I'm actually getting all the stage 1 and 2 vulcanoes, and also getting crazy with stage 3 and 4...
i need badly to improve my volcano-leeching skills, i talke about this with Mode7. My theory is that he knows all the volcanoes, as he has written them on his site, but a "scientific" metod to completely exploit them should be the key to the highest scores. Oh well:

Mode7, I've been thinking about writing a strategy guide.
I'm wondering if I can use screen captures from your video
to help myself and others visualize my strategies. Of
course, I will give you credit for your work.
If not, I can just point out the times so that people can
refer to a particular scene in your video.
Go right ahead, Bern. I might be able to hook you up with a higher quality version next time I bump into you on #shmups, if need be.
6,668,668,158,219,030 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 5
Dismal effort yesterday, great performance today. I've
finally managed not to die or use a bomb on the first three
stages, so I'm happy about that. I just need to learn when
to use the RF beyond this. I'm aiming for over 10.7*10^15
points now.
Oh, and Randorama, please update your score on SGL
sometime. :)
9,899,303,006,399,080 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 6
Two more credits later, and this suddenly happens. Amazing.
Mode7, from what I've read from your Giga Wing 2 Replay
Tally, some of your item volcanon misses for Stage 4 seem
incorrect. First, are the situations below those in which
you failed to trigger the volcanon? I noted the times when
you started to use the RF which lead to these misses.
Time 10:30: http://www.shmups.com/beepreying/gw2/18903.jpg
Time 13:24: http://www.shmups.com/beepreying/gw2/24107.jpg
If these are the ones, could you tell me what you did wrong
and how you would usually trigger those volcanons?
The first miss was not listed as 10:30, but rather 10:57. You are right in that it was incorrect, however, as watching the video again it seems I did trigger the volcano. The actual miss occurs at around 11:13 with the dual carriers -- quite difficult to do consistently.
For the second miss, I triggered a bit too early and approached the reflect at an inopportune angle. It would have been better to approach it from lower down the screen. Try and concentrate the reflect toward the core of the boss, and not the wings as demonstrated in the video.
MIA from MIA's Game Laboratory has a different approach,Quote:
Originally posted by Mode7 The actual miss occurs at around 11:13 with the dual carriers -- quite difficult to do consistently.
and I wonder if it works better. According to him, he would
destroy swiftly the right carrier with the shot, and then
use only the RF on the left carrier's bullets in order to
trigger the volcano.
By destroying the right carrier while the RF's activated
(as shown in your video), many bullets disappear, so there
are fewer bullets to reflect. This method might work better
because the right carrier's already destroyed before the
left one attacks. I think I can move close to the left
carrier while the RF's in use, and reflect more bullets
that way. I'll try this soon to see if it works out how I
think it should.
Mode, have you tried this already and why do you choose to
use the strategy demonstrated in your movie instead?
I had not tried it. My approach depends heavily on not having one explode to earlier and dropping the bullet count, which is obviously inconsistent.
Give it a shot, let me know.

10,039,339,831,443,890 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 6
I never realized how little my score improved. Ah well...
The fourth boss always manages to waste my first life
today. Either I confuse what attack he will fire next or I
activate my RF too late. I still can't manage the middle of
Stage 4 yet, either. I need more practice...
For the second set of carriers, I tried using what I
figured to be MIA's method, and I ended up with very few
medals. Maybe I'm misinterpreting him. Mode, I think I'll
stick to your method for now, because I know of no other
profitable method.
12,274,139,705,719,700 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 7
As much as I can remember, I had 10.07*10^15 points coming
into Stage 6. When I allowed the Stage 6 boss to
self-destruct, I was rewarded with 109 seconds worth of the
boss destruction bonus anyway. I have no clue of what's
going on here--could it be a bug?
I've reported the score that I had, but I have trouble
accepting it. What do you think, Mode?
I was never certain how the boss destruct bonuses worked. And even if it was a bug, the bonus is somewhat negligible in the grand scheme of things. Up it goes.
14,034,162,137,762,060 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 7
Second and final credit for today.
The bug happened again. This time, I received 69 seconds
worth of the TOTAL BOSS TIME bonus when I let the Stage 6
boss self-destruct. At least it's a consistent bug or
whatever it is.
Much thanks to VTF-INO's 0-point videos for helping me
manage the second form of this boss. I'll be ready to
destroy it myself in a few weeks.
By that point you'll be sacrificing quite a few points by letting the boss time out. Take the first form out correctly and you should have ample time.
I figured it out.Quote:

