Peer Pressure

In my never ending quest to come up with fresh topics (something we could use a little of around here) it occurred to me on the way back from Gamestop that perhaps this is a new one.

Name a game that you never intended to buy but ended up buying because everyone else liked it so damn much.

My case in point: I would've sworn up and down on firstborns, lastborns, and bibles that I would *NEVER* buy a Star Wars game again. You can take me to task for that if you want, but LucasArts and all of their shenaningans and crap software just left me with a bad taste in my mouth for many years.

So, now everyone and their mother is saying that SW KotOR is all that and I find myself on a mission to go to Gamestop, of all places, to buy this fucking thing at retail because of all of YOU.

Peer pressure. Name your cave-in.

Splinter Cell.. and I still regret it. I keep it on my shelf as a constant reminder to always remain untrustworthy and paranoid. :p

Won't be long before someone mentions a Treasure game...

As for me I'd have to say GTA3 and Phantom Crash. Phantom Crash obviously being limited to praise on this board, which was the only place I ever saw it talked about.

[edit] And Star Wars Galaxies, which I was pressured into by some friends of mine. Damn them all.

Gunvalkyrie - this wasn't so much because of you guys, but mainly because i didn't like that my xbox was collecting so much dust, and decided to put some faith in Smilebit. ended up liking it a lot more compared to when i had played the demo. controller S helped a lot too.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Rez

Part of the reason I bought a Game Cube was due to peer pressure.
Do I regret it? I don't know, I'm indifferent about it either way.

Shenmue. I think it's a total turd.

I did play it at first, and my instincts did tell me that I really wouldn't like boring, slow paced shooters.

But no, the magazines and websites wouldn't shut up (not to mention insisting that every true shooter fan has it in their library), so I caved in and got it used.

Well, the end of the story isn't too bad since I'm sure (former poster) Richter appreciates his copy and I appreciate his working Intellivision :)

For me as well. I bought a damn N64 just to buy this game :)

Zelda 64: Something about this one - I dunno- felt off. It's really hard to explain but I didn't enjoy this game as much as the other Zelda's, and goddamn did I ever try to.

Final Fantasy (anything): I hate every single one of them. And I've tried ever single one of them. At some point in the game I'd realize that I hated random battles, I hated the battle systems, and I hated the stories. Yet, every time a new one comes out I try it, buying into the "retooled" battle-system and new and "sophisiticated" plot hype.
I'm so stupid. *sigh*

Return to CastleWolfenstein: This game spanks donkey ass if you have Xbox Live. If you don't it's a mediocre shooter, or so I felt.

Wario Ware - Single most disappointing game I've EVER purchased because elite posters X and Y said it was great. To this day I make references to the sheep who bought this game. I really detest it.

morrowind: this forum convinced me to go for it, i thank whoever it was profusely, it brought me back into gaming. Ikuraga too to a degree,though i really bought that for my brother more than myself. It was another good buy,despite my general dislike of shooters.

Sorry to say it, but Virtua Fighter 4. And I imported it...

As a side note, I believe there is a name for this in Japan. Aura Purchase, or something to that effect.

You buy it because everyone else does/thinks it's good.

I can't say that I've ever been massively let down though. Most of the time, the people who I ask about games have the same tastes as me and come through.

I have the big shocker for this one. Castlevania: SOTN. I decided to track down a copy after all the praise here, and it simply didn't click with me. I couldn't get into it, I'm not sure why. I guess the gameplay didn't appeal to me at all, it felt like the same thing and what I played didn't dazzle me. I never got too far in previous CV games, and this one was no different. I liked the music I heard though...that's about it.

Two (well technically three) comes to mind:

Hoshigami: I've seen it praised as the second coming of FFT. Thankfully my brother spent his money on this and not me, but it still was a huge dissapoinment.

Mortal Kombat 3 & Trilogy: I bought both of this because I felt my collection was incomplete without any MK game. In retrospect, I could've used the money I've spent for both on a game that was actually good. What a mistake that was.

Same here, but HoD fucking OWNED me.

For me, omfgninjas talking about Knights before it came out made me buy it on release day, even though I was only vaguely aware that it existed prior to him mentioning it.

I've gotten better, but I've always been really bad about buying Gran Tourismo 3.

