Hmm... I really want to play it (and I shall) before I get too judgemental. But screw it, I'll say a few things.

The camera looks like it could get pretty frusterating at times. Doesn't look like you get much (any?) control over it. Hope it won't matter too much.

Gameplay does indeed look just like DMC, minus all the Resident Evil adventure game elements (thank god... that would have been one step too far). I don't know if you're overpowered in that demo or not, but jesus... could Leon have any more over-the-top magic spells at his disposal? I hope you earn a lot of that over time. Seems pretty un-Vania-like to me. Use your whip more!

Music, from what I can hear, sounds pretty cool. I expected as much. Won't comment on graphics, over than the framerate which looks silky smooth (not the biggest deal these days, but worth noting nonetheless).

High hopes remain for this one.

Damn, That looks kickass.

I loved it. Looks much better than those first initial screens. Monsters actually look very nice. Those huge Skeleton Snakeheads or whatever they are were very impressive.

I loved those powerups. Homing Knife shot. Very cool huge Cross powerup. The explosive Ice/Holy water? It seems that you will be able to use those powerups with different level of power. With cross attack you can see 3 different attacks.

I also enjoyed the music.

Now I am very excited about this game. October 28th will have 2 cool things, New CV and return of 24 :p Yeah !!!

Yea... sure is a nice package they're getting Dolemite. But hey, I figure if we at least get the soundtrack CD, that's a huge step in the right direction for us U.S. gamers.

I hope they include the soundtrack CD here in the USA, they did it for Silent Hill 3 so hopefully they will do it with this as well :)

I already paid off my reserve copy of Castlevania: Lament Of Innocence in full. I am absolutely thrilled about this game, being a huge Castlevania fan (SotN is my favorite game ever!) and I believe that regardless of this game being in 3D in which some people have criticized, this will be one hell of a game. I just hope they have a decent amount of platforming elements and some vertically based rooms.

Damn! This is one of my must own games this fall, but I can't get the vid to work! I'm getting sound, but no picture. Can anyone help? I'm using MP 6.4 with Windows 98. I downloaded the Xivd codec and installed it. I installed divx 3.11 and divx 412 awhile back though and maybe that is causing a problem.

Fuck ya'll! I download quicktime and it runs nicely. Wow this is looking very nice indeed. I don't get where this "shitty camera" is coming from. It's zoomed out so far it doesn't have a chance to be shitty. Anyways, I haven't played it myself, but it looks great and I'm keeping a positive attitude that this is going to be a great "3D" Castlevania.

Something that springs to mind after watching the video: do you lock-on to enemies?

Has anyone here actually played the demo? I've got one coming from Japan, should be here by the end of the week. Should I get my hopes up? Thanks to shipping it ended up costing me more than I'd like to admit, but I guess it is worth it. On the plus side, there are a few other demos on the disc I wanted to try out such as the new Maximo and Gregory Horror Show.

Looks as if there will be eight areas instead of just five and that Dracula may not be the main antagonist in the game after all (though I think the reviewer has forgotten Iga's penchant for multiple endings and didn't do something correct to reach Dracula...)

Why is it that EVERY SINGLE FUCKING VIDEO I download requires some type of software upgrade? Every single goddamn time.

This month OPM reviewed it and gave it 4 stars. They said that the fighting and action in the game was nicely done, and camera almost never was a problem. The only thing they complained about that some of the backtracking might be too repetetive.

Hope he's playable after you beat him or get inevitable true ending by (like you said) beating Dracula.

Wouldn't be much of an opening saga if the first Belmont didn't even fight Dracula at the end...

I was skeptical of how this would turn out after how disasterous the N64 ones were, but the video has me more hyped for it than ever :)

I just hope that I can find that new model PS2 before it comes out in a few weeks. It'd suck not being able to play it from day 1 :(

A) I agree wholeheartedly with your first paragraph. I was disappointed after E3, but now things look peachy.

B) When IS the new PS2 revision coming out? I know that the first sets that included the BBA contained the original model.. I thought surely the 'new' PS2 would be available already, but no luck. :o

No, it's not Mathias according to the article. It's someone I've never heard of - maybe a vampire that predates Dracula. Apparently this vampire lord is the guy we've been seeing with the long red hair and black and red armor.

Ahh... well that's cool then. That guy with the red hair who I thought was supposed to be Dracula (before they later released artwork of Drac, looking much different) looked pretty gimpy. Sounds like the story is going to be a lot better than I first expected... really can't wait for this (thanks for the cool news Darkweaver).

P.S. I still maintain that Mathias will turn evil and you will turn him un-evil over the course of the game. And he'll be playable character #2 ;)

Speaking of LOI, have you guys seen the TGS video? I was willing to give Konami the benefit of the doubt but in the video the guy is using secondary area attacks/shields over 90% of the time. He uses the whip maybe 3 times in four minutes. It looks to me like the essential problem from Castlevania 64 - that a whip doesn't work in 3D - hasn't been solved in the least. That's part of the reason that LOD on the N64 was so much better than the first - they got rid of the Belmost and put in Cornell who attacked with his hands/paws which actually works in a 3D game. Either way, so far I'm of the impression that Konami really missed the boat on this one; they should have stuck to the Contra SS 2.5D

Okay, some of mine are: is there platforming? Vertical rooms (i.e. rooms where you have to keep going up and up or descending further down) and how good is the combat in 3D?

