Buy a pack of gum at walmart for $.21 and use a check. Makle that check for $20.21 and pocket the $20. use that $20 for foo, gas, whatever you want. That's called "kiting."
Best of luck, Despair. I'm sure you'll land on your feet soon.
Have you looked into the higher education market? Are there any colleges/Universities near you? There are a lot of technology jobs emerging in this field and the jobs are fairly secure...I work for a University and the money being spent towards technology is astounding...
Well at least now, maybe I'll be able to catch up to your movie collection...
Seriously though, good luck...
Not to be rude, but be glad you've managed to keep your job this long.
Welcome to the land of the laid off programmers/consultants/IT professionals. It's a crowded world and it's only going to get worse, unless of course you live in India. Send out those resumes, so they can sit in piles of 50 hoping to stand out. Respond to those job postings for positions that end up getting cut during the interview process. Build a reataionship with those wonderful head hunters who don't really have any jobs. It's been 1.5 years of hell for me, hopefully things improve for you more quickly.
Oh yeah, don't expect any help, plan of action, or acknowledgement of a problem from your federal goverment. After all, the tax cuts fixed everything right?
I'm pretty sure that your employer has to pay into the unemployment benefits for every paycheck you get while you're working there. Once you're unemployed, then, you're just drawing from money that's already there. A completely different case if you go into federal unemployment, tho.Quote:

It's tough out there folks.
Figures. I have the time of my life in college, and I graduate right on time to the worst god damn job market since the shit hit the fan in the mid 80's. With Regan as president if iirc.
Despair, I just wanted to add a "good luck man" to the list. I have a family too & I would be freaking out if I lost my job. I wish you the best of luck.
BTW, how did the wife take it?
JM
Well, She was upset and cried a little, but it could have been much worse. She said that I should have told her the news earlier in the day, but I knew better, to wait till evening, otherwise we both would have been mess.
She is still very upset, but I am trying to keep her spirits up, and I spent most of the day working and fixing up my new resume, while she already riled up all of her co-workers to help us with task of proofreading, advices and recomendations & references.
We went through bunch of job related websites, and found few adds that seem rather interesting, so we will try our luck, by sending my resume to them, and see what happens.
Also went to shop for a new suit. Cant really go to the interview with my old one, which I honestly havent used in 4 years. While it might be some more money out of out pocket, it needs to be done, plus we always can return it on later date.
