Then each year A-Kon's popularity began growing more...and more...and more. We got flooded by Otakus, hell, my cousin even became one! :confused: They were everywhere you turned, you couldn't escape them. What was once a small minority in the early days had become a large subdivision of people at the shows. Sure there were still people there like me who just go there to buy anime and anime-related stuff and watch the shows, but we were just also a ridiculous number of fanboys and fangirls which crashed the proverbial party.
I feel bad for girls at A-Kon, a lot of them seem to get hassled a good deal even by supposedly-shy and withdrawn anime fans like us. Asian girls seem to have to deal with the most crap, while, ironically, Asian guys like me are all but ignored, more than anyone else at the show. I guess it's the "Get out of here, we want ur women!" attitude or something :lol: Although in this case the anonymity and general invisibleness is indeed a blessing :)

That's one of the great things about having been one of these people before - I now know every little button to push to totally piss them off.
However, I indeed cannot toss stones at those who chase after girls of the Japanese persuation, because I am 150% guilty of doing that very thing. However, I like them - well, all Asian girls in general - because they are some hot little cuties, not because they come from the same country as DragonBall Z and Pocky.
I'm experiencing almost the total opposite of what many posters are mentioning. Anime, and any talk of Anime is almost totally absent here. I only know of personally very few people that even know what Anime is, and even fewer still that know of anything beyond the mainstream stuff as Pokemon and DBZ. Most of everyone else that do know of some of the Anime series don't know of any difference between Anime, and your run of the mill American cartoon. I'm not really sure why it's so different here, but it's possible that 1) This area has a large Black populaton. I don't know any other Black guys that care about Anime. 2) The location; I never hear of any Anime related events that happen in the Southeast, with the possible exception of Atlanta, and 3)The culture; most circles I know of consider cartoons, and anything related to be "kiddy", any Anime fans probably just aren't saying anything for fear of being ridiculed.
Even with all that, after reading some of the stuff in this thread, maybe it's a good thing....although with some people in my area, replacing "Anime" with "Latest E.A. Sports Game" will garner some of the same results.
actually dirty, i was exactly where you were in the late 90'sin high school, there were exactly 3 people in my entire high school who knew what the hell anime was, and one was just becasue he liked hentai. even now, i only know personally about 4 people who seriously have watched anime outside of dbz and hentai. But there are people who go too far with everything, a good analogy is in "user friendly" where i guy decked out in full miami dolphins gear, a football helmet, pennent, et cetera saying that computer geeks are a bunch of freaks.