For each stage clearance, the TOTAL BOSS TIME bonus is
calculated by multiplying all these factors:
2,000 *
Stage number *
Sum of the times for all the bosses you destroyed so far *
Your current score multiplier
For example, let's calculate Mode's TOTAL BOSS TIME bonus
for Stage 6.
2000 *
6 *
(1+26+18+16+5+7) *
724,872,913 =
634,988,671,788,000
which is exactly what he received. Do the calculations for
the rest of the stages in his replay and they should match
what the game displays.
I can accept what I've earned now. Yeay!
EDIT: Whoops, the description is more compactly explained
on Darren Lo's FAQ on GameFAQs. But I think it was good to
give an example just to clear things up.

play the boss as Mode demonstrated in his replay, and then
the RF would recharge in time to protect me from the
situation shown in the first image. Anyone, is there an
easier way to deal with this?
EDIT: Potential solution. Step back a half a second from
the first picture. The rear of the little ship should be
aligned with the bottom of the big ship's landing area. I'm
thinking about using my RF there.

Back to Chery and a decent play, considering that i only tried twice after two weeks or Ikaruga and illness.
Bern, for your problems regarding boss 4: you can do in any way you like the bomb thingies, but you have to trigger earlier the reflect force before the green laser. Try to find your own timing, tho, consider that you also get the wide+lasers part after that.
R
16,332,987,866,697,070 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 7
I've never managed to waste the bosses from Stages 4 and 6
without using a bomb or losing a life. I'm considering
recreating their patterns using BulletML and playing them
on sdmkun. On this credit, I also performed a few succesful
RFs on the Stage 7 boss. Just need to know how to dodge
better after every RF.
And Randorama, congratulations on breaking the 20
quadrillion point barrier! Looks like I still have to keep
chasing after ya. :)
5,186,321,582,052,060 - Bern-D / Ralugo / RF ALL
I felt ALL coming. But every time I tried, I'd always make
some foolish mistake. A stray bullet in Stage 4. A lazy
misjudgement of some pattern in Stage 6. Whatever.
I used Ralugo twice today, because I felt ALL coming. I
knew his splash mines were best for wiping out bosses the
quickest, but would I get used to his slower speed? Maybe
not the first time, but it all came together on the
second--my tenth credit for the day.
I made it to Stage 7 with no deaths and one bomb. I used
that bomb on the first form of the demented LIMI. But
somehow, I managed to dodge and reflect through the rest
effectively. Second form, and my only death came from
misjudging the flower pattern. I forgot--Ralugo's hit area
is below Chery's. And even after, I paniced and wasted two
more bombs on the boss. Even the red spiral attack nearly
killed me.
Then I destroyed her. Some casual arcade visitor named SEK
witnessed her fall. But with one life remaining and no
bombs, I was pleased. Surprised, but pleased.
This is the first arcade shooting game I cleared on a
credit.

tempted, though, to start playing Gunbird 2 for first-loop

Mode, now you may update the chart with this:
19,471,496,858,274,000 - Bern-D / Chery / RF ALL
I think failing to destroy the sixth boss in time hurt my
score plenty. On the first form, I can perform the first
two reflects okay, but the rest I'm unable to aim properly.
Because of that, I died and I wasted time handling the rest
of the first form. Any tips on how to nick off this form
quicker?
(EDIT: Never mind. I think I have it now.)
Also, this attack still scares me:
http://www.shmups.com/beepreying/gw2/31379.jpg
Hard to see, so I'll explain. All bullets are red needles.
There is a somewhat aimed sequential shot and every second
or so, the boss fires off two arcs on eiter side of the
sequential shot. What should I do here?
I should also be braver handling the seventh boss. Once I
bomb, my timing's messed up. Maybe I should create a
BulletML simulation of LIMI's first attack so I can manage
the rest with more confidence.
One more thing. I play on two-player side. On this attack
http://www.shmups.com/beepreying/gw2/stage7/3191.jpg
I lose the visual cue from the one-player side's RF
display. For the moment, I stick a piece of paper marking
the safe spot. Is there another safe spot that's easy to
enter? Doesn't matter where, as I'll reflect the second
flower pattern anyway.
21,404,490,925,917,410 - Bern-D / Chery / RF ALL
How many minutes of glory I'll get for bapping Rando for
once, we shall see...
I managed to destroy the sixth boss in time, but I still
died when the boss transitioned into the blue needle
spirals. Will that pattern always begin in the same way?
I also triggered an item volcanon with the four turrets at
the end of the factory stage. I would begin reflecting
after the bullet arcs intersected one another. Then I would
wait at the center a bit and move toward upper-right corner
such that the barrier expands on the two turrets there. How
consistently I can trigger this, I've yet to see.
Your best bet is to try and find a hole relative to the 2P gauge, but I know of none from experience -- perhaps consult the replay with virtualdub to help suss out potential holes.
The large blue needle pattern is static, but will sometimes "fake" an entry, tricking you into depleting your RF early. The only thing you can really do is make a point of not rushing into the reflection. Give it a couple extra seconds to make sure it isn't just playing with you. It is entirely possible to dodge, so keep a cool head in case it does come to that.
Factory stage turret section is also static. If you've triggered a volcano once, odds are good you can do it again.

