This is a game that only TNL could love.
I don't like it and I expect to hear about it endlessly for years. Be it bitching about how the casual ape wouldn't appreciate it or how it is the greatest game of all time.

Mmm. Texas Roadhouse rules! I like their steak! And the bread with cinnamon butter is so awesome! *sweatdrop* Guess I gotta be on topic. Uh... yeah. Bought the game but haven't played it yet. Been playing DDR Extreme. My friend played it a little and liked it. Hope I get to it eventually.Quote:

What minigame? I missed it on the page entirely and am too tired at the moment to wade through all that Japanese.
Can eyes actually melt out of their sockets when you're tired?

No, I think this is a game only you don't like.Quote:

it's directly under the wallpapers. you can't miss it because there's a picture of a red space ship for that section. it's sort of a shooter-puzzler that you can get through in a few scant minutes.Quote:

The reason why you can't beat anyone in 3rd Strike is because you waste your time playing shitty budget games that people on TNL tell you to buy so you can front.
Just for a little bit of perspective, S|1p is the one who bought DOAXBV at full price and declared it the greatest game ever.
I have memories of a Raging Demon that connected, and someone getting hit by Ken's cr. medium -> super like 3x in a row.
We were both out of practice and terrible =(
Whats this I hear of fronting?
Protip: SL1P has declared every game that has come out this month GOTY.Quote:

Just got it from EB, and it was, in fact a gut. Traded 3 old ass games in and just had to pay 6 bucks (it was the last copy). I opened it and looked at the disc just to be sure and the guy goes "It's brand new, just had to take it out for display so no one steals it." So I said "Just wanted to make sure". It's in perfect condition so it's all good. I have yet to play it.
Likewise, went to EB and got the gutted copy. No big deal. Fun game.
Katamari mp3's fan created soundtrack, get it while its hot!

Woohoo! Very cool, thanks.
Most japanese game i've ever played. really weird game. glad i only paid 6 bucks.

I am curious as to why they bothered to re-dub the cutscenes (is there any game on the PS2 that only has a Japanese voice track? It might be a Sony policy...)
One other question I have (and this pertains to budget titles in general) is how publishers will be able to keep this up. Could the practice of selling a game in Japan at ~$50 and then turning around and selling it for $20 be considered dumping? Will this disparity ever create a backlash in Japan or Eurpoe (in Japan, probably not -- console games seem to be less reveleant as time passes). I really do like the trend of the price of games starting to match their initial budgets, though.

Anyone else trying for a 1000 meter katamari on the final level? After last nights 725, and taking into account that I had a few minutes here and there of dead time in the collecting, I think it's doable with a bit of practice.
I also got 100% on the credits sequence. Go me! :)
James
I don't think there's enough actual stuff to go over 900 meters. My high is something like 865 and that's with a lot of time spent just collecting the remaining crap spread all over the ocean.Quote:

I'm just getting around to playing this one. Yes, I snagged the last local copy. Yes, it was a gut. :p Anyway, the sense of satisfaction you get when rolling up people is amazing, especially when they they were knocking crap off me a few minutes before.
I wish beating the game would unlock a stage that started you off with a tiny Katamari and removed the time limit =(
Anyway, I was thinking of starting a Score Attack thread, with a high score for each stage (depending on the stage requirements)... there really aren't that many.
If no one does it by the time I get home, I'll probably do it.
Can anyone tell me if there is a choice of language (is that J track still intact), or just engrish?
Tell VF4:Evo I said hi back. And that I said Katamari Damacy pwns it.Quote:

Because English is the official language of this country. :pQuote:

Seriously, I love how little they changed for the U.S. release. I was wondering, though...I know they re-dubbed the cutscenes (I agree with ChaoofNee, the way they're dubbed makes them even funnier than they would have been if they spoke in Japanese), but what about the in-game voices? All the humans you roll over cry out in English ("What's happening?!?!?"), were they English in the Japanese version or did Namco re-dub them as well?
I don't know...the cost of the translation was probably minimal, and the game itself doesn't appear to have had the biggest development budget in the world. Since Namco's working on a sequel, I assume it sold well to it's initial target audience (Japanese people...I mean, no one made this with Americans in mind). I assume U.S. budget sales of games like this are just gravy.Quote:

I don't really know because I rolled by it so quickly...but I think I saw a TG-16/PC Engine Hucard game waiting to be rolled up! That's awesome. :)
Yup, that's exactly what it was.
So is there no J track for the game? Suckage if there isn't.
Not really. I don't see why you care so much about what... 10 lines of dialogue that you wouldn't be able to understand?Quote:

Oh, the music is in Japanese, you party pooping dicks.
Personally, I'm fairly impressed with the quality of the translation work that was done. The King speaks like some Monty Python reject, which would have been a prime target for some juicy Engrish, but it all makes complete sense. The monotone voices in the cut scenes are perfect as well. Thumbs-up, Namco. Just translate the text and voices and leave the content untouched. That's the way to go.
I didn't really notice that anyone was speaking Japanese...I just noticed random English or amusing cries (or, in some cases, singing). Guess I'll listen closer the next time I run over somebody.Quote:

Once you do it (and finish the game) a little bubble should appear on the stage marker, and when you select it the king will ask you if you want to do a normal timed run or just roll around forever.Quote:

And here's a neat excerpt from aechris' FAQ for the game on GameFAQs -
Quote:
There are also three different areas to play without time a limit called "Eternal" stages. Please keep in mind you need to have finished the game before they open up. You can unlock them in the following ways:
Eternal 1 - Build up the ball past 1m30cm in Make a Star 4
Eternal 2 - Build up the ball past 25m in Make a Star 8
Eternal 3 - Build up the ball past 800m in Make the Moon
If you hit triangle at the Earth once you've beaten all of the levels (minus the Eternal stages), you can watch the movies all again and you get a sound test for all the music in the game. Excellent, excellent bonus, considering the music is so awesome.
On top of this, if you can speed clear the stages you will get a shooting star to view in the View Stars mode. To view these stars, simply enter View Stars mode and press the button associated with that level.
Thanks Jeremy.
All done.
Yeah, I gotta try that stuff out when I get home. This game has far more replay value than I gave it credit for.
Hell, I was worried that dub/sub debate #2,003,028 would begin and derail this thread when someone started bitching about the lack of the stupid "J-track". Happily, we avoided that, but then this noob comes along. Props to Mzo for keeping the thread pure. :)
Anyway, back on track...man, this game has some physics engine. It may not be the prettiest game out there but the way it works with everything sticking to the ball in real-time...sweet.
Don't know if it's been mentioned yet...
But Namco's "Taiko Drum Master" will have song from KD on it =D
As far as Master and I cansee, there is no level that lets you start out as the really tiny ball. The big endless one goes from 1 meter up. Still fricking awesome though.
Stage 4, 7 and Final eh?Quote:

I've got the first Eternal unlocked but couldn't figure out how to do the others. I'd been going for the giganta-ball on Level 10 anyway (one of the best final levels ever, I should add) so Level 8 is the other one to concentrate on. Of course, then I have to consider whether it's worth trying for 100% item collection.
I love a game that holds its play value past completetion. I hereby nominate this game to go on the same lofty fan-geek plane of consideration inhabited by Rez and Ico.
James
I just got this game (my first US PS2 game oddly enough) and I was thinking of it as the next Rez, since it seems almost alien from the preset genres that I've gotten so used to. Also like Rez, the music seems like one of its best features. It reminds me of JSR just for it's colorful enviroment as well.
Lots of fun too. It seems to be selling well in the US, so hopefully we'll get the sequel.
Indeed. Maybe not Game of the Year (though I so rarely play recent games for being so far behind, I wouldn't know) but sure as hell has to be Soundtrack of the Year. Anyone wanna dispute? Give me a title.
Question for all, seeing as the places I'd want to check are inconvenient- how hard/easy is the game to find in your area? I know that Gamestop/EB are most likely sold out, but what other stores have piles of it? Circuit City? Toyr R Us? I'm just thinking that the Gamespot article might be a bit premature in trumpeting the rarity of Katamari Damacy.
James
The levels where you have to get an Animal can be ultra annoying. I'll be tiptoing through the level building my ball so I can ever handle a bigger cow or bear, and then will roll over what looks to be a regular sign and get "Cowwwwww!" and it turns out the sign has a picture of a Cow on it. Or its a cow colored road cone or something. Does anyone know if there is like a true biggest bear/cow you get?
Yesterday my local Bestbuy had four copies. Now they have three. From the shelf space I doubt they had many more than that to start with. Was the first place I looked so can't comment on others.Quote:

last night, i was playing stage 4 to unlock the unlimited timer. the camera is terrible when your katamari gets big.. took me a few tries to beat 1.3 meters, simply because i couldn't see anything in the house when it got above 1.1. at least the other non-house stages aren't as bad.
YES. I couldn't do it. The closest I got was 1.28m =(Quote:

Yeah, the music is all over the place on this one. I love it.
I guess I'll try it again when I get home, but I was getting pretty annoyed at stage 4 =(
Every time I got a constellation and that little girl said "Oh! I feel it! I feel the cosmos!" or whatever it was, I broke out laughing. The English is perfect.Quote:

I love going really slow on The Moon stage, and just wandering around everywhere as small as I can be. Going to the big cities in the middle of the ocean when you are only like 12 meters is really fun.
This is already stating to go up on eBay. One ended for $50 (the only one that wasn't "buy it now") today. I'm picking one up tomorrow and putting it up asap.
You have to be logged in to see it (I think).
Two Eternals earned, one to go. Then on to maximizing my item collection (and I love that it tells me where I've missed stuff) and getting a cow and bear bigger than medium. I can't believe the incredible replay value this game has.
It's actually really nice that it's so easy to beat. If I got sidetracked and had to put it aside right now I wouldn't have that "pile of shame" thing going on, but I've also got a ton of extra goals to go for. When I say that I want games under the 40-hour epic thing this is exactly what I'm thinking of.
