New York, Detroit, Ottawa, Toronto blackout?

Just saw it on the news. Seems that these major cities just blanked out. Should be on any news station. What the hell is this? I wonder how many TNL users have been knocked out due to this.

It was and as for power went out present here. I am New York city the outside fairness. The darkness therefore I can have, but, when appreciating returning, power floated and I feared the fact that it does not rise. The Twin Quasars of Rock (They Might Be Giants) rocked a venue so hard, they blew the entire system to shreds. Must've been Dan with his drum solo :)

Just got power back here. Wasn’t out too long, thankfully. Not much worse than what a typical thunderstorm will do. Everywhere else looks like a mess though, especially NYC.

For some reason everything GAMR posts sounds oddly poetic...

I got a call at work today explaining what to do if power died- shoo (politely, damn it) everyone out and close up, wait for the mall to either re-open or to close for the day. Wouldn't you know it, I didn't get to use my newfound knowlege at all.

Gosh, power just came back on 5 minutes ago. Was out for a bit over 7 hours, not too bad.

So, any news on when power will be restored?

I live right in the center of Jersey and apparenly half of my town lost power today. Mine went off for about 30 seconds before coming back but apparently some parts of my town lost it for hours. Strange that it would cut right through part of my town.

heh, I just got back from Brooklyn.

We were supposed to go to Manhattan, but they weren't letting cars into the city. My insane friends all wanted to go looting. Instead we went out to the pier on Coney Island and smoked a bowl, drank some beers, and looked up at the stars. A drunk New Yorican got us to clap his rythm while he played flute from a 20oz plastic soda bottle. Good times. While pissing through a chain link fence the sanguine moon made itself apparent behind the Cyclone. Reddest moon anybody'd ever saw. Kinda ominous, we hightailed it outa there. A cop on a motor scooter harrassed us with his highbeam light. Clearly we looked like a bunch of hooligans.

Best thing of all: no $8 toll for the bridge, nor any charge for the NJ Turnpike.

I imagine anyone who's interested has heard already, but the radios up there were reporting that the Niagra station on the US side got struck by lightning. Hot damn!

I just got power restored over here in Staten Island, the whole ordeal sucked since it was hot for like 11 hours and I couldn't sleep but nothing horrible.

Had nothing else to do than to browse some game magazines with my flashlight and listen to Led Zeppelin on my discman(wish I had an SP for GBA >_<). Anyway I hope everything goes back to normal soon to the rest of the areas hit with this rolling power outage.

The opening bit for the Conan O'brien show during the outage was cool as hell. In principle.Wish they had done a full hour just to see what would come of it~

Lucky fuck, Staten Island was boring as fuck. All I did last night as go to a local pizza place at 11 and order an entire pizza Sicilian vodka pie, because that's all they had left. In Brooklyn, well, in Benson Hurst at least, they were fucking BBQing at 11-12 because they didn't want the fucking meat to go bad. Lucky fuckers. Fortunatly, the $100 of meat my mother bought yesterday for Sunday didn't spoil.
The power came back on at about 1:22 in Staten Island, and I opened my eyes up as soon as it came back, because I had put every electrical thing on in my room so as to wake me up as soon as they went on. Unfortunatly, my cable modem wasn't up til about 2:30-3 and I was already sleeping because I got too frustrated with Stuntman by then. :lol: Then I had to take apart the alarm and play with the wires inside to shut it off. So if you want to break in my house now, I've no alarm. I wanted to fucking loot Best Buy. :(

Anyways, at the pizza place at 11:30 last night, some cop said Staten Island won't have power til noon today, because noone cares about us. :(


And according to the important peoples, it was a lightning bolt on the American side that did all this, though I don't buy a second of it. They just want to save the insurance companies, by saying it was a natural occurance.

Power just came back on here in Toronto for me. Man, that was the craziest experience I ever had. I'm just wondering if I should bother going to work or not (called my boss on my cellphone to say I still didn't have power) :|

Well, that was interesting. I'm in Long Island, NY, and the power went off at my job about 4:30 PM, the emergancy generators came on, but that wasn't enough, so they sent us home. From initial reports, I thought it was some new fucking terrorist attack, but now that doesn't seem to be a case. It's just a major fuck-up by the power companies, with America blaming Canada and Canada blaming America. Or whatever. I don't live far from my job (within 10 miles), but geting home was an adventure. Side streets were fine, but crossing a major intersection was a complete BITCH. It took hours for cops to get into position to start directing traffic, but until then trying to cross a major road was an adventure, with cars trying to cross at every concieveable angle. Instead of sitting on line to eventually get across, I kept darting around in an effort to find a spot that no one was using. Soon, I found one, and just went to my girlfriend's house. After which, we went to my house, because we have a lot of camping equipment (propane lamps and stoves, battery powered radios and flashlights), and just hung out there. Outside was weird, since all the street lights were out. It felt like we were in the wilderness of Vermont or something. It was cool.