Failed to destroy the 6th boss in time.

Now that I'm running out of item volcanons to trigger, I
have to find ways to maximize my profit from them. I feel
uncomfortable again.
23,125,409,620,283,480 - Bern-D / Chery / RF Stage 7
Ran into a stray bullet in Stage 4. Cost me an ALL
clearance. But now that I discovered how to collect
more medals for suitable item volcanons, I hope to
make more progress in future plays.
Move up, move down, move right or left, repeat. Not
sure if this is the optimal solution for collecting
the maximum number of medals, but it helped me boost
my score a bit.
Mode, is it more profitable to use a bomb in order to
grab hard-to-reach medals from certain volcanons?
I've never played with any bomb use in mind, so I can't say one way or the other. Seems like the idea might be worth pursuing, however.

A Stage 1 capture report for Chery (RF) players. Check out
points 6 and 7.
Point 6 describes two item volcanons. The first is as seen
in Mode7's video.
http://www.shmups.com/beepreying/gw2/01712.jpg
But for the next one, instead of letting the battleship on
the right drift off, the guide recommends that one should
immediately destroy it and trigger the volcanon there.
Point 7 describes two more volcanons from the four large
machines which follows. The first comes from only the
first machine. Reflect bullets from either side of it,
then rush into it at the end of the reflection. The second
comes from the second and third machines. When the third
one arrives, reflect the second machine's bullets, and then
run into the third to trigger that volcanon.
The guide also points out that the fourth machine could
help you trigger another volcanon. But since you have to
use your shot too much for some reason, it's highly
unlikely that one can trigger it.
Did anyone trigger all four of these volcanons in one run?
I'll try it on Monday, but I would like to know if this
works.
I do everytime. Gets me a 1.4 quad score for the level.
Ah, thanks for the confirmation, Kaneda. Guess I'll have toQuote:

find the timing by myself, though.
What I find most helpful when dealing with those 4 large ships is not firing at all and letting them unload as much as they can. If you slowly approach, reflecting the lighter stream of bullets, then just as your RB gives it's last expulsion of energy rush into the most congested sections of bullets and push towards the large ship that's shooting them, you can trigger both volacanons easily. It's real hard to explain, but if you have trouble I might be able to take shots with my webcam, although I can't guarantee real clear pics.
That makes sense. But when exactly do you start the RB?Quote:

Stay at the bottom of the screen. When the bullets meet you, your RB will have just recharged from the last volcanon so you can use it in time.

Btw:
i read somewhere there's some trick to trigger all the gw1 ships: any infos on it?
To unlock the GW1 ships, you can either a) beat the game WITHOUT RESTARTING OR CONTINUING with any character, which will unlock the GW1 ship for that character, or b) enter this code quickly on the first page of the Gallery:
Up, X, Y, X, Down, Y, X, Y, Y.
Check Darren Lo's FAQ on GameFAQs if that doesn't work. I'm repeating this from memory.
One word of warning: the code above will unlock everything, so if you wish to retain the pleasure of unlocking things yourself, make sure to turn off autosave or remove your VMU.

Yeay! I can focus on my score target again.
I couldn't pull off any of the new tricks I described in my
latest diary entry today. In Stage 1, I might be reflecting
the left airship's bullets way too early, since I'm still
following Mode's timing. I guess I have to "chain" the next
three reflects after in order to trigger all four volcanoes.
I need more volcanoes. Too bad MIA skipped Stage 3 in his
capture report. :/

Oh no, so close to 35.3 quadrillion. Maybe I should've
avoided that stray bullet early into the fourth boss
battle...
I figured out an approximate starting point for Stage 1's
two airships scene. Let the left airship's front turret
fire six volleys of red needle bullets. Then reflect. It
should still be alive, but you will get the item volcano
(IV). Slowly make your way to the lower-left corner and
once the RF recharges, reflect immediately towards the
right airship. There's your second IV.
Use Kaneda's method on the first and third large machines
which follows to trigger the next two IVs.
I forgot to mention yesterday... In reference to the static
flower pattern for the second form of the seventh boss:
I get varied results from tapping on the joystick. What IQuote:

do instead is that while I'm reflecting the cone pattern, I
fire a few test shots at the numbers of TIME counter. If
the vulcan's fire is aligned precisely with those two
numbers, then move straight down and the pattern glides
through you.
You could do this similarly when LIMI's in critical
condition and is firing the pattern from a different
location. I forgot what numbers to use to help with the
alignment, but since I play on the 2-player side, I still
have to figure this out using the 1P and INSERT COIN texts.

