. It's all weird.
I want the Galaga shields back!
It's poop, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
I think we should give them a couple of weeks before we have the "official" poll on this. They are trying as hard as they can to get everything the way everyone wants it. "work-in-progress".
Nonetheless, as of now, I voted the second option.
Some of the changes are confusing, and werent working right at first(aka quick reply), but now its getting into norm again.
And I need to find the theme I was using before with nice black background.
I prefer the Old Style.
I'm not complaining, and I'll take whatever it is, but my preference is the Old.
I forsee a boost in the amount of posts, since posting again doesn't automatically add to your last post (within a certain amount of time).
Like this...
Yes, I noticed that as well. And I miss the how old boards were displaying the list of members currently browsing that board. :(

You are slipping, Comrade.
I know. 88 been busy posting left and right. Post counts are not of that importance to me anymore. I still ahead of Jeremy though.
I sorta like it. Its a work in progress, so I imagine it'll only get better. The users cureently viewing this thread is something I've always wondered if it would be possible.

No big difference imho.
Though, as others have said it does feel a bit on the big side. Some tweaking with some of the table width/margins/padding/etc/etc should take care of that nicely.
It's unprofessional but it needs to be done.

On the serious side, though, it's better that the upgrade was now than later. Had it been later on and the site was even more intertwined with the forum database, it would have caused a lot more site downtime than the 2 hours it took me to upgrade the other day. Themes will come and go, so you shouldn't even be worrying about those.

I liked the old style better. That one was pretty distinctive, whereas this one looks like every other message board in existence. The old style was less cluttered too, imo. But it's not that big a deal.
Galaga shields were Nice. I'll miss my little ships :(
This version of the forum is uglier and much more difficult to navigate through and I, too, miss the Galaga shields.
The new version is too freakin' slow. Or maybe it just seems that way since nothing displays at all until the whole thing is done loading. NeoZeed's history threads, while once enjoyable, are now nightmares for my browser.
The old pages loaded like *snap* that. Now, I can get up, grab a quick snack, chew carefully, swallow, wash it down with a drink, give my chinchillas raisins, and take a piss before most full pages (20 posts) are finished loading.
I guess I could blame it on dial-up, but I'm not going to because the old version was nice and fast for me. I'm voting nay on the upgrade unless some kind of speed fix is implemented.
P.S. There needs to be a user-selectable default font size option. What's displayed now (thread titles and post bodies) would be fine at 1024x768 or higher, but I run on 800x600, so it looks huge and congested.
i would like it better if sigs were more isolated from the body of the post.
So, three carriage returns and a white, bold horizontal line aren't enough? Uh... :wtf:
horrible is a little strong, but i liked the old boards better. its liveable though, just not an improvement.
plus,i noticed total ignore is gone. and i liked that.
The new TNL looks pretty sloppy/cluttered/ugly and there are many bugs, so naturally I prefer the way it was. However, it's a work in progress so I am going to hold off judgement until it's complete. It's already a lot better than it was right after the switch was made.
Ideally the transition would have been more seemless.. but it's not. At least the boards are useable now, even if they look rather ugly. :)
I'll hack together some galaga shield action later tonight. I don't have the tools at hand to do it right now...
I get the impression that no one bothered testing before actually doing the upgrade. If I'm right, then a LOT of these problems would probably have been avoided by using a test system before commencing with the actual upgrade and having to do a shitload of bugfixes while the system is up and live.
That's just my opinion, though. :)
Looks AWESOME with Ice.
in my opinion, the galaga shields are the only thing missing. But, then, I haven't been here that long so I haven't been able to get used to the old one.
TNL 2.0 doesn't look much like the old TNL 2.0
Thats my only real complaint (well, that I haven't already voiced in the official bitch and moan thread.
Leave the shields off. It's not like you can trade them in for money or anything good, and it just encourages people who already have nothing to say to post more.
But... they're pretty.Quote:

i just want the themes to be fixed. 2.0 got fucked, so now im using Ice, and well, it looks like the xengen board. pretty annoying actually.
I'm using Ice theme myself. Its nice but I still would have preffered to have dark background of 2.0 in order.
As for shields, AFX do you think that their absence will somehow discourage people from posting? At least the very much more visually pleasing than the number stating your post count, that we got now.
It was rough at first but now that some of the glaring bugs have been stomped out it's better. I'm getting used to the lay out too. Loads faster for me as well.
Old version rocked.
how about we just have nothing? Why does anyone need to know how many times someone else has posted, other than things like "Jeremy has said this many pointless things." Really, what good does it do?Quote:

