Star Wars: Republic Commando

So I picked up the new OXM for the Otogi demo and left the main screen of the disc playing through its videos when I was done. They had a montage video of a bunch of upcoming XBox games and the last one was Star Wars: Republic Commando which I haven't heard of yet.

It looks to be a squad-based FPS about eradicating alien species in a similar way to Starship Troopers, although it could just be you playing the leader and issuing orders. The graphics were really pretty but the view window is so small it's hard to tell if that was just FMV or recorded realtime. Anyone have any idea about this?

When's release?

It sounds like the game is an update to the PC game Force Commander.

Oops. I did'nt notice it was an FPS. I read the part about squad based gameplay and assumed it was like Force Commander. :(

The video you watched was just FMV. I seen it during E3. Looked like a SW version of Aliens to me. I dont think there even has been any gameplay shots yet.

Yeah, they showed a teaser video for this at the E3 XBox conference.

I saw when it first got announced around E3, looked pretty cool in the video. It's one of the games I'm hoping LucasArts does right. Could be their replacement for Dark Forces (since it went and got all Jedi on us)

XBN has an "EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK!!!!!" feature on Republic Commando in this month's issue (March). Oh man, it looks fantastic. The graphic engine is on par with Halo, if not better. The suits of armor look insane.

As far as the review reports, it's going to take place between movies II and III. It was mentioned that this isn't going to be a "heroic" type game either, meaning no Jedi, no Han Solo swooping in to save the day, etc. It's going to be gritty, dark, and threatening. I like threatening.

It was also mentioned that they'll be getting Jango Fett himself (Temuera Morrison) to voice the clone troopers, with a few sound-alikes for variety. They cite the fact that identical twins never sound the same as a valid reason for this.

It's supposed to release this Fall. I'll be there day one.

Yeah, I just got done reading that and it sounds slick as hell. It sure looks pretty in screenshots, I hope it plays as good as it looks.

I just got through reading this as well, and I have to say that I'm really looking to buy this upon release. In fact I think this looks a lot better than Star Wars: Battlefront, and I was really pumped over that.

Just got the latest [March] issue from GMR and Republic Commando is on the cover [well sort of]. A friend in French class looked at a screenshot and said it looked like a ripoff of Metroid Prime because of the visor effect. :lol:

Picked this up today for Xbox. SURPRISE! Its fun! It seems really well done. Besides certain situations that tell you where to put your teamates its really good. Your even able to tell your team to head to certain points, hold and regroup and such.Controls are nice and smooth too. The guns are a lot more powerful than I thought they would be and grenades kick ass. My bro says the online is well done too. Its set up similar to Unreal I guess. Its kinda basic by todays standards but its a lot of fun to play right now. The few levels I played had lots of stuff going on. The physics seem well done too. Splattering a dirty Genosian(?) with your fist blade is fun stuff. Especially when they splat on your visor. Graphics are better than I expected too. Not the best looking Xbox game but in the top 10% I would say.

If your looking for a new online game also this seems pretty damn cool and easy to get into.

I've been pretty excited about this one from the star...but at the same time I'd rather play the wait and see tactic.

Any one else already pick it up?

I played the demo off the KOTOR II disc a week or so ago and it seemed interesting. Not $50 interesting, especially considering the other games on my plate at the moment, but enough so that I'll definately pick it up at some point. Plus I'm a whore for decent Star Wars games.

I did find it hysterical that the mini-boss or whatever big droid thing in the demo was apparently built by people that hadn't planned on its adversaries to have the ability to walk in circles. All I did was run up to point blank range and stay behind it, walking in circles around it whenever it tried to turn towards me. Took a while because I was out of ammo and had to peck at it with my weak recharging pistol but it eventually died without ever touching my squadmates or I. Nice design job, there.

It's a awsome game BTW.

I was so excited over the trailer of this at gametrailers.com that I wet myself at some point. Hearing these "It's good but not GREAT" reviews has me disappointed. I'll get it when it drops in price.

I just finished this. Aside from feeling some serious deja vu via the story suddenly ending, I can't say I can find much wrong with this game at all. Some of the enemies are hard to kill, but when you use proper team tactics they become much easier. All I'm gonna say is there had better be a Republic Commando 2 waiting for me on May 24 or whenever the movie comes out, there are some serious loose ends I want to clear up.

To owners of widescreen tvs: It's been confirmed that this game does not support 480p when the X Box is set to 16:9 in the dashboard. The only way to play this game in 480p is to play fullscreen. Yeah, it sucks. Hopefully they will release a patch for this.

Thats odd, because I'm playing in widescreen and its running in 480P. Pretty sure I didnt download any updates.

My TIT of a brother just now looked on our XBox and seen that it wasnt set on widescreen! HA! The game looks much better without widescreen on for the 480p. Even streched though you can barely notice its widened.

Why do people that play most of their games on PC ALWAYS ALWAYS bring up the "but my game plays better with a mouse and KB" argument. I swear when I read it I can almost hear the nerdy whine of the PC whore typing it. Yeah the mouse and KB is better. We get it already. For fuck's sake we all have PCs, obviously we know. Some of us just prefer using a controller. And don't give me this auto aim BS. Hardly any games auto aim.

Nope I'm not ALL for PC gaming. But I know good and well I would rather play with a mouse and keyboard online rather than a controller period. Just my prefrence. Besides GoldenEye must be played without a keyboard and mouse even if they ever made and atachment I would still use the controller. But Games like Halo and RC just need to be played with the mouse and keyboard IMO.