Still, it was a lot worse in the city, from what I heard on the radio. Thousands trapped in the subways with no air conditioning, the LIRR was down, the traffic was insane, and people walking home over the east river bridge. Man, I'm glad I don't work in NYC.

Anyway, my power cam back on about 4:45 in the morning, but I was asleep, so did I wake up in time to go to work? Simple- the handy, dandy, Neo Geo Pocket Color. It has an alarm, so I tried it out and it worked like a charm. I checked my horrorscope, too. Thanks, SNK. :)

And, of course, power's back at my job, so I didn't get today off like I was hoping, and the power's still off at my girlfriend's house. As far as I'm concerned, the power damn welll better be back on at the movie theater tonight for Freddy Vs. Jason, or I'm going to be fucking pissed. :mad:

Anyway, I don't know why everyone freaks out so badly during blackouts. Sure, I can understand if you're trapped at work or in the city, but once you're home it's kinda fun. I just whipped out the Gameboy Advance SP (LOVE that back-lit screen) and my girlfriend and I did VS. mode in Advance Wars and just ate leftovers from the fridge all night. Well, an' other stuff, too. :D

Still, I missed Smackdown. They better come up with a damn good explaination for why this happened. :(

I got hit. No power for about 12 hours. Started around a little after 4pm. I didnt get power till 8am this morning. Around 6 or 7pm, I lost all reception to my cell. No internet, TV, nothing.

It was pretty hot yesterday. It was in the 90s..no fans, no ac. As for Bloomberg..the only way to hear the outside world, was with a battery operated battery or have your car running and listen to the radio (neighbors were doing that and blasted the radio so others can hear). Most are restored. I'm going to FL this afternoon (according to the airport, flights are on schedule) and I need a cut before I leave. I have power in my house as of 8 this morning, but my barber is like 3 blocks away and has no power. Go figure. Probably by 7-9pm everyone will have power.

Lost power for about 11 hours here. Got it back at 3am.

Not bothered a bit, though.

19+ hours of no power. Soon to be followed by rolling blackouts which may in fact kill this post if i dont get it finished in time...

Tried to BBQ our breakfast this morning, ran out of Propane. No cash in my wallet to get more at the few stores who were selling anything. Fun times.

Finally got out and went to the bank, nearly locked my keys in the car when i figured out the power was on for a short time. Ran into the bank and waited for the atms to boot only to find them saying they werent available for service. Left, came back about 2 minutes later and found them working, grabbed a wad of cash and left to find propane. All sold out in the city. (smaller city but come on). Drove around the rest of town trying to find a place to get some, the whole place seemed like it was out of Stephen Kings' The Stand or something, cars lined up out onto the street for gas, nothing else open, etc. Very strange day so far.

Well, signing off till my power comes on again...eventually.

Glad you're okay. I wondered why I didn't see you on AIM, and then I turned the T.V. channel and heard about the blackout, and put 2 an 2 together.

So, power was down from 4-2, and then at 9 this morning while watchign Family Guy, it went down again and just came back on. Fuckers. I expect it to go back down again too.

Havent experienced and other blackouts. O well, I wont be home to experience it as I'll be either on my way to or in Florida.

There I was....minding my own bizness in Rockafeller Center and reading some manga. Then It happened.....teh lights went out. First I thought that it would be a temporary thing. Then they evacuated the B&N I was in. I hung out for a while and then walked around for a bit. Then I heard over some guys radio that It was a city wide thing. I panicked a bit and called up a friend on a cell phone. It took a while but I got through. He was all like "sux 2 b3 j00" and I was all like "STFU yuo tile s7ea1in b30tch!!!!111!". :lol: Anyway, It was all chaos from that point. Or should I say I finaly realized the chaos. Dont believe what the broadcast would tell you. It wasnt all sunshine and lolipops. I tried to get onto an Express bus going back home but It was crazy. Practicaly every old lady & office secratary was trying to get on and I thought that these two old ladies that I saw were going to shank each other to get in front of each other. But for the most part It was cool. It was like one bigass exodus to get uptown. Some kind truck riders were letting people ride in their cargo areas. When I neared my home area I kind of got afraid of looting. My mom told me what It was like during the last big Blackout and I wasnt taking any chances.