Borrowed it actually. I hated it. gave it back promptly.

Jet Set Radio (DC) US$10
Bought it. Hated it so violently I smashed it with a hammer.

Guess that is about all. I stopped listening to friends online or off about what game to get after JSR. (And yes, i am aware I am one of perhaps two people in the known universe that didn't love JSR.) I have tried over the years to simply avoid getting games I probably won't like, or getting a friend who keeps preaching about how great a game is to just loan it to me, and let me decide.

- Animal Crossing: I was on the fence about this one until I read the official thread here. I decided to buy it and it was a great decision. My wife is STILL playing it and we've even started a new town.

Gunstar Heroes this Gunstar Heroes that. Finally bought it a year ago and it was GAY!!! Contra pisses all over Gunstar.

You really do have to take what some people say around here with a grain of salt. Take Ico for instance, so many people claimed it was an emotionally moving tour de force of a game. Wheras I thought it was nothing more than Prince of Persia with a new gimmick, and that the game was extremely short and devoid of any replay value.

On a positive note, I've recently been playing a bunch of DC shooters thanks to certain posters here, and I know for a fact that I would not of touched these games with a 10 foot pole had it not been for them.

And then there's the opposite effect, BMX XXX was pretty much trashed by every human being on the planet, yet this only made me want to try it out for myself, and the game turned out to be a hell of a lot better than people give it credit for.

I can't think of many times this has happened to me. When I was younger and more impressionable, I had a Master System and all of my friends had NESes, so it was pretty much impossible. Then again, if I was impressionable I probably would not have had the ole SMS.

These days.. I dunno.. the only time I can think of being convinced to buy a game I otherwise would not have was Puyo Pop for NGPC. I hated it and sold it because it was so frustrating and I didn't know how to play. Ironically enough, I gave Puyo another chance and now it's one of my favourite series ever! I am a die-hard Puyo lover. In a strange twist, my friend who had convinced me to buy the NCPC game in the first place recently gave me his - free of charge. :)

Oh yeh, sicne it was mentioned, Ico would have been on my list too, had I actually bought it. I rented it based entirely on the raving I heard at TNL.... and man, I loathed that game. I won't go into detail and derail the thread, but let's just say it's the worst game I have played in years (to be honest I dont play many stinkers at all though, I rarely rent and I am very good at making only good purchases)....

Chu Chu Rocket was on sale for the GBA, so I bought it, based on the talk about it here in the forums. I played it for 5 seconds and it didn't click with me.

I also got Mark of Kri based on good talk about it in these forums, unfortunately it's still in my pile o' shame. :(

CCR for GBA takes quite a bit of getting used to, because the control scheme is different than it was on Dreamcast. I hope you at least tried the puzzles before you stopped playing though... that's the best past of the game (and it's less dependent on the controls). There are a billion puzzles to solve, some of them are incredibly hard...

Oddly I swore up and down that I'd never buy Metal Gear Solid, because I thought thete was no way in hell a game could live up to the hype of streight 10's in EGM. That and it was one of those "bandwagon" games that I figured was heavy on the mayhem killing sprees and light on substance and gameplay. I eventually bought it and fuck was I ever wrong.

I would have never purchased KOTOR with out all the last minute super hype the game got from Reviews and Folks around here. And I love the game.

Phantasy Star Online. I hate it because there is no one to play with.

Vice City, and I regretted it. I sold it to a friend about 2 weeks later. Also Ikaruga. I kind of regret that too. It's a great game, but I'm not too into shooters. I should have known better.

I'd like to add Ico and Animal Crossing to my list.

Ico-I rented it, but should have known I wouldn't like it because I fucking hate games like this. Bored me to death, put it down after the first play through and never played it again. I hate puzzle games like that.

Animal Crossing-I just don't understand the attraction. You do the same shit over and over again and if that annoying ass cat girl was real I'd kill her with that shovel. I don't like "collecting" games, so it makes sense that I wouldn't like it.

Dang, I could list a ton of games I've bought off heavy recommendations from this board, or the widespread opinion of gamers in general. Often it just leaves me thinking people are crazy/have no clue what a good games actually involves, but just as often I get something awesome or at least decent.