I'd like the boards text to look like it used to on version 2.9, currently the text is too big and the alignment is totally out of place. forum titles look really odd now. I don't like it.
AFX, we get it, you don't like my posts, now can you PLEASE move on from that?
I'm sure you wanted that to be a shot at you, but it wasn't, sorry, it was making a point about the uselessness of post counts. Don't worry, I'll make sure I get you sometime later, so that you can have your daily dose of attention. Now let the grownups talk.Quote:

Ok then, go on and explain to me what use post counts have except for the time or ten that me, omfg, or anyone else has used it against you in Fight Club. Go on.Quote:

I'm not arguing the lack of post counts being listed, I'm for that, I'm just wondering why you see fit to mention my name in a negative manner in seemingly every post you've made in this thread that has been about post counts.
It's staying above Fight Club level, and this is a place for discussion, so I'm going to have to say no. At least until Jeremy makes me see how I attacked him when I only pointed out that post counts are only good for bashing him.Quote:

take it to pm, fight club, or anywhere else but here. thank you. Jeremy, don't make your usual blah blah replies or I will just start deleting your posts added on here, one by one.
I'm done anyway. Anyone should know by now that it's not an attack on Jeremy unless everyone's laughing and JMET is making a topic on Neomega about it.Quote:

It's a little clunky but as long as I can navigate I'm perfectly fine with it. I would like that little double post hack installed, so they just join together.
Why isn't this in feedback yet?
i dont really notice much regarding the version change... i do notice that things have gotten terribly boring around here though.
AFX, you didn't respond to my key thing, which was WHY you said it in a negative form, which goes beyond mentioning me as an example of a post count. Bahn, I dig it.

Just my $.02...
/me doesn't like change.
My only real complaint is what 88mph mentioned about the TNL 2.0 theme.
But now I'm rediscovering the coolness of the GO! theme, so it's all good.
Too many lines (boxes everywhere!), many of which seem needless (ooh look, I can click on a post number to... open the post in another window? ooh look, post count is a separate box!). Users list moved to the bottom, extra forums listed at the top, meaning I have to scroll down just to see the topics (thats a major bad no no).
shrug
because more responses for such a thread will be available here. thus, an exception (much like the fight club request thread), it should remain.Quote:

Would you people like to see less lines on some of these themes? Go in particular? I can see how it would look nice without some of the lines, and I believe I'll be working on that in the test forum to see how it works.
What do you think?
I actually like all the lines in the GO! theme, as they help me put perspective on text and images on the board.
i think there are a few too many lines, and for some reason I can't preview threads anymore, which was the only improvement that I noticed and liked.
I've been running vBulletin 3 on versuscity for some time now, so I have had plenty of time to test things out. Again, I repeat that everyone is only running around fixing themes, which is more of a ui problem than a bug. Granted there are several bugs I'm personally aware of, but the only way bugs get found is if they're found in live products -- you cannot rely on the developers to solve ALL the problems. Besides, it won't be too long until Beta 5, then the Release Candidates come out after which bugs you see now will certainly be gone. The upgrade was for the best, even if it doesn't seem that way. The earlier the newer software is adopted the less negative effect it'll have on the site if it were to be upgraded later on (read: I'd have to re-do a bunch of scripts I wrote for the site to talk with the vBulletin database. And I'm a lazy, lazy man. :chick: )Quote:

