Dragon Warrior I is one of those ancient rpgs I'd say holds up well, if you can get into the lack of story, battle strategy, etc. It's got a couple of tough puzzles (ah, the stones of sunlight), a really charming soundtrack, world and set of characters, but mostly it's one of the best progressing and laid out rpgs I've ever played. I've probably finished it 3 or 4 times over the years. Of course, it is pretty spartan in this day & age, so I can understand why people wouldn't get into it.