In no particular order -

Gamecube: In retrospect, this has been my worst system purchase ever. My Neo Geo Pocket and its 6 month North American retail run was way more enjoyable. Metroid was good and I liked Wind Waker well enough, but I really would have been just fine without a GC. I may trade it in a month.

Lunar: Ugh. This hands down wins my "most overrated hardcore game of all time" award. I felt betrayed from the opening cinema - "Hooray! Let's go on a magical adventure!" It was like dungeons & dragons day in the special ed class.

Final Fantasy Tactics: Pretty cool game I would never have played were it not for all the buzz. I don't think it's the best rpg ever like a bunch of people do, but it was well worth playing.

Bangai-O: After reading 5 different people claiming this to be their favourite game ever on this board, I figured there had to be something to it and tracked it down. Alas, there really isn't. Not bad, but solid 7/10 territory.

Xenogears: A wildly uneven game with perhaps the most ill-concieved battle system of the modern era, but the last 10 hours or so more than made up for its shortcomings.

Phantasy Star II: Yuck. You've got to have some pretty heavy nostalgia goggles on to think this game has much going for it gameplay-wise. I'd way rather play Final Fantasy I.

Metroid Prime: Picked it up after all the first-day purchase guys were practically climaxing from it. Very well made game, although I wouldn't toss it into my personal 10/10 category.

Rez: It's games like this that make taking other people's recommendations worthwhile. I probably would have passed on it, but I'm very glad I didn't.

I'm about to buy KOTOR as well, even though I swore never to buy another crappy Star Wars game.

I didn't like Record of Lodoss War and thought Valkyrie Profile was dissapointing(though I want to give it another shot). I also absolutely hated Lunar 2. Horrible horrible game.


On the flip-side, kullmonkeys was a good find and Breath of Fire 4. I really didn't like any of the other games in that series and definitely never would have thought to get it had it not been for some positive words here.

Evil Zone as well. Though I'd like to replace it with the import, I was satisfied with that purchase. Danzaibar is one of my favorite game characters.

I feel the opposite. I'm 20 hours into BoFIV right now and it's easily my least favorite of the series (haven't played V yet). It's also one of the most boring games I've ever played. I actually say it out loud every time I come away from it, "damn, this is one of the most boring games I've ever played."

As for peer pressure games, I almost caved in and bought GTA3 when it hit $20. Then I realized that it's gay. I will buy Ace Combat 4 soon only because it gets so much praise online. I'd normally never buy a flight game. The last one I bought was Warhawk back in '96.

Why do you find it boring? Just curious. I loved the idleness of the pacing. There was this one scenario where everyone gets stranded, and so you just sort of do nothing for a few hours. I enjoy those type of scenes. Like being stranded on the raft in Illusion of Gaia, but I don't think that lasted too long~

I don't know. There actually is a great deal to like about BoFIV. But maybe the characters are just too... blah? Especially compared to the cuteness of III's. Lack of a true overhead map kinda takes the adventurous feel out of things for me too. The story is taking a looooooooong time to ramp up in any direction (if it ever does). But it's likely just my own personal preference this month more than anything else. I don't trust my own tastes anymore. What I love today I might find boring and plain next week and vice versa. Just depends on what I'm in the mood for. I've played through about fifteen turn-based RPGs in the last six months so maybe I've just had my fill for awhile.

MDK 2: I never liked the look of it but so many good reviews forced the purchase. I was right. It was shit.

Bangai-O: Same again, I even played a level 1 demo, but so much praise! It was deeply average.

Gunbird 2: Tried it and didn't like it too much. But slavering praise made be buy it. I still try to play it but I can't like it. Gunbird is miles before it.

I could finally cave in and get Lodoss and Jet Set Radio but I know, I really deep down know, that I won't like them. Or Rez either.

Are the puzzles different from the actual stages? I find that directing the "chus" with arrows gameplay kinda lame. I've seen this kinda gameplay in other games which involved conveyor belts back in the NES days...

The Good Aura
Advance Wars - I've always been a fan of SRPGs, but would have never crossed over into pure strategy if not for the people talking up AW.

Grand Theft Auto III - Still the best game of this generation, and I would have missed it if not for the wild ranting on this board.

Jet Grind Radio - My initial reaction to this game was "promoting graffiti has to be the dumbest idea ever." While that is still true, the gameplay wrapped over in the spray paint is pure gold.

