I have to admit, that box art is pretty terrible. Not only is it creepy, but the artist took it upon himself to create a realistic, thoughtful pose with rakishly coifed hair before realizing...oh, yes, that's right...it's a damn clown.

I agree with the dissenting opinion. The art here is well-executed... it's just the subject matter that's screwy. This has nothing on the worst Capcom pieces, which truly offend the discriminating gamer's eye.

That Clown game is called Minton-Keibu no Sousa File: Doukeshi Satsujin Jiken, which translates to "Inspector Minton's Investigation File: Case of the Homicidal Clown". Sounds like fun for the entire family. :D
Anyway, I was actually thinking of starting a similar thread like this. The worst cover art I've seen has to be the US Toshinden for the PlayStation. Other than that, there are several bad cover arts in game that I don't where to begin. The US version of Dr. Mario has a really bad cover art. The viruses were drawn like ugly trolls for no reason whatsoever and Mario himself looks like he's suffering from down syndrome. The Japanese version is so much better. Just look and compare.

Well I've always been a big fan of Darius Gaiden's US cover art. I want to walk out in the middle of the street during a rainstorm, drop to my knees, and scream "IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FRIGGIN GAME WHATSOEVER!!!".

There's actually a rather amusing backstory regarding this artwork and the changed title screen. When Game Freak and Hudson Soft were discussing for the US version of the game, one of the staff member drew the artwork and jokingly suggested "in America, even cute characters are drawn realistically, like this". Apparently they took his advice seriously.

@ Firstblood - While hardly the worst cover art I've seen, I will say I am rather unhappy with the new RE cover art as well. I haven't bothered looking it up, but how does the import artwork hold up?
As for that Bomberman artwork.... Blah! I snagged a copy off ebay a while back, and while I knew what I was getting into with the terrible cover art, the day it arrived, it almost brought a tear to my eye. Poor poor Bomberman should have never been done that way.

Heh, that Dondokodon cover not only doesn't look bad, it looks great! I love that plastic troll thing.:) I also like the "Popey Mario". I just miss Mario's old school early 80's look I guess.
My absolute favorite covers are the ones that miss the point of the game entirely. I still can't get over Bomberman. River City Ransom misses the point by such a large margin that it's scary. It's not even bad art (unlike the Bomberman cover), it's just way, way off the mark with the feel of the game. Why were we "protected" from superdeformed and cartoony characters on our boxes in the 80's anyway? Especially when the in-game sprites were squishy and cute.

Anyway, the only reason why game companies didn't used the original Japanese cover arts in the American versions of their games is probably due to the fact that putting anime artwork in game covers was considered evil for some reason or another back then.
