As you all should know by now, VF4:EVO comes out on August 12th for a mere $20. I'd suggest you pick it up if you are even only mildly interested in fighters. It is a vast improvement over VF4 (better graphics, better 1p mode, 2 new characters, new moves, new arenas, new soundtrack, new extras, etc.), and could have been called VF5. Here you can talk about everything pertaining to EVO.
It got a 10, 9, 9.5 from EGM :)
Are there any changes from the import version?
Yes. The 10th anniversary thing is included with the US version.
This is one of my most anticipated games of the year, and probably second-most anticipated PS2 game. I can't wait to try out the new modes, especially the VF 10th anniversary one.

I'll definitely be picking it up. I sold off my VF4 for 10 bucks or so, since I assume EVO has everything in 4 and more. I definitely liked VF4, but, there's no one around here that plays it, and no arcade cabinets. Hopefully the 1-player stuff will be robust enough to keep me interested until I can convince some people into learning it.
-and I hope the graphics really are improved, because as nice as VF4 (PS2) was, it looked pretty ugly compared to DOA3 and Tekken 4...it's hard to not let that bias you a bit.

Does anyone know if this game can import any saved data from the original Virtua Fighter 4? I know that the new game is not out in the US yet, but maybe someone with Japanese or European versions of both games has tried this already.

FuryFox, Evo apparantly lacks the Kumite mode, but from what I've seen of it in screens, the game's visual appearance has been smoothed out a bit, which probably won't matter much to me, since I thought VF 4 looked fine.
You seriously thought VF4 ps2 looked ugly compared to Tekken 4? DOA 3 kills every fighting game graphically, so l understand DOA 3. Tekken 4 I don't understand though. I mean the characters are low poly, animation sucks, clothing/hair movement suck, the bg's are big but plain, and the face detail is severely lacking. Fury, the graphics are a bit nicer but the character models still have funny looking ARMS! Shoulders and elbows/lower bicep area to be exact. Why can't they fix this? And I'm using Pai so this flaw is just so in-my-face. But everything else looks superb, especially the faces. The quest mode is excellent and I got more into it than SC2's.. weapon master mode? And once you've played against an opponent with 1000+ wins.... you dance, baby, DANCE! :D
What??? Kumite's out? Characters are changed? I thought they'd just add some more moves. I can't belive they took Kumite out...oh well, I can get VF4 if I miss it...still have the save and all that.
Mostly my problem with the graphics of VF4 were the jaggies (I have a huge tv) and the funny joints. Like was said, Pai is is notorious for that flaw. I think while the textures look nicer in VF4, their characters aren't really that higher of polygon...they're just textured better (especially in the face). Namco tried to do some new stuff with hair animation and stuff...not always successful, but at least they tried. I might just like Tekken's art design better too, and the way the arenas are built of interaction (instead of VF4's float-float square wall juggles). Also, I don't think the animation is any better or worse than Tekken's...they both have great, new animations, and they both cling to a bunch of crappy, out-dated animation. Except for Vanessa...she was new and she had crappy animation. Also, the way juggling typically works in VF4 is just plain ugly, in my opinion. Even the coolest combo vids are full of attacks hitting outside of their expected property box, and attacks on characters just above the ground, or ugly jab-jab-floaty stuff. Tekken has some of this too, but not as bad IMO.
So, if Kumite's out, what is VF4 quest mode like? I know you can win items to put on your character and all that sort of stuff. It's a damn shame some sort of online Kumite mode wasn't implemented...that and SC2's Conquer mode would both make great online features. Oh well.
There is a Quest Mode now, which is supposedly a lot better than Kumite :)
You go around Japanese arcades playing against the AI of actual Japanese VF champions. And you win money and prizes (new hairdos, masks, etc.). Someone with the import can explain better...
Well, it wouldn't take much to be better than Kumite mode, since that just about the most assinine advancement and arbitrary item unlocking ever. Still fun, but flawed. Playing the AI of japanese pros sounds fun though.Quote:

Weird, I thought the hit detection was one of VF4's strong points technically. The only time it's kinda weird is when jeffery splash mountains someone with their legs going through the arms a bit. "AI" of Japanese players was in VF4 as well. They were the High Kings that you faced in Kumite. They're also in this game too, so they're pretty similar.
Quest Mode is infinitely better than Kumite to me. In Kumite you were just fighting, fighting, fighting. You never really had to apply any of the knowledge you had of the game in Kumite because you could exploit the AI for free damage. In Quest Mode you *have* to understand how to do things. Every arcade in Quest mode has Quest orders where you have to perform certain tasks in order to earn more money and whatnot. For the first three tournaments all you have to do is win a certain number of games to enter the tournaments that allow you to advance to the next stage. Once you get to the fourth arcade, you actually have to complete these Quest orders to advance, and they're pretty tough for the average player. Stuff like "Win 5 games in a row" or "Win 2 rounds against a 4th Dan Wolf player" are basic Quest orders at the beginning of the game. Then you get to orders such as "Throw your opponent from a guaranteed throw situation 5 times" and "Evade an enemy's attack using evade throw escape guard 4 times". It gets really tough, but it makes you infinitely better at the game because you're forced to learn it.
While SC2 has Weapon Master Mode that gives you situations that you'll never ever face in a real match against someone else, Quest Mode in VF4e is really something that can make you a better player. For that reason alone it's far better than WMM could ever hope to be. Plus, VF4e has the Rock Bottom. It can't possibly be bad.
It's mostly during the juggles where messed-up hit detection comes in. Especially with characters like Akira and Sarah.Quote:

So, no more low-jab->throw to win all? It sounds like the quest mode seriously does make you better, just like how the training in VF4 tended to make you better as well. Sounds good. ...I still like the silly fun of the different weapons though, although I wish SC2 had a more in-depth mode as well.Quote:

You can still d+P -> Throw if you want to, you just won't be successful with it every single time like in VF4.
And Wolf's Rock Bottom is waaaaaaay better. :) Plus he has a new animation for the Jackhammer, a Tiger Driver and a lovely kick to the nuts. :p
I have my pre-ordered and even got an extra $5 trade in credit for a game since I said it was for Madden, but I'll just switch it to VF4 when it comes out. It's all paid for already, jus thave to show up and pick it up :-D
Wolf is crazy now! The jack hammer, the stone cold stunner complete with the kick to the balls, and the rock bottom. Plus his elbow on an opponent on the ground has a people's elbow type animation now. He just needs the diamond cutter Lion has for some reason now. :D
I'm loving how this Quest mode sounds, it cuts right to the chase by having you fight the "AI" of the Japanese experts, and seems to give you an actual reason to do it, nifty. I can't wait to try out Wolf in Evo, with all those moves....
If you want to see how VF4 Evo should play should come down to Southern Califorina...Cal Poly Pomona to be exact on August 8th thru the 9th. They are holding the holy grail of fighting tournaments called EVO2003. One of these games include VF4 EVO... The best thing about it is that you will see the best U.S. players, Canadian, European, China,and Japan playing against each other. For a true VF4 fan it is more than worth the trip just to see the Japanese players play. One of these guys is Chibita... He is one of the best in VF4 EVo, but in the VF community he is a god. Anyways I am also part of the socal/l.a./san diego/ group we have gatherings whenever we can. If anyone is in socal and would like to have some human competition let us know we can always schedule something.
For all you beginners go to www.virtuafighter.com save it in your Favorites folder and if anyone wants to mee the Socal group just visit the Jamboree section of the message boards(VERSUS CITY).

Chibita is the best in casual arcade play but his tournament form isn't so hot sadly. A month ago he beat Tsuchikumo (best Pai player ever) 4 times in a row thus making him go down a rank! He's an amazing player and really good fun in person also. Anyway he's the one who inspired me to go back to using Lion but I still keep my Goh in reserve.
Chibita's tournament form is good, the thing is that the tournament format in Japan is very different than in North America. Over here we emphasize the fact that a lot of our tournaments are something like "Best out of 3 matches, double elimination". This gives players enough time to warm up and teach their opponents habits to exploit them later on. Over in Japan, every tournament is single match, single elimination. You lose one match, you're gone. The pressure to perform at your top level at all times is very high compared to North America, which (IMO) is the reason why they're so much better than us in fighters.
Oh, and Brisal, I'm the only Canadian going to Evolution 2003 for VF4e.... I don't think I can be called Canada's best though. :p
I should trade in my copy of VF4 when I get this, even if I only get like five bucks credit. :/

For the record, I sold mine for $10 bucks on Half.com...but it might be best to keep it if Evo is as different as people say.
It doesn't reflect his rank nor his ability, which is my point. He rarely gets beyond the quarters. I've attended a tournament and seen him in person lose two rounds, then totally destroy the guy in the next two and then fall apart in the fifth. Fact is guys like Minami Akira and Heruru have far better tournament form.Quote:

Spot on, it's horrendous. Only being able to load from the first memory card slot and only upon boot up really reeks. Bringing your character round for challenges away from home would have been brilliant.

