Morality of game playing

Actually, I watched a UFC once, and this one guy put the other in an armbar. How did his opponent get out of it? Simple- by punching the guy in the balls about 10 times in a row. The ref allowed it, and the guy went on to win the match shortly thereafter. Hey, it worked. :) That was from a few years ago...I don't know if that's allowed anymore.

1) Morality has no place in gaming, as you state it. Do you think that Thresh, the man who beat unholy ass at Quake 2 and was untochable (apparently winning a Ferrari from ID), felt 'immoral' for playing a 12 year old, and subsequently losing one on one? Doubtful.

Fighting games are like any competition, I assume that anyone I play against wants to see how relatively good I play, so I play as good as I can.

2) I wish I lived in this wild west mythical world you have. Where, in a fight, it's one on one, with rules, and the chance for me to get jumped by 6 guys and beaten until I went blind is not there.

I seriously hope that you never get into a fight.

Personally, I enjoy trash-talking, especially when I suck at the game. If I'm going to be destroyed I might as well have fun with it.

Another fun street-fighting 'trick' is when you lose your weapon, tell the other person to drop theirs and 'fight like a man'. I used that one in Akira when I lost my gun in a fight with Tetsuo...heh, who walked away from that one?

I'm not stating some definition of "gaming morality"...simply asking if such a thing exists. Everybody's got their own definition of morality and I was just asking if, or why it seems, that no most people I've run into don't have any game-playing scruples. For instance, some Guilty Gear X tournaments banned the faultless defense counter and some tourneys banned the infinites. Someone must have thought these tactics were "wrong", despite being part of the game. Also, I didn't mean to limit the discussion to fighting games, either...some guys might have a problem with people choosing to continue in any game rather than playing through on one credit.

There weren't any rules in my fights, either...just a lack of those 6 guys who will jump the loser...or maybe those were MY friends at the time...it just never came to that for me.

Ditto. If a kid comes up and plays, I assume he wants to try and beat what I have to offer. If he can't, too bad - it's just a quarter. It's not so much cutthroat, but more like not candy-coating the kid's experience.

And truth be told, there are some 12-16 year olds who would beat down people in their 20's-30's in a game of SF or KoF. So I don't assume a kid means an easy win. That's why you always play at your best.

I live in that mythical world. Or, I pretend to. Or, I act as though I do, even though no one else seems to. Most people that "fight" are cowards. I tire of hearing grand fight stories of "I caught this fool from behind" and the like.

I tire of hearing people say they're not being cowards and "have to" do it like that for their own sake. Though at least people on this site appear to be aware of their weakness.

Videogames. yeah. I limit myself too much to have to worry about being nice to someone. I don't use heavy combos or SDMs, so even if I'm better than someone, It takes me a little longer to finish them off. Which gives them a chance. Unless they get smart, then I pull of some ungodly chain(just once) to finish them off quicker.

I don't go looking for fights, nor does it make me a 'man' to get in them.

Rezo, you get surrounded and attacked by 6 people, and see what you do. Again, I hope you never get in that situation, it would change your view, along with others, on 'street fighting' dramatically.

It did not change my view on street fighting,as I said,
most street fighters are cowards. I am aware of this. I
look at things as how they should be, I don't care for
how screwed up they actually are, nor do I use that as an excuse
for myself.


Here's a basic rule of mine: Personal risk/gain shouldn't affect
my views.

If 6 people jump me, I will be aware of the fact that I am
getting jumped by six people. I won't go against any ideal I
have to help myself,and I haven't, and if I do, I consider it a
mistake. It has nothing to do with being a "man". Its just doing
things the way they should be done.I honestly don't think I come
off as a fighter in any stretch of the word, and was only in a few.

I have the fortune of not caring what happens to me. Misfortune, who
knows.

You guys suck. If some kid without much of a clue comes up and challenges you, it takes way more skill to toy with him, try dodging what he throws at you and string him along, trying to pull off crazy shit you'd never try on a better opponent than to just robotically go through your corner trap routine.

If some clueless shotoklone challenges me at SF3, that's parry practice (although I'll still make it look like I'm trying). He feels good because he didn't completely waste a quarter, and my play time lasts longer. If I trounce a guy in 15 seconds, I'm not having any fun either. When he can get past my "mess with him" tactics, then there's a point in busting out the real stuff, not before. Wailing on someone without as much practice at the game as you doesn't make you a tough guy, just a bully.

As for "street fighting", as a guy taking Karate and who took Jiu Jitsu and knows far too many ways to snap a joint or inflict serious nerve pain (seriously, they start teaching you that stuff in white belt), if six guys jump you, all bets are off. But if it's one or two drunk assholes you know you can handle, taking cheap shots or trying to do permanent damage makes you a weak person.

I don't care if you think that's some fantasy land crap, I and centuries of far more accomplished martial artists than myself disagree with you. At the end of the day, resorting to thug tactics just makes you a thug.