I'm in quite a luck-based mode with the game right now. Performance is fairly random, because I have no idea what I'm doing from the stage 4 boss onward, and survival is not assured even before that. Soo, a new high should be forthcoming fairly soon, when the planets happen to align "ever so nicely".

Hey fellas. I am new to the forum, butI am glad I found it. Only wish I found it way earlier. I used to actually think my scores were good, but now I am not so sure looking at you guys. I mostly play Score Attack, so that is what I am gonna talk about for this post. Anyway... here is my top level 1 score. That is the level I have worked on the most, and I feel like I have made some real progress.
772,387,666,057,230,060 - RL - Kart/Kingfisher
I have a couple questions for you pros, if you don't mind. For the sake of easiness, I will only refer to the first 2 numbers of my score when making comparisons and such. So, from here out, my score is 77.
1) Why do you guys always use RF? How do you guys use RF? Can I please get some kinda tips, or pointers. I have tried many times, and I always end up scoring around 25 or 26... 50 short of my record, so it isn't very pleasing when this happens. When I do use RF, the main difference I find is that the Volcanons are much smaller, but easier to trigger. I suppose that getting small ones is better, because you are able to collect a higher percentage of the total number.
2) When all your scores say Chery, it makes me think that she is better than I thought... am I missing something? I don't really know why I use kart/Kingfisher, but I always seem to get the highest scores with him. Are you guys using the Carmine Plus or the Stork? Which ship would you consider the overall hardest for scoring?
3) What is the best method for collecting Volcanons? I always let most of them go, not intentionally though.
4) Do any of you players ever encode videos of yourselves playing? I would love to see someone really whoopup on some levels. If I were to encode some of ME playing, would anyone be willing to watch the videos and give me some pointers? I really just don't see how a score of 263 (by sleeveboy) would even be possible on level1. I never died until the VERY end of the stage, and only squeezed out 77. It was thrilling to do so though :)
Thanks for any help you guys can provide :)
I've answered 1) and 2) on the post you've made in the newQuote:

Shmups board, though I will say I've used Chery. I play in
the arcade and I've found nothing on how to unlock the
original Giga Wing planes, so I stick to the given planes.
And besides, my timing's oriented to using Chery properly;
I don't know how to score well with any other plane.
For 3), during the volcano animation, I would stand still
so that I could collect as many of the fast-moving medals
as I can. When the animation's over, I would sway from side
to side to grab the rest. This may not be optimal, but it's
the best I can think of.
Wow I am an idiot. I spent the majority of last night playing with RF, and I don't know how I was using RL before. I can now get Volcanons almost every time I try... and I am constantly inventing new ones. My NEW top score for level 1....

Well it appears as though this thread is dead. Too bad I wasn't here in it's hay day. None the less, I will keep posting in the hopes that someone will read it :), and to keep it alive. Well, today I achieved a new level 1 score, plus some other scores. Most of these aren't as high as I would like, but I am working on it. For arcade mode I followed the threads guidelines, although I am no where near Bern and Kaneda... don't know how they get all the way through, I will keep working.

Hm I couldn't fin this thread on the highscore board, only when I did a search, so does it still get updated?
I thought I was doing pretty good but it looks like I would rank 11th. Still, I managed to get to stage 6, I guess I'll have to improve my volcanos
Not sure -- try submitting a score and see what happens.Quote:

Edit- New highscore:
J2d 7,690,494,293,891,871/ Chery/ RF/ Stage 7
Hopefully this bump will get others to think of picking it up again..
Up you go..
Be sure to submit new replies instead of editing previous posts when you have a new high -- I'm likely to miss them otherwise.
Yea I thought that a thread was bumped when you edited it, sorry about that.
This game is absolutely stunning now that I have a VGA box. Bullet dodging just became a lot more managable. I've still got a long way to go before I can compete with you guys, though (my best is a mere 16 trillion :))
I'll definitely keep practicing. GW2 rocks.

Oh thank heavens. I did a search for this thread the other day and I couldn't find it.
This thread must never die!
Got this one with the Reflect Laser. Stage 4 seems to be designed for it, I guess in return for the rest of the game.

Squeezing as much as I can out of it...
:_) Man, I loved this game. Whatever happened to Mode7? That guy was an absolute animal when it came to shooters. Cool guy, too.
He played Xbox PSO with us a few times, then like people said, was absorbed into WoW. I'm almost afraid to see what kind of stuff he does in that game.
WHOA. IT'S GONDOLIN. n_________________________n
I remember you as well as i remember Gigawing 2! The details are gon, but the experience is still there! Remember that huge argument we got into about that abstraction vs. realism in art waaaaaaaaaaaay back on MoMa?
