Hacking mp3s into roms

I'm listening to the Gunstar Heroes soundtrack right now and it is truly gorgeous, the music is all arranged so it's as though the game was originally on the Saturn. Now, I was thinking wouldn't it be great to replace the standard music with these gorgeous arranged tunes? This is probably just wishful thinking but it doesn't hurt to ask (seeing as this is one of my favourite games ever). I know there would be no way to put these files directly into the rom as that would require an obscene amount of RAM (?) but maybe these sound files can be loaded on the fly? I really don't know much about this sort of thing but I feel really desperate right now.

I don't think its possible. Not by hacking into a rom anyways. I don't know about the genesis, but if the sound files are stored in an obvious format, unlike the SNES, perhaps someone could add a function to an emulator that allows for custom soundtracks, after you associate a particular mp3 with a particular game BGM. Actually having them called from the game seems impossible though, unless its reprogrammed to work with windows. I don't know.

I have a number of Mega Drive game soundtracks and they all come in .gym format, hence why I came up with this possibility.

Listening to the arranged Panzer Dragoon soundtrack now, that shouldn't be too hard to transfer to the original and then burn to CD-R.

The only way I see that happening without emulation tricks is if you manage to port the game to Sega CD and include code to grab the arranged music from the disc for BGMs.

Sega CD games don't necessarily have to use the add-on's own CPU, do they? If that's the case, I'm guessing porting the rom data would be pretty much cut/paste, with a few changes here and there.

I'm really talking out of my ass here, 'cause I don't know anything about game programming, so please, correct me if I'm wrong.

You'll have to convert the music into a tracking format and then convert it to genesis sound format(there are probably Dev apps that will do this). After that, you'll need to find a memory map for sound data in Genesis. This is probably described somewhere in the developer docs. Then replace the old data with your sound data. Simple, right?;)

It seems that no matter how many times we post on .gym, .sfc, .nsf, ect. formats people either don't listen or immediatly forget. :)

This is why all games need to have adjustable sound options. Then you can turn off the music, leave the sound effects on, and put your own CD into the stereo. :p
