As for the industry crash, I don't think we'll see one in the classic sense. People like games, it's human nature, if anything we'll see an evolution to something many will seperate from current videogames. I guess then you could shout "industry crash".

It could actually happen. Flood the market with too many products, or have too much of a drop in quality, or both and you have the potential for a crash. The companies that would suffer from this would probably not end up being console manufacturors since most of them are huge and do things other than games, and Nintendo's already preparing. A lot of third parties may potentially disappear though.

A crash is not guaranteed to happen, but the possibility is still in the air.

I can only hope a crash will come.

Maybe then this mainstreamness, movies, sequels, electronic monopolies, and 3-D garbage will go away.

Nintendo knows whats its doing, its sad when the two most popular sytems are run by companies that dont even make their games.

And don't give me Grand Turismo bullshite, cause that game is not made by Sony, its made by Philophany digital or whatever its called.

Nintendo is the ONLY game console developer that makes their own games.

Microsoft makes their own.

As for a crash though. I wouldn't want one. What about the smaller devs. that make great games but don't get the sales the big fish do. The would really be hurt.

Polyphony Digital was originally an internal Sony developer, who was then spun off into their own company.

Nintendo's way of operating worked when video games were a relatively small, self-contained business that didn't involve all that much competition. The status quo was all that mattered. You are forgetting two very important things:

1. Nintendo is the largest game publisher in the world, by far, and has been for a very long time.
2. It seems each year they post record profits. 2001 they earned around $800 million

In doing what they do(making games) there is little room for growth. Nintendo is still growing, albeit slowly, but there isn't much room for growth with the way the industry is now. Sure, nintendo would be happy with sony's hardwale sales, and sony would kill for nintendo's software sales, but neither of them can have both at this time. perhaps nintendo is saving that money for when they see an opportunity to strike

hopefully the crash will change a few things, and then smaller developers will have a chance to grow and profit.

I think the crash is bound to happen in the next 10 years. I know thats a broad estimate, but i think its accurate. And if there isn't a crash, then the market will still be totally changed from how we know it. it all depends on how sony and microsoft manage to turn videogames into a multimedia market.

If the market collapsed you could say goodbye to many great games. The Tomb Raiders won't be the only ones to go, anything with a sizeable budget would too. The current market allows for those niche "hardcore" titles, and the big stuff wich is often good. How can you call yourself a gamer and hope for less choice?

Oh and both MS and Sony have their own development studios.

Microsoft's plan:

Short term: Game system
Medium term: Set top box
Long term: PC Appliance

Sony's plan:

Short term: Game system/ Set top box/ PC/ PC Appliance

Take your pick.
