Fzero GX vs. Soul Calibur 2

They were born on the same day and they're both great, but there can be only one..............

Which do you think is the better game and why? I personally have to say FZero GX because this game is just rocking my world relentlessly. I never expected anything like this from the game, it's blown away all my expectations (and I'm an Fzero fan). Soul Calibur 2 is lots of fun but every time I play it feels like I'm playing a port of what I was playing Christmas 99'.

I haven't put my finger on it yet, but there's just something special about Fzero GX that I haven't felt from a game in a LONG time. The game sucks me in, beats me up with it's unrelenting difficulty, and yet not even a faint spark of frustration results. Unbelievable. Fortunately I own both games so I don't have to make the cruel choice with my wallet, but if I did......sorry SC2 but the soul doesn't burn anymore, it hauls ass at 1500 mph with goofy homemade decals pasted on it.

yeah, um...if i could only choose one, i'd just flip a coin. they're just way too different to be able to pick one over the other and be okay with it.

Klonoa: here are the key questions A) Do you have friends that will play tons of Soul Calibur 2 with you? B) Did you play the hell out of Soul Calibur 1 to the point where you are burnt out on it? C) Do you like racing games?

FZero GX is the greatest racing game ever made with a fantastic 1 player mode, tons of replay value, as well as a great multiplayer mode. Soul Calibur 2 is Soul Calibur 1.5, with slightly improved graphics and sound, Link, and a mission mode similar to SC1's only this time you unlock variations on weapons for each character as well as characters and arenas. They're both great, but I'd say if you've played a lot of Soul Calibur 1 and have interest in Fzero then get Fzero immediately, it's first priority. It will blow you away and dominate your life. Soul Calibur 2 will give you pangs of regret over where your 50 bucks went if it prevented you from buying Fzero.

I've been having fun with FZero so far, but greatest racing game ever? I'm beginning to think people put too much stock in a game as a default if it has the Sega name flash across the screen...

I played SC2 in the arcade.

I didn't play F-Zero in the arcade.

I bought F-Zero on release day.

I'll buy SC2 in a few weeks.

Actually, I think I'm going to buy Ikaruga since the local stores seem to have finally gotten it in stock.

But given the choices, I WOULD have said Soul Calibur 2 yesterday. SpoDaddy and Kidnemo make a strong argument in favor of FZero though, I think I'd have to rent that first and see if I like it as much as everyone else seems to.

After playing the Soul Calibur 2 demo yesterday, I just came away feeling like "This is EXACTLY like Soul Calibur 1" which in and of itself isn't bad, but I just don't know how long it will hold my interest since I played SC1 so much a while back I got completely burned out on it.

Why do you even bother to make these threads if you're so absolutely biased in the first place? I think you just got proven wrong in your "Is SC2 the sequel it should be" thread, so you need to set up some other thread to prove its inferiority. -even when the setup is totally without merit.

"FZero GX is the greatest racing game ever made"? -Wow, that's objective. I like how a valid strategy is just to swerve back and forth, because the wonky physics engine will reward that with acceleration. The game is based more on twitch reflexes than mastery of your vehicles handling properties, which can be cool, but certainly doesn't appeal to everyone. For my money, no one has beat the physics and feel of the Wipeout series

I voted for Soul Caliber 2 because I enjoy fighting more then flying down tracks. Quite simple.

I've purchased both on their release day, and they've had equal playing time. Hell, even my friends coming over to play have a hard time deciding which one gets popped into my GC.

Um...one's a racing game and one's a fighting game. I don't see the comparison.

I guess you can't really rate them comparitively. You can only say which one you personally enjoy more.

But the question is which one would you take if you had to choose. I'd choose Soul Caliber 2.

If its a question of one game over another it would be incredibly tough for me to choose. I also bought them both when they came out and I've been playing F-Zero GX a bit more due to it being more challenging and me coming back for more. I didn't have much expectations for it, just going by the nice screens and all but it turned out to be a fun as hell racer. For me, I still think Waverace Blue Storm tops it because the techniques are more advanced and for other reasons. That may change with further F-Zero play though.

On one hand I've been anticipating SC2 for a good while now so I would have bought that first especially after pre-ordering it for the art book/litho.

On the other, replay wise after playing it, F-Zero is the winner because of all the cool unlockable stuff in there along with the difficulty and the multi.

It's the best having both. When you get tired of one, you pop in another high quality (but different genre) game. My Cube hasn't seen this much action in a long time.

I would say that F-Zero GX is definitely the better racing game, but Soul Calibur 2 has the edge when it comes to fighting.

The problem here is balance. After all, no one in SC2 can outrun the Ta-Ta girls (Taki and Talim), while the limited movelists in F-Zero GX are all sorts of wack.

I'm just attempting to give these hotly competing games a fair and balanced comparison. As I was saying, F-Zero GX shits all over Soul Calibur 2 when it comes to high-speed cornering, but SC2's 8-Way Run system profers it an edge when it comes to things like strategic throw avoidance and setting up for ring-outs.

It should also be pointed out that those looking to perform a Summon Suffering will want to go with SC2. F-Zero GX does not have an equivalent maneuver, though its turbo-boosts and speed arrows are fun in their own way. It depends what you're looking for.

There are some Action Replay/Gameshark codes for the Japanese version that help this situation a bit. I don't know if they work on the US version, though. You can find them here.