I don't know if I'm the only one, or if I'm browsing after the "bugs" are fixed, but I've had no problems so far. I like having many more options, and I have no problems with the themes at all. Keep up the good work.
My only complain (and it's a minor one) is that I can't change the text size on my browser like I could previously to the upgrade (it's a tad on the small side). But I'm not sure if that's under your control or not.
yes. there should be some css code or whatever which allows that because i hate it too.
I think afxninjas and Jeremy make a cute couple.
We could always make a specific theme with larger text (and possibly larger buttons).Quote:

no, you misunderstand. we don't need LARGER text. we need smaller text. as it stands now, toggling the browser's text settings has no affect on how the boards are seen. which is why I said that css code may be the solution.
I like some of the additions, like the quick search box in threads and forums is nice :)
But I miss those little Galaga shields and there are still functions like /me and the [thumbnail] that don't work on the new board... they make old posts that use them all messed up :p
Not to mention the XBOX Live user tag is gone... I prefer the old board so far...
the shields are coming sir, be patient. cka hears your whin...err feedback. ;)
SMALLER text? Egads, there's a change I'm not looking forward to.
Oops! I guess I misunderstood. The font sizes actually look identical to me so I guess I assumed that since Jeremy was complaining about it they had gotten smaller, since he has vision problems.Quote:

Its good even if you have good vision. I myself have been known to sit back, put my feet up on the desk, set Opera to 150%, and do some far-off browsing. It's a truly great feature. It also helps when creating and editing webpages, so you can soom in and make sure everything is pixel perfect. :)
sggg, thanks for that info, you just sold me on getting Opera.
I dont know if anyone else experiencing this, but in last couple of days the loading of the forums, and moving between the boards have been quite slow. I tried it both at work and at home, and it the same results. I guess new softwares still needs some tweaking here and there.
It's kinda slow for me, too, but I'm attributing this to not having gzip compression enabled...
strange. we haven't heard about "slow loading" in ages it seems.
imo, we don't need gzip compression enabled. I dunno try it and see, but i know that it tends to be a slight strain on resources. personally it's been fine for me. maybe yall have sucky isps :chick:
The new look is ok, but I kinda wish we had our posting stats back up. I also think the options look somewhat lacking when you post.
It still doing it. I dont remember any of the older upgrades to be this slow.
There's something cka needs Nick around to check out on the server. Check the Feedback thread.
I like the old look better.
I don't mind the way it looks... although I miss the old black theme I had.
Just bring back the Gamertags under the posters name, and I'll be happy. I didn't care before, but now that I have Xbox Live I miss it.
Waiting on approval for a few major fixes. Gamertags aren't done, but they're on the list.
why do we need approval for gamertags. the objective should be to restore the original look (and improve it in other ways that wasn't quite possible before - such as the new icons). I don't see why you're waiting on a blessing before the forum continues to run on auxillary components.
Because it's not my forum? Nick's in charge, thus Nick gets to decide what we put live and what we do not. I've asked him for permission to go ahead and upload what we've done, but I haven't gotten a response yet.
I haven't had time to check out the Gamertag. It's one of those things that we can go ahead and put back on the boards, but it's going to require a new DB entry, some hacking, other stuff. If you want to find a vb3-compliant way to do it, feel free. Otherwise, be patient until someone who feels like hacking the board's source can get to it.
In other news, I've got Total Ignore working -- I think. Watch for it to reappear in a bit.
UPDATE: Total Ignore activated (except in ICE). Problems? Post them in Feedback.
Well, Speed issues definately got fixed :p Hooray. Now everything works nicely.
nice job on the new (as of 5 minutes ago,) tnl 2.1.
Thanks to sggg for the bulk of the work on 2.1 and cka for providing the reference material from the old board.
Check out the new GO! Lots of the images aren't done, but we think it's an improvement.
Watch the post icons and smilies, they'll be changing in short order.
comment on the new Go, bring back the grid lines on the main forum pages. It's hard to tell how they line up. I agree, great job on TNL 2.1, got me to switch back from GO.
TNL 2.1 looks like garbage. Way to go guys. Keep up the outstanding work.
To 88 only, not anyone else who might have a negative opinion of the new theme:
Your griping is excessive. There is no need to cross-post it everywhere. We know you don't like it. Go use Classic or something.
the new 2.1 is awesome. i really dig it. same goes for the new icons. good shit.
don't like that new TNL logo for 2.1 though.
Check out the bruhaha in Feedback. sggg's already considering redoing the logo, I think.
We don't need this here, it's a bit redundant and outdated. I'm de-anchoring it. Please go post your thoughts about the themes and whatnot in Feedback.
;)
This smilie is focking ugly. Please bring the old one back.