I like what Reno said about the Quest mode forcing you to be a better fighter. If there's one fighting game that is hard for me to get a handle on, it's this one.

Picked this up today and am having a blast with newcomer Goh. I like his cheeseball Judo in your face playstyle. I haven't messed with Brad yet but I'll get to him in a bit. Graphics look cleaner, the music is the same nonsense, and Quest mode is pretty neat so far. I like the changes to most of the stages. Akira's dojo and the great wall of China are cool again.
My only gripes. As mentioned, Vanessa's 1p has been removed and replaced with a palette swap of her 2p costume. Seeing as how there already is a color edit mode, it's just lame and I don't see how Sega found it inappropiate for westerners either(At least Dural's bouncy nudeness is still there). Also, theres some slight chugging and hickups during the stage intros(Specifically Aoi and Jeffry) but the loading has been much improved so who gives a shit.
I believe that the 'chugging and hickups' during the stage flybys is actually the loading itself. If you try pressing start right at the beginning of those flybys, you'll never be able to skip them, so that should be a telltale sign that it's a loading sequence.
I think I read that you could use the VF4 music for the game. Is it an unlockable? I really liked the original music, but the EVO stuff is almost totally forgettable. Graphics are super clean, and that 10th anniversary mode is cooler than I thought it'd be.
um...last time I played VF4, Vanessa was the last character I'd think 'fanservice' of. So if she lost her 1P costume, I wouldn't worry. Besides...you're playing it for the new features, tight gameplay, and in-depth fighting, right?

I've only played a couple of games so far, but I agree. I liked the original VF4 music better. The music in VF4 Evolution is totally new (not remixes of the old music, but completely new compositions), but it leans heavily towards hard guitar rock and not much of it stands out (maybe it will with more playtime). The original VF4 tunes seemed more varied and distinctive.Quote:

This is weird. I'm playing as Jacky in quest mode, and around 7th Kyu my outfit colors change to yellow. Now I'm 1st Dan and they changed to blue all of a sudden. WTF?

That sucks that she doesn't have her 1p costume. Oh well, maybe someone famous dresses like that and Sega doesn't want to get sued for BS like they have in the past. Some chick sued them for the space channel 5 crap. The Nike thing was pretty BS too. That's the only reason I can think of.

Chojin: Quest mode is waaaay harder than Kumite mode from what I've experienced. Believe me, once you get to 9th or 10th Dan and beyond, most people will just start crying on how difficult it is. With VF4 in Kumite I was riding a 95% - 98% for the entire time, only dropping to 90% right at the very end. In Quest I just got past 10th Dan and I'm already at 89% :(
Anyone checked out the saved tournament replays?
I prefer Pai's old Aquarium.
What a great, great game. I think Quest mode is a very good change - I also think it seems tougher than Kumite, but the way it coaxes you into improving is a lot better. I like the variation too.

I'm really enjoying 10th Anniversary. Although the models aren't quite Model 1 quality in terms of polygon count, they're better than the Saturn models, the floors have filtering and anti-aliasing and the whole thing runs at 60fps.

lucas, seeing as this is the first vf you're taking seriously, make sure you check out the training modes. they're put together incredibly well. the character-specific tutorials, in particular.
yeah, been messing around with the Training Mode a bit, and for the most part it really makes the game seem like it needs a stick to be able to pull off most of the stuff with ease. could very well be that i don't have the game down for shit yet though.
just finished my second tournemant in the game, and so far im having a lot of fun with it.
another thing though, in the shop, do you have to buy shit in order? cause i noticed there's 3 items for your head, and the first 2 are 1000, yet, i can only buy the second one. i can't make out what the other one is, but i desperatley need to get that motorcycle helmet that i saw in footage of the game a while back.
and like i said, i decided to go with Jacky as my first character, any other recommendations? cause im thinking once i get a good feel for him, and get better, i'll move onto that monk. Vanessa seems really cool too.
I just received the game earlier today. It's excellent I must say. Quest mode is a blast, and all of the little extras like wallpapers and stuff are cool. Great fighter, especially if you actually have competition. Its still good by yourself though thanks to Quest mode.

I still have yet to try to really master anyone except Jacky. After him I think I'll try Brad, he seems really good, though the constant ducking and weaving could get annoying to do. If this game were released full price, I wouldn't have regretted getting it. Easily a 9 or higher.