What they do instead of auto aim, they dumb down the AI in the game and give console user more of a "luck" acuracy shot. Look it up on google sometime.

Back on subject though... Commando really is a lot of fun. I am REALLY happy with the way it turned out. I wasnt even going to get it but picked it up for the hell of it. Happy I did. Hopefully they make more.

yea the game came out of the blue for me. The opening 5 or 10 minutes really suck you into the game.

I'm pretty much done with it. I think I may have 15-30 minutes left to play. In fact I may be 5 minutes away from being done. GREAT game. The demo really kinda of pushed me away from getting it but I'm happy I did. The game plays better than the demo and has some really cool frantic battles. I didnt even like how th egam etold you where you could set up your squad in the demo but it grew on me and I actually like it now. Makes planning big battles a lot quicker and not as slow as it could have been. The game deserves an 8.5 if I reviewed games.

shiiiiiiiit. just finished it. I want to play some more! :D Halo 2ish ending though. Damn them. Can't wait to see the movie to see if anything in the game turns up in it. I hope this game sells well, which I think it will when word gets out how cool it is.

Argue all you guys want about PC vs. console, it really doesn't matter here...



...Because this game is a whole lot better on the PC. It's coded beautifully and runs far better than Doom III, HL2, or WoW while in 1280 with everything turned on high (and that's compared to running those other games in either 1152 or 1024 on medium or medium/high), it's really a far more gorgeous engine then playing the Xbox demo led me to believe. Having all the keys surrounding the normal WASD setup also helps navigating the controls and controlling the team a lot.

I'm not sure how far through it I am, I just encountered an area that I'm sure will take a while to get through and I doubt it'll be where the final showdown takes place. So far it's actually been really good, this is quite possibly the only time that I've had a squad in a videogame and it's actually felt like I have a squad (along with Full Spectrum Warrior, although this one is more immersive). The tactics, movement and cover, controlling everyone, resuscitation and healing, it's all done so well and fluid. The way that you can drop but your team can still function and clear an area before coming to shock you back to your feet is awesome.

My only real complaint is that if you strip away the graphical polish and remove the team aspect it's an incredibly standard FPS, something that really haunts the parts where you're seperated from the team.

IBTN. I am loving it so far. As Mech said, the squad elements here crush stuff like SOCOM, where it felt like a chore. In SW:RC, your squad actually helps you, due to great AI programming. They help you even more when you give them good directions. I am only in the fourth or fifth area so far, but it is fantastic.

Its awesome not to have to worry about my team ALL the time. Yeah they will die if I do something stupid but overall they are pretty reliable.

Since I needed the HD space I finally went back to this to finish it up, and overall I'd have to say this is really a great game and is definately one of the best Star Wars games ever. While that may not normally be saying much, it captured a lot of the atmosphere from a different point of view than normal while still being a crapton of fun.

The squad chatter was definately a high point, with a lot of the lines during the Wookie protection area actually making me laugh ("There's a hanger up ahead we need you to secure." "Another hanger?" "What can I say? Those Wookies love their hangers."). Even though most of the rooms in each area all looked almost exactly the same they kept changing location often enough that it never became boring, and they did a beautiful job on the forests of Kashyyk (however it's spelled). I'd also like to mention that this game has the most badass looking Wookies of any Star Wars related piece of media I've ever seen, these guys were big and tough and watching them throw enemy soldiers around was awesome.

Not to say it didn't have its problems, which escalated pretty bad near the end. There were way too many droid despensers tossed out, turning the game into a Star Wars-themed Gauntlet Legends at some points, and the AI got progressively worse in the later levels. I'm not sure why, but I had zero problems with the enemies in the first half but the further I got the more they started getting stuck on each other or would just stand out in the open not doing anything while I shot them. My favorite moment occured during the final assault in which a Super Battle Droid (such inventive names) got stuck inbetween two of my squadmates. All three of them were facing different directions and they were all just standing there not doing anything, until I ran up and beat the droid to death and then my squad proceeded like normal. I watched Wookies stop running mid-stride and just sorta float in place, sometimes my squadmates would get stuck on boxes or walls, and often the Trandoshens would get stuck in ceilings if I shot their backpacks. Overall these were minor problems but it was noticably sloppy in the last half.

On top of having way too many SPD despensers which meant fights that dragged on for way too long, they also had a weak buildup during the final area. All they did was toss a few spider robots (who are among the most uninteresting enemies to fight in the game) spread out amongst a couple rooms, and the final room is a battle against little tiny newborn bugs. After everything else, the best they can do for a finale is to have little hard-to-hit bugs that have even more trouble hitting you run around? Considering what they did for the second portion of the game that part reeks of them running out of ideas.

But nevertheless, I had a blast and will at somepoint gladly play through again. With this and the Cartoon Network series I'm starting to think the Clone Wars is one of the best things to happen to Star Wars.

I really like this game. I had images of Half Life running through my head with all the great prescripted events. It really reminds of Half-Life crossed with Counter-Strike or the original Rainbow Six added in. The score is great, and the fact that the developers went through the trouble of adding foley artists really adds to the ambiance of the levels. The single player parts do get a little generic, but going through the super droid factory and accidently bumping a droid is a pretty cool feeling. The last hangar on the 2nd level is pretty intense. The most interesting part is that the mutliplayer completely pales in comparison to Halo 2, I didn't realize how much of a benchmark Halo 2 was in terms of multiplayer till I tried it on this game and Timesplitters: FP. Overall I seriously think this game should be in contention for GOTY along with RE4, God of War, and KOTOR2.
