Castlevania: Whips Vs. Swords

I just finished playing Aria of Sorrow, and am now starting to play Harmony of Dissonance and I'm having to re-adjust to using a whip again. It's like when I played Symphony of the Night and then Circle of the Moon- it's not a big deal, but there's just a little something I prefer about using a sword in the Castlevania games. The reaction time seems a tad faster. I could understand if they modeled the gameplay in the newer games that use the whip to take advantage of the whip's unique features when it comes to platforming and stuff (like they did in 4, where you could use it to swing over pits), but they don't. The sword is just a better, faster, and more fun weapon to use, at least to me. Plus, it makes me feel a bit more bad-ass. :D

The fact that they use a whip in the upcoming Lament of Innocence could be cool, however, since a multi-directional whip seems more effective in a 3D fighting environment than perhaps a sword would be.

So, which do you prefer? Whip, sword, or perhaps a new weapon, like the gun Soma finds in Aria of Sorrow?

Cool topic D :) Most of the main heroes in CV series utilize whips as their weapons, with only Alucard and Soma being able to use the variety of different weapons. What whips usually have over swords it the distance of the attack, since you can attack from further away, and with swords, you get to be close to your target. But then, swords are usually much more powerful.

I personally prefer swords, and being able to use all kinds of different weapons, then to be just to rely on one whip.

Plus you can find a Ivy like chain(whip) sword for Soma in AOS to use :)

I went with whip, but a Castlevania with a choice of both would be the best. Throw in a choice of a gun too.

For some reason I've always had this stereotipical vision concerning the whip. I always saw it in the hands of a woman, this may be due to playing too much FFIV as a boy.

Since CastleVania usually (I don't know if any of the games differ) have a male character, I'd say swords. But I considered the question in general not just CV, so I don't care.

I guess it's how you use it, like dolemite said, if it's included in the gameplay it's cool. Whips can be used in a more varying way than a sword, so it depends on who is using it.

Super Castlevania 4 let you whip in all 8 directions in the air, too.

My first Castlevania experiance was Simons Quest so I have to go with whips. I remember it took me forever to get the flame whip as a kid.

I was a Genesis kid, I've onlyed played Castlevania 4 a few times in my life.

What about the last sword that Soma finds, the Claimh Solais? That thing was huge, with easily the same range, if not more, as a whip. Plus that super-wide arc it swung in made it easy to hit just about anything. I love that sword.

Agree, That sword had exreme range, and fast swing too. That powerful spear(damn, I forgot the name), had a great range as well, but you only attacked in the straigh motion forward.

Ah, yeah, that's the Ronginus' Spear. Good thing I have the GBA handy to check these weapon names... :)

This is a tough call.

It took Indiana Jones to bring whips out of the sole mindshare of dominatrixes and horse drawn carraiges. It really is functional as a tool and a weapon. But not nearly as cool as the telescoping golden banana picker, especially when giant monkey mecha are concerned.

Nonetheless, nothing feels quite as cool as a long cold steel razor sharp sword in your hand. Swinging those things makes you feel one hundred feet tall the moment you take the handle.

Modified Sword Chucks could be the best of both worlds.

For castlevania, whips, for me, werewolf claws!:D Rip drac apart up close and personal,maybe a good upgrade of the second castelvania game for the gc? with the werewolf is in order? Seriously, the whips seemed weird to me at first,but since I played through all the nes ones, the whips are part of the mythos, and it was jarring to go to various weapons in sotn. they worked obviously, but sotn was so good that he could have been using a petunia,and i would have not cared. for the human slayers though, the whips are needed .

Castlevania

game from being phased out of nature on a genetic defect are either the miracles of modern medicine, or that god hates all that is good and makes sense.
