Internet troubles

So I d/ced my router to play Madden online, and tons of problems have now evolved. I put my router back afterwards, and I couldn't get any access to the internet. Disconnected it again to see if I could get access without it, and had full access. Tried some stuff, and put my router back; nothing doing. Disconnected it again, and had access to Mozilla and AIM, but not MSN and IE as well as some other websites. Now I've got the router back up, and again no MSN/IE etc. I've reset everything on my router, and found out the problem that was allowing me NO access to anything via the router. (DHPC wasn't assigning IPs)
So now I ask you all, what could be the problem not allowing me access to MSN, IE, etc.?

I would have sent an email to Microsoft, seeing as how its their services, but I can't access their website.

And have you tried resetting your router? How is your home network set up? Why didn't you just route a ethernet cable from one of the routers outputs to your console? Have you tried kicking it?

I've reset the router multiple times, and I've even restored it to factory settings.
The setup is normal, modem to router to 2 PCs. I disconnected it because I was playing Madden on the PC, and didn't want to bother opening up the ports to get online in Madden.

Microsoft is getting hammered today , so any service they have such as msn/messenger etc. will be up and down...

If someone knows proxy settings, please help!
My LAN settings are set to automatically detect configuration on top, and I've got 'use a proxy server' marked, with nothing filled in the address and port fields. Bypass proxy settings for local addresses is also selected.

This is a real shot-in-the-dark, but try using 192.168.0.1 as a proxy server.

You're not supposed to be using a proxy unless you have some crazy ISP or you have a network admin who set it up like that. However, I assume you're using SBC/Verizon/Earthlink and it's your home network.

The first step in troubleshooting a problem like this is checking to see if the router is getting an IP from the service provider. You said you did this and it is not getting one. Who makes the router? With most router/hub models out there, the option to reset the defaults often does NOT reset to defaults. This is especially common with Linksys products.

If you're not getting an IP from the service provider, the next step is to hook your computer directly to the cable/dsl modem and see if it can connect with the proper software (PPPoE, etc).

If you do get an IP from the service provider, then you have something set up improperly in the router. Generic setup for DSL would be PPPoE, putting in the DNS numbers, no other options set up, and making sure that the router is set to NAT. Generic setup for cable modem would be obtain IP automatically, no other options set up, and making sure that the router is set to either NAT or sharing a range of IPs (depending on your provider).

One thing to try would be dialing in and seeing if your router has a firmware upgrade available.

The only other explanation is the result of those viruses going off and accessing Microsoft's stuff.

a friend aimed me with a question regarding MSN messenger service being down as it gives em a error message about being behind a firewall - like the one above. I dont really know whats going on b/c mine is working fine but is this msn problem on their end or the user end?

If you have Microsoft for your dsl provider i wouldnt be surprised if that was also..