PC Gaming - I still owe people like NeoZeedeater a lot for posting enough PC topics to get me back into it.

The Bad Aura
Ico - Prince of Persia, which also sucked, with the added "feature" of having to drag a worthless woman around wife you. It's like Married with Children: The Game.

Rez - Take a bland ass 3D shooter that is not even close to as good as Panzer Dragoon or Star Fox and add rythmic bullshit. Proof positive that everything Sega makes is not gold.

I guess twice as many good recommendations as bad ones make listening to you people worthwhile afterall. :p

TNL-Recommended Gems:

Rez (mostly due to Kaneda & Click)
Orta (kabuki comes to mind)
Shinobi (PS2) (MechDeus mostly made me do it)
GunValkyrie (although I can't play it with the S, thanks Ammadeau & Schlep)

GTA3 (I found it b-o-r-i-n-g)

Friends-Recommended Gems:

Splinter Cell & Halo - No way was I planning to buy either of these, but a little hands-on mixed with a little hype, and I was sold.

Games Most People Hated But I Bought Anyway:

Crimson Sea - one of the most ignored and underappreciated games this generation

Vexx - Clone? Maybe. Ugly character? Yep. Fun? Oh hell yes. More of you need to give this game a try, despite Acclaim hatred. Despite the sometimes-twitchy camera, it's got some wonderful platforming in some beautiful levels.

Morrowind. More because of the previews, I guess, because I bought it near launch. One of the most boring games ever.

I'm glad I could contribute to Yoshi getting back into some PC gaming action. :)

TNL'ers made me pick up Fantavision, which is a damn good puzzle game with awesome cinemas.

Weird.

BoF4 is probably in my top five rpgs of all time.

I loved the characters, and the story dicotomy was really good.

Something about it just "clicked" fer me I suppose, too bad you aren't enjoying it.

Far too many. There are very few games that I get based on looks alone. I like to base purchases off of other people opinions who I agree with on gaming aspects. I will just cover the bad/poor stuff:

Devil May Cry: Why so many people like this is beyond me, but to each his own.

Splinter Cell: This game was SO not worth it. The GFX and every thing is bad ass. Gameplay? Sux, NEXT.

Dragon Warrior VII : Still occasionally try to wade through this game, but this is so linear and LONG that it hurts.

Legend of Dragoon: This was good until about Disc 3 when you max out your Dragoon powers then there is nothing left for it.

Final Fantasy IX: Why?

Kof '00: Yea, sure

SamSho IV: WTF embodied

Tekken 4: See above.

It is strange, The really bad ones are only from the last 5 years or so. It use to not be that bad.

I wouldn't call it peer pressure but I might try Deus Ex because of all the swell things Bob Vila says about it.

I am not sure I understand the question.In puzzle mode the gameplay system is the same (arrows, rockets, etc), but there is no timer or live action. Basically, there is a board set up with a number of ChuChus and KapuKapus set up. You are given a set number of arrows to place on the board to solve the puzzle. Then you hit "play" to see if it worked. If it didn't. You start over.... and there are a billion of these puzzles in the game.

"Japanese style" RPG's: I may have a short attention span, but I just cannot complete these due to boredom. It feels like work to spend countless hours completing such a structured story. Strangely enough, I love Shenmue and Morrowind (which many would find boring).

Halo - For some reason I've never been interested in this. I like multiplay, FPS'es, and playing them on a console, but for some reason I never wanted to buy it, until I found it for $25. Despite some issues between it and my XBOX (halting my progress in the campaign mode), I still managed to play it for over 12 hours yesterday. I looked at my eyes in the mirror at 4am and noticed that my eyes were bloodshot from staring at the TV so long. An excellent buy.

Rez - I bought this for a friend when it was $20 at Best Buy. I only want to play it once ever few months, but it's great in short bursts with the lights out and volume up.

NUON - I'm guessing that the forums are where I heard about this, since I doubt that it got much exposure otherwise. I was also in need of a DVD player, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I found all of my games at Best Buy (although someone else had to find Tempest 3000 for me), and I consider all of them great buys, since they were all a dollar apiece.

You've sparked an interest in me as well. I'm considering getting Aliens vs. Predator 2 and Dungeon Siege, both of which are only $22 here. I figure I'd go it a bit at a time.

