Bring on Germany,.... Sweden just beat Canada at the WWC! |-)

Happy day! The Sweden-Canada game was really entertaining but Sweden really dominated the game. Canada did well to take a lead and keep it close. I am proud of them... but I am much prouder of Sweden for winning! :)

Plus, the US losing is always a wonderful thing. I am thrilled there will be an all-Euro final even tho it will be hard for Sweden to defeat Germany. Maybe Canada can take 3rd - especially if the US is dejected from not making the final (think about Canada-Finland in hockey at the 98 Olympics).

I think Germany will win easily, but I won't write of Sweden. But beating the U.S. 3-0 doesn't come easily. I might actually watch the final.

Here's a question though: As much as I don't want to sound sexist, the women's game just isn't as entertaining as the men's in any aspect. It's like watching kids play. What is it going to take to make women's football more popular because I doubt they'll change the style. Just for conversation.

The final score was 2:1. Sweden had the run of play and was quite unlucky to fall behind late in the second half. But then they pulled it out in the last 20 minutes. It was a well deserved result but Canada should be proud too. They were the lowest rated team heading in to the tourney, even if they had shown some better form in recent months. Getting that far and topping China is a huge achievement.

Regarding the final, yeh, Germany will be a huge favourite but you never know. I like Germany a bit too so I don't mind if they win but I'd really love to see Sweden pull off the upset. ;)

As for your question... I am not sure about it's merits. I think it is more a question of the teams and tactics than the gender. Have you ever watched Serie A? Italian football is awful to watch. They play a "technical game", which means it's like watching theatre with all the play acting and flopping on the ground. Soo boring. I am sure you have watched MLS... those games are so hard to get into even tho' the quality of play has improved 10 fold since the league was founded. It's now nearing Division 2 quality. :p I tried so hard to get into Metrostars when I was still living in NJ but man it was tough. :\

Even "div 2 quality" should not be taken as an insult. They showed the English playoffs on TV here last spring and they were fantastic to watch.

With the women, it really just depends. Tonights game was great. It was better than a lot of Premiership/Le Championnat games I have watched lately. It was sloppy at times but many of the ladies have good skill and it was very entertaining, thanks mainly to the Swedes attacking style. They were very well coached and fluid. The other Canada games were pretty boring, to be honest. So, er, yeh, I think it just depends. It's like tennis I suppose. The best women can't beat the 100th best man but it does not mean it can't be fun to watch in it's own right. Also, it helps a lot to have a rooting interest. ;)



ps. I think those Swedish girls could have beaten the Montréal Impact. :p

I've only got 3 choices on what to support, since that's where I was born.

I don't like Blue so Man City is out.
Stockport County, I like, but it physically pains me to watch them. I'm half tempted to stalk them until they let me run oun the field sometime.

In either case, watching women play soccer (and, in this case, it's not football), is like watching 10 white men play basketball, only not so dripping with estrogen.

Not football? The two teams playing in the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Women's World Cup Final are UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) members: Svenska Fotbollförbundet and Deutscher Fußball-Bund.

Meh. The ball is round and they kick it, the there are XI players, two goals. It's football enough for me. I'll agree that the US women's team and the thankfully defunct "WUSA" were insufferable and absolutely unwatchable (as well as and nauseatingly obnoxious)... but not because they were female.

*shrug*

I'm looking forward to next weekend's matches.

I've always preferred United to City, which sucked in the late 1980's when they were consitently crap, just as it will suck when they fade away again.

My contention is that women's soccer is unwatchable because they are women. Some won't like that, but that's how it is.

It's like watching a farm team when a major league game is on. Whatever they play, it's not football and not entertaining.

I like to watch titties bounce as much as the next man, but even I have my standards.

Fair enough. To each his own.

In general I'd probably agree... but I have enjoyed watching Sweden play for whatever reason. :)