Just then......stealth ghetto N1nj4 attack! I was all like "fools....tonight the shadows will hide your corpses...till the dawn." I picked up a lead pipe that was conviniently lying on the floor and kicked ass. The poor idiots did not know what hit them. I kicked one in the nutz and made him cry. Then I took one Ninja and used him to beat up the others. One of them tried to take my lucky mahjong tile that I kept on my keychain. Thats when It got personal. :lol:

........<ahem>. So after the Ninjas were dispached I snuck home under cover of darkness; occasionaly broken up by million megawat highbeams from approaching vehcles. When I got home I took a shower and listen to the radio and read "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" by candlelight. And thats when I knew I had a great adventure. THE END

I just sat outside and enjoyed the sun. I BBQ'd up some hotdogs and various goodies today and didn't really see the big hoopla. I mean hospitals and stuff rely on power but regular folk got a bit crazy.

Why do you need gas if there is no place to go?
Needless to say, it's back on but they have warned of rolling blackouts. So far I have had only 1 flicker of power off then back on since it came on but oh well.

At least my fan can work now, it's hot as hell up here.

for your area, theres probably no where to go, but where i am, power is back..with no rolling blackouts. so people are getting their gas. I need gas myself..only less than a 1/4 tank left, but im not waiting on the long ass lines. My sister went to the supermarket to pick up her last paycheck, and the place had no stuff that is refigerated.

Yeah. I was in the dark and it was pretty hot here without a fan. I just layed around and stuff, but I did that before the power outage. My excuse was that I was just trying to conserve energy because I knew someday this day would come.

Traffic is bogus and my fridge was melting, but other than that it's all good.

Is it that important to get gas and then drive right back home? Nothing is open and I understand in some cases people are going away to cottages or what not but still.... I'd just get up 15 minutes earlier the next day I have to work and get gas.

Yes, but some people need gas to get places. And most if not all places arent closed considering power is restored. Cottages? Uhh...I dont live in the boonies :D

I dunno... park it in my garage, I guess. When did your power come back on? My theory about it is that some guy fell asleep and accidentally knocked coffee on the controls, shorting out the grid.

Power went out again this afternoon, but only for an hour.

I heard some funny thing on the radio today about a group of idiots playing "cock-fighting" with glow-in-the-dark condoms. I dunno, maybe people either have too much time on their hands, or they've seen Skindeep one too many times.

Man, you could've done without posting that.

I'm in lower westchester, right above the Bronx, and my power went out at 4:15....and came on again at exactly 4:15 the next afternoon.......errie :eek: ...but anyway, it really sucked that a town right up the road and one right down the road had power early in the morning, but they couldn't turn it on here until much later....and I was in my 3rd floor apt. all night, and the heat sucked HARDCORE, it must have been over 100 degrees up there, I got maybe an hour of sleep....but other than that, it wasn't that bad...glad I didnt go to Manhattan that day.....

I feel bad for those either stuck on the train or stuck in the elevators. I would be tramatized if i was stuck on the elevator..not knowing what is going on.

Things where relatively minor in my area in Connecticut, power only went off for a very short time yesterday while I was at work... we lucked out :)

New York didn't fair so well, in fact a few of my coworkers were stranded at the New York office... they didn't get back till early this morning after sleeping outside for some of the night.

whats worse is..that it takes 6-8 hours for the tracks to warm up..imagine the mayhem for transportation

I live about 45 minutes from NYC, my power was out for about 4 hours. Grilled dinner outside, played with the dog and right when it started getting really hot inside, it kicked back in. Thank God. Living like we're on the frontier (with cars) sucks. By cable modem didn't kick back in until this morning though. After awhile, I was mostly concerned the the power would be back on in time for Freddy vs Jason. No problems though. Wait 10 damn years for it and I thought I'd have to wait another day. Fuck that shit.

shine: that episode of the twilight zone was EXACTLY what i was thinking when that blackout hit. i was waiting for the whole block to come out into the street and shoot the guy we sent out hours earlier for help. that would have fucking ruled.

i spent a lot of time playing CFC on the ngpc. well, that, listening to cds on my cd walkman and reading manga with a flashlight before i went to bed at i don't know what time.

I drank enough coffee to kill a small baby, and sat by my porch with my shotgun. Every so often, this group of sloshed assholes would walk by, ranting about the proper technique for sucking gas out of parked cars. Best drunk talk ever. Wish I had some blanks, it woulda been fun to scare the shit outta them.

23 hours and 55 minutes without electricity.

I sat out on my balcony and watched the stars in the sky. It was weird seeing them up there.

Mars was out, it was a clear day. :)

26 hours. Power came back around 6:45pm. God, I hate my neighborhood. It was fun to see Brooklyn without a single light on, though.

A few years back a hurricane (i'm in florida) knocked the power out for 8 days here. I live on an island of sorts, so this location has it's own sort of grid apart from everyone else. I remember hearing on the radio 2 days before the electric company came by that power was restored 100 percent through the county. It'd had been allright if I were a bumpkin, but I'm not not, I hate fishing. I spent the whole week reading a new issue of Next Generation over and over.

