Many games these days are going multiplatform. I am making a huge list and will be submitting it to various places.
I would love any input you guys have.
For example, which system has the best version of:
The new Spiderman game
The new 007 game
That Batman game everybody hated
and so on.
And if the game is COMPLETELY different on two systems (like Aladin on Genesis and SNES) it doesn't count.
Only when its the SAME GAME on a different system.
Sega Saturn had the best version of Earthworm Jim 2.
I've been wanting to do this for a while, but including old games, too. Too much work, though. You'd need multiple impressions; you can't trust everyone.
I HATE the way all these games are being ported everywhere. I wish they were all exclusive to a system, and made to take advantage of said system's hardware. Ah well.
Don't know about the Batman game but 007 is the best on GC and Spiderman is the best on X-Box from what I hear.

Earthworm Jim on Sega CD, EWJ2 on the Saturn.

The PC version is better of every game that was first made on the PC then ported to consoles.
I don't understand this mentality. I NEVER once heard anyone complain about ports during the 16bit days. Ports allow those not fortunate enough to own every new system on the market the chance to play "Game X", and not be left out.Quote:

Yes, it allows the companies to make more money, but as you get a bonus of the game for not owning all systems, you also lose out on the game itself. Controls must be made to accomadate all systems; you cannot have the control scheme incorparate the analog stick buttons (the GC doesn't have them) and you can only use two trigger buttons (the PS2 is the only one with four). Graphics must be held down to work on all systems; Spider-Man runs at 60 fps on the XB, but is not graphically that much superior, but if they had taken true advantage of the XB making a version just for it they could have really pumped up poly counts.Quote:

This is what's happening to Soul Calibur 2 right now (I believe this was also stated in an interview with them), where the game simply doesn't look as good as it should because they have to make sure it looks good on all systems. So far, all we've heard is it mainly being a graphics thing, but it can go deeper then that, especially if the control scheme gets affected.
I personally never complained about ports in the 16-bit days because 1.) I usually didn't know better, and 2.) if I had a copy for one system I felt no need to get it for another, so no comparasion happened. Remember, the internet was not a huge force back then, games largely had to be discovered by oneself with only minimal help from print magazines, today, everything is spoiled by widespread BBS, Gamefaqs (though I still love them), and sites (including previews telling you everything about almost every game) all over, accessible by everyone even through local libraries.

That sounds cool! I should've been more specific... I hate immediate or near-immediate ports. Now, if the game's been around long enough to be a classic, and they bring it back on a new system, then that usually does warrant a purchase, and I'm OK with it. I just don't want 2 mediocre and one good version of a game floating around, just so "everyone can play." Like, say, Shadowman, any Capcom fighting game (except SFA3, that's amazingly good there), and so on.Quote:

If its a 2D Capcom fighter, its better version was the Saturn one, not the Playstation version. I'm guessing many 3D games on the PS that got ported to the Saturn were better on the PS.

No, but really, games should be designed for specific systems from the ground up... they all work in very different ways, and for a developer to limit the potential of a game so it can be more compatible is bull plop.
When you buy a system, you make an informed choice. If you can't afford them all, you buy the one you think will offer you the most. You'll never play EVERY game released for EVERY system. And you know what? You'll live! And then, someday, when you grow up, you can buy whatever system it was you couldn't afford for $30.00 or so, and, if you have the time and inclination, play all those games you missed back when you didn't have a real job. It happened to me, it'll happen to kids everywhere for years to come. Such is life. Hell, it's happening to me right now, since I don't have an Xbox. Would I be happy if Sega butchered JSRF and crammed it into the PS2? No, not really.

Wolfenstein 3D best on 3DO. Get the updated graphics from the Jaguar re-make along with CD-quality sound.
Street Fighter II (all versions) better on Super Nintendo than Genesis. (deal with it Sega fanboys)

In the old days, since arcade hardware was so much different from the home systems, there weren't all that many ports. Most were pretty different games. But, for those that were close (Kung Fu, Shinobi, Rampage, Galaga, DK, etc.) then I fully approve of a home version, since not too many own arcade boards and the knowledge to play them. I'm not THAT Nazi about games, expecting them to ONLY be available in the arcades. Just make sure that when you port them, you either bring in the proper hardware necessary (light guns, arcade sticks), or you leave them alone. Ugh, I hate playing gun games or fighting games with a stock pad (like Silent Scope). And I hate playing VF4 on the PS2 controller. It funks me up, especially if I tried to do things I do at home in the arcade. No 2-button-presses shoulder buttons over there.Quote:

Nowadays, most of the new systems have sister arcade hardware, anyway (STV-1, Naomi, Triforce *drool*, etc.), so ports from those to their respective console are generally painless and get the Mzo seal of approval. Then there are exceptions like Soul Calibur, which just kicks the arcade version's ass all over the place.
I dunno, despite my BS answer up there, I was talking about console games. Arcade games are a different beast, and I think most are made with the mindset of being ported from the get-go, anyway. Although the same can be said of some console games. Whatever.
Ports chafe my buns too. Just go all out and make it all you can make it, I say. What's the point of different systems if they all play the same games?

Yes, Bare Knuckle 3 is better than Streets of Rage 3 because you can fight and use Ash, who was not included in the Politically Correct domestic version.
Rocket Knight Adventures and Dynamite Headdy are also superior in their MD incarnations than their Genny versions.

Dynamite Headdy, as you said, is freaking IMPOSSIBLE in the U.S. version.
See, the problem isn't porting, but lazy porting. It's fine and dandy that publishers want to increase their market threefold on a title, but they often want to do so *without spending any more time or effort*. I have to admit I don't know much about optimizing a game in terms of framerates and etc., but I do find it ridiculous that ports to *more powerful* console wind up worse because a developer doesn't take the time to smooth things out. Control schemes are a pet peeve of mine - every controller has at least 4 face buttons, 2 analog triggers, 2 analog sticks and a d-pad. Yet so many ports have broken control schemes - like SSX Tricky, where the R2 button was mapped to Z and a trigger was mapped out, all because the developer didn't improvise with the multitude of face buttons it could have used.Quote:

X-COM UFO - PC (PSX load times are unforgivable)
Civilization 1&2 - PC (the console ports never di them justice)
SF Alpha/Zero 3 - Sat (import)
RE: Code Veronica - PS2 (the extras and steve's hair put it over the DC one)
Mortal Kombat 2 - 32X (still the only MK I've ever liked and since there wasn't any load times it beats out the Sat version)
16-bit EA sports games - Genny
Tecmo Super Bowl - SNES
Final Fight - Sega CD

Gekirindan: The F3 arcade version kicks Virgin's brutalized Saturn port to the curb.
DonPachi: It's better on the PSone.
Layer Section II: Better on PSone (Unsurprising, since the Taito FX-1 is the PlayStation hardware for the most part.)

I don't know if this fits the category of this thread? The US version of Sonic the Hedgehog was said to be missing some of the parallax effects seen in the Japanese Mega-Drive version of the game.
Saturn's version of Rayman was the best (sharper graphix faster/responsive controls what gamefan said)
MDK2 is better on DC
Test Drive Lemans is better on DC
Rayman 2 is better on DC
Sonic adv2 is better on GC
Crash 4 is better on Xbox
