KOTOR bugs

My KOTOR keeps crashing at the Taris undercity, specifically when the Rakghouls attack this guy outside the village and the elder doesn't want to open the gates to let him in, in case the Rakghouls get inside also. If I choose to attack the Rakghouls, the game crashes 2 seconds into combat mode (or as soon as I hit one of them), if I let the guy die, the game crashes just before the Rakghoul owns him (I have no idea how they kill their prey). I have no idea how to get around this, it crashes whatever I try.

Why can't western devs test/optimise their shit properly? :rolleyes: This is a great game but when people end up doing 30kb bugs FAQs (which doesn't cover my problem) and the framerate is so stuttery, you know the game needed more development time.

Three reasons: 1) Bioware is used to working on PC games, where testing can be an afterthought because of patches. 2) Most Western RPGs are a bitch to test properly in the first place, because there are so many possibilities (although KotOR isn't nearly as non-linear as something like Morrowind, so the bugs are much less forgivable). 3) It was quite obviously rushed out the door early.

Yep, still no excuse really. The least I expect from a game is that it works, KOTOR utterly fails in that regard. If Microsoft are going to rush out flagship games like this, they should actively encourage patching, that way at least there is a remedy, regardless of how lazy it may be. I hate it when a totally awesome game like this is plagued by bugs.

I haven't had the game crash on me yet, and I'm about 20 hours in (cross fingers).

I exchanged some guys KOTOR for the third time. I'm saddened by this - I had no problems.

Perhaps thats what the downloadable content is for :) But like most XBOXLive games, there probably won't ever be any (coughmidtownmadnesscough).

Same here, I never encountered a single glitch. Went through just fine for me and started a second game which also didn't have any problems.

Is there a demo disc out there with the downloadable content on it?

I'm going to try turning my machine into an American one then turning off my modchip, that might solve it but I doubt it.

Ironically enough, EGM has an article in their latest issue where they highlight some big name releases that are riddled with bugs, like Enter the Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. Of course, there are no mentions of the plethora of glitches/bugs in GTA: Vice City (which coincidentally received all perfect scores from their review crew) or KOTOR, MS' big release this summer.

The article would've been a great opportunity to show readers that even top tier developers like Rockstar and Bioware aren't immune to these problems, and it'd help people realize just how much of a problem these glitches and bugs are becoming. It's sad really.

I agree. The game needed much more extensive testing. I don't see why it would have been so bad to have the game out in time for Christmas. There isn't much coming out for Xbox in Q4 anyway.

From what I understand Microsoft doesn't allow patching at all, which is ridiculous. So far they've had two Western RPGs on the system, and both have been chock full of bugs. Maybe when Fable hits and is also glitchy as hell, they'll change their tune on patches.