Query: Does AvP play like the Jaguar title (FPS-style)? I was looking at the box today and it looks pretty good.

In no particular order:

Tail of the Sun: Bought this on a recommendation from Gamefan. Ran around aimlessly munching fruit and spearing hapless monkeys for a while; returned it after one too many episodes of watching my little caveman fall asleep on the side of a mountain, slide into an ocean, sink to the bottom and snore blissfully until he drowned.

Shenmue: Everyone was raving about how revolutionary this game was. I played for about an hour, turned it off, and never came back.

Gran Turismo: This one actually has a happy ending. I ignored it because I wasn't into racing games, but I got hooked playing with a friend. Bought it and played the hell out of it. On the other hand, when I bought GT2, I realized I'd already had all the racing sim play I could take, so I returned it.

Gunstar Heroes: Never intended to buy it; didn't look like my kind of game, but crumpled after hearing enough praise, and never regretted it. Fantastic fun, especially with a friend.

Gran Turismo, I liked what I saw in screens, dug the reviews praising it, then I actually played the damn game and was bored stiff. Wow, forgettable tracks, boring gameplay, and the lone highlight of the game for me was being able to wash your car. Also, the license tests sucked ass, royally.

Well, the length should cause the disc to melt, and the box to combust, which would rid at least one copy of the game from the planet. I think burying them in the desert would be more effecient though. Or just skeet shooting with them.

I figured they're good for the price. I saw the review for Dungeon Siege on Extended Play and it looked pretty cool. The price is right as well.

AvP has always interested me (I beat the framey Jag version) and it's also cheap.

I'm open to suggestions, as long as they aren't multiplayer FPS titles or RTS. I love FPS but ironically, multiplayer doesn't really interest me (and I suck with a mouse and keyboard :p ).

Mars Matrix- I can recognize why others think it's great but it's just not for me. At all.

Ratchet & Clank- I have no idea why I don't like this game. Everyone else does, I used to love platformers, you get to shoot stuff, and it's gorgeous. Too bad I'm didn't have a bit of fun with it.

Skullmonkeys, on the other hand, is one of the best recommended titles I've gotten. It all evens out over time.

Sega is my favorite company but I love any great game. I loved Contra 3, Gunstar Heroes, counterstrike, battlefield 1942, SF2, DMC, Soul Calibur, Most of the final fantasy games except FF7 and FFX, Chrono Cross, Super Mario Kart etc.

So I don't know what you're smoking.

On the good side, I got GTA3 after everyone talked about how great it was, without having played it myself. I loved it.

I can't really think of anything that I've bought out of peer pressure that was horrible, although I got Bangai-o for the DC and thought it was strictly OK. I don't regret getting it though, it was well worth the $20.

Oh wait, I can think of something. Final Fantasy 9. My friends, both online and in life, declared that it was the greatest thing since Chrono Trigger. $40 later, I discover that it, in fact, sucked ass.

Atelier Marie & Elie for Dreamcast - I was led to believe that these games could be played without being fluent in Japanese. I've just discovered that's not true.

I found Bangai-O to be way overrated. Shenmue kind of sucks too.

Melf: AvP2 has pretty fun single player. The Marines campaign is pretty damn scary. I loved it, personally. It's a shame the Predator and Aliens campaign aren't as good.

Earthbound (Mother 2) for SNES. A friend of mine hyped it to me a few years back, not really a gamer of any sorts but an all around smart as hell guy so I went for it. It's a rocking game, gives me an excuse to not just play FF6/FF4 again for the hundreth time when I want some SNES turn based action. I'll pass on his recomendation here, play some Earthbound!

No, though they are perfectly playable with a faq until you get a handle on the gameplay. No faq is listed for the DC version on gamefaqs, but its the same game as saturn and psx versions.

Crimson Sea among others, that was just the most recent.

I have finally played Dynasty Tactics, which StriderKyo has praised on several occasions.

It is a damn fine strategy game. It's more complex than the Vandal Hearts-type stuff I'm used to but I'm sure I'll figure it all out. I love the music too.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater- Figured it wasn't my thing, but ended up falling in love with it.

Skygunners- Decent, but got tired of it quickly.