If I could only have one it would be SC2. Theres just more depth and longetivity in it than F-Zero. And racing ALWAYS gets old faster than a multiplayer fighter. IMO.

That's not the point of the thread, the point is to see what my fellow gamers feel is the better game all around. Games don't have to be in the same genre to be compared in terms of fun, quality and longevity.

Does anyone else feel this way? The reasons given didn't make much sense to me. I guess you can't see the loss in acceleration too well, since super-fucking-fast barely looks different from super-fast, but you can really tell when 15 or so cars blaze past you.
Try the game out, play in expert mode, and tell me you don't need to know how your car handles or how to best run the tracks in order to even place, let alone win.

Between the two: if you're gonna have constant competition from friends, then SC2 first. If not, F-Zero first. Eventually get both. Then buy the other 2 SC2 versions of the game when they reach the $20.00 range.

Your amount of fun will first be based on what genre you prefer and then whether or not you have friends that enjoy the same genre. The quality is near equal. Which one you play for longer also depends on whether or not you have friends that enjoy the same genre.

It's more circumstance then game quality, so no, the comparision doesn't work.

Andrew: I wasn't "complaining" at all, I welcome opinions different from my own (it's why I started the thread in the first place, to get other points of view). I simply went into detail on how I feel about the games for Klonoa because he wanted advice on which one to buy. I haven't critisized anybody's opinion on either game, they're both great and I can understand why anyone would like one more than the other. My opinion comes from the fact that I played Soul Calibur 1 to death on Dreamcast, and SC2 is too similar to it for my tastes. Of course similar to something great isn't a bad thing, just means it doesn't feel as deserving of my money as something like Fzero GX, which addresses every issue I had with Fzero X on N64 (no car creation mode, weak unlockables and an "unlock everything" code). I played Fzero X to death, and Fzero GX feels like a completely new game to me. Anyone that feels I'm not giving SC2 enough credit, feel free to speak your mind.

Anywho, I'd say that Soul Calibur 2 has taken up a couple of hours multiplayer wise while F-Zero has been eating up late night solo game time.

Well to further add I think while SC2 definitely has more depth due to its system of play, F-Zero is the better single player due mostly to challenge and mastery of the courses.

The A.I. racers can get pretty rowdy but jumping and aligning your ship just right with the track while at the same time heading off the opposition, banking, bumping off other vehicles, managing your shared turbo/energy, trying to stay on track all factor in for a crazy ride.

They both have a ton of stuff to unlock and all but I don't have too many people around to play SC2 much let alone letting them play by themselves to get the nuances of the game. Again I love them both but due to the nature of the games and the GC in need of quality racers makes F-Zero GX more deserving of my attention right now.

I went ahead and decided to buy F Zero GX over SC2 (heh, one of the hardest purchasing decisions I've made in awhile). The only reason I had for this was that I wanted something completely fresh (I don't have any high tech futuristic racers, so F-zero seemed like a nice place to start). I've played some of SC2 when my friend brought over the Xbox version the other day. And while I can definitely see a lot of improvements (more moves, buyable weapons, several new characters, better graphics, new locations, higher difficulty in getting a ring out), it DOES still play extremely similair to the first SC in almost every way. That doesn't make it bad or anything. Its just that I could wait longer for SC2, BECAUSE its so similair to the original SC. I'm very glad I purchased F Zero first. Its sucked up my hours and my life in the three days I've had it like nothing else has in months (I assume Zelda WW was the last game I played this much, and that was 5 months ago). I would say go with F Zero first, you won't be dissapointed. Unless of course you never played SC, in which case one should definitely snatch SC2 up first. I still plan to get SC2 next weekend though, it looks amazing as well.

They pack a 2-for-1 punch in giving GC owners 2 great games to play after the summer drought.

While I would actually liked for him to have done an official VF Evo vs SC2 thread(someone start one fast!), I don't mind this thread and I think its unfair to flame him on just trying to start new conversation between games.

Yes they will. One doesn't substitute for the other in any possible way. If you have a GameCube, you should buy F-Zero. If you like fighting games, you will also buy Soul Calibur 2 on your system of choice.

Well I still think this topic is legit. I know I would have liked this topic to be up before I chose which one to buy first. And I know of plenty other people who ARE just planning on buying one, simply because they can't afford to buy both any time soon.

I think to understand this thread, you have to see through the eyes of someone who only has a Gamecube. The easiest way to do this is to be arrested in Rwanda, since that's what they have instead of prison there.

As for SC2 being "too similar", I'd say that Street Fighter 3:Third Strike is just like Street Fighter 2, since all it has are new characters, moves, graphics, backgrounds, modes, and a refined engine.

As far as this thread goes, I think it's pretty obvious that Chessmaster 2000 is the best racing game of all time, even though I was dissappointed that it didn't add any new moves or tracks over Chessmaster '99.

If the thread were "Which is the better game, Fzero GX or War Gods?" would some of you dullards be able to actually answer the question? It's really not that tough a question. Which game do you prefer and why? As TaekwondoNJ pointed out, a lot of people are having a difficult time picking which one to buy that can't afford to drop $100 just because 2 great games came out on the same day.

Sould Calibur2 for me. 2 reasons: I dont like racing games much, and SC2 is quite fun to play against dj.

I might rent Fzero someday, but its not a real priority.