Thursday evening, I'm doing an inventory count at EB. I'm sitting next to the surge protectors, running through Xbox games (there were a ton of games missing!). It's about 4:05 and the surge protector emits this sharp, piercing light. The light was so caustic, so unexpected I jumped, then couldn't concentrate for the next couple of seconds. I say, "something fucked is going to happen" and the power goes out.

I spent the next hour sitting in the dark, debating with my cute co-worker about whose worse: men or women, and telling jerk-face jocks that I can't sell them Madden without registers and power to feed-them. When every other fucking store in the mall closed we realized something was awry. We got the news from the guys who worked in our sister store across the street that the power was out in Quebec, Ontario AND New York. My first reaction: 'Well there goes my fucking weekend.' I literally over-heard twenty people (strangers and such) lamenting the early closure of the beer stores. I was pissed about that too, but for another reason: I was supposed to go up to the cottage in an hour. There was no way my buddy was going to leave, I figured esp. with traffic at a veritable stand-still. And, uh, we couldn’t get beer.

I got home at about 6 and looked longingly at my sleeping bag. With my Turbo-Express TV tuner I discovered that the power was out in eight states and two provinces, and that it wasn't a terrorist attack/guy asleep at the controls/airplane crash/lightening strike in the power plant. I also discovered that my mom requires no electricity to nag.

I fucking hate SGGG for a couple of reasons, but I super hate him cuz the electricity came back in Montreal within a matter of hours as opposed to 23 hours in Toronto. While SGGG basked in cool, air-conditioned digs, I suffered through a mini-heat wave. Oh, and did I mention my mom was there, too? Yeah that fucking blowed.

7:00pm the phone rings. It's my buddy, and he's on his way back to Pickering from picking up his other buddy; the plans were still on. At 9 he calls back and says if the power doesn't come back before, let's say 3am, we can crash at his house. I agree, we jet.

10 - 1am we intermittently went out to the car, checking for potential gas station updates on the radio. My buddy explained that we faced a 2 1/2 hour a drive and had only a quarter tank of gas. Until the gas stations opened up, we were stuck in a powerless, hot hell-hole.

I'm not sure if you guys know this, but radio stations are pretty silly when the power’s down. Reputable hosts from reputable stations on reputable shows spent hours begging for cigs and beers from listeners and bitching and whining about manning the boards in “hot boxes.” Also, listeners tend to not listen at all. I'm not sure why, but people have this nagging tendency to call in and spew non-sequitous bull-shit, regardless of the shows topic. For instance, during the "who has power, where," show, slack-jawed hicks yielded to the urge to call in and declare, “nah, we don’t got na’ p’er durn her’ but we can see Mars tho’”!

We tired of Mars and “black-out babies,” names “BIHLL!” and retreated to my buddy’s basement. My buddy, Bryan, really wanted to go the cottage. He’d had a busy day, week and summer, and wanted nothing more than to chill out in front of a huge flickering fire, succumbing to the sweet embrace of drunken slumber once the 24 of Rickards Red ran out. Fuck, we all wanted that. And we’d been belly-aching about that for the last two hours.

Bryan was none to pleased about the piss-poor prospect of spending another night in civilization. He’d been pacing around his basement for about 10 minutes before pausing to thoughtfully rub his chin. He then sighed, leaned over one of the numerous candles, and, his face illuminated like he was about to digress into a lengthy camp-fire-esque scary story, burped, “FUCK! If only I filled up the tank before I got Kevin – like I planned on doing.”

Bryan’s sister, sprawled out on the sticky-icky leather couch in her jammies, muttered, “gas? Is that why you can’t go?”

“Well, the van’s only got a quarter of gas.”

“But, what about the Toyota? It’s topped off.”

I can’t describe the look that crept across Bryan’s face after that. It looked like he was either going to cry or kill someone, which I assumed would have been Kevin; Kevin laughed so hard he almost knocked over the candles. Before Bryan could say a word (I think it would have been “fuck”), I hustled him and Kevin out the drive-way so we could do a transfer of bags, beer and bullshit.

That was my black-out.

P.S. I was wondering about SGGG and Ice-pop. Did your plans get fucked over?

You poor babies! 20+ hours? That really isn't all that bad. In 96 a freakish ice storm hit Lake Charles & we were powerless for 4 days. We all stayed at different houses every night, all huddled in one room with lots of blankes, pot & whiskey. It was actually kind of fun.

Oh yeah? well back in my days we had a blackout for 6 days. And we couldnt afford any heat. We just sat around huddled together in the -10 degree weather! And we didnt have no stinkin sunlight either. The Kaizer stole it from us in Ninteen dikety two. We couldnt say the word twenty cause the Kaiser stole that from us too! I chased him Dickety three miles to get it back.......