Ok, general impressions. First off, the demo is short, with two different routes to the boss, a stone golem. It lasts at most between 5 and 10 minutes. To best describe the game would be to call it "Castlevania May Cry" because frankly, that is what it is. I've not seen any of the videos on the net so I can't really compare, sorry.

There was ZERO platforming in the demo. The camera is fixed ala DMC which could lead to some annoying falls I imagine. But the demo is pretty much grounded. No pits, no nothing. The only time you leave the ground floor is at the start of them demo where you can jump to a balcony to collect some hearts. That was the extent of the platforming. So, as far as the demo goes, no verticak rooms. That doesn't rule them out for the main game though. As I said, the demo is very short, and I imagine a very small sampling of the main game.

One aspect of the game I really liked is a sort of quick menu system. Using the right analog stick you can bring up the item menu while you are still playing the game. So, rather than pause the game to down a potion, all to have to do is move the analog stick left, choose a potion and hit the A button. You can also switch equipment among other things via this method. It really keeps the action going and avoids frequent pauses.

The whip works as best it can in 3D. You have a weak attack (Square) and strong attack(Triangle). You can mix them up for a few different combo attacks similar to Rygar in some ways. In fact I'd say the whip is reminescent of a stiffer diskarmor.

I'm not too fond of the sub weapons. In the demo I found the dagger, the cross and a crystal. You can use standard versions of the subweapons or modify them with orbs. In the demo you get two orbs, red and blue. I am unaware of any lock on button so aiming the dagger can be tedious, especially due to the fixed camera angles. For some reason, the cross is no longer a boomerang, it is now a shield, similar to Wood Man's weapon from Mega Man 2. Three crosses cricle around your body causing damage to anything that touches you. I would've rather them kept the boomerang style cross, though I imagine that would be hard to aim as well. The crystal leaves a crystal where you were standing that blows up after a few seconds. If you have an orb equipped the sub weapon will be modified. For example, with the blue orb equipped, using the Cross will perform the classic magic attack.

Overall, I'd say the game is ok, based on the demo version. This is a demo after all and the full game is bound to be better. While I still would've prefered a 2D version, what we are getting doesn't suck. If the main game features a lot more platforming and stages are longer than what is present here, I'll be quite happy. The combat could be btter, but it could be worse too. Take Devil May Cry, mix in a little Rygar and add some Castlevania touches like breakable lamps and you've got LOI. One thing is for sure, it's a hell of a lot better than Castlevania 64. Oh yeah, the music is nice too. Not sure if I'd say it's on par with SOTN, but it kicks ass nonetheless.

Great to hear that its like DMC, which means I will love it :) Good to hear that Whip mechanics work well. If Tecmo could do it well in Rygar, I am sure that Konami can do it in CV.

As for Knife power up, wasnt one charge being Homing stream of knifes that follows the targets? It worked like that in the video we seen.

That sounds like the cross, not the boomerang.

In past games the cross would go around you shield style too.

No problem. Yes, one of the powered up versions of the dagger is homing. It's just a pain in the ass to aim the standard dagger.

Really? Damn, my memory must be shot. I could've sworn you always threw the cross, I don't recall it ever being used as a shield. I think they changed the name to boomerang in the Us versions but I'm pretty sure you threw the cross. I feel like a fool now.

However, I am unsure that the subweapon in LOI is indeed the same as the cross. I'll have to fire the demo up again and check to be sure. I knew I wasn't remembering wrong.

EDIT #2 - Just finished playing the demo a couple more times. Aiming the dagger isn't as bad as I thought. As long as you are pointing in the general direction, the dagger will hit a target. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Not sure if I mentioned this, but there are pools of blood. I was wondering why this got an M rating, but after seeing the enemies turn into rivers of blood when they are killed I can understand. As far as the cross goes, I was wrong. It isn't actually the classic cross but another sub weapon altogether. A crucifix. Attached is a very blurry pic.

So in SotN when you play as Ricther, you get the boomerang (you throw it and it comes back), and the cross (lots of hearts, woodman type effect), it's also like that in a few of the GBA 'vania games too (CotM I believe).

Does the demo allow you to access the map or monster encyclopedias? Also, I take it the X button is to jump then. Double tap it and you double jump perhaps?

I like the idea that you use the buttons to whip rather than the analog stick. If I recall, in the new Rygar you had to use the analog stick to control his diskarmor thing and I prefer my weapons with the touch of a button.

I think either the demo is shortened or the Golem is just a sub-boss of that level. It's cool that there were two different routes to him though which means a less linear castle and the less linear, the more I like.

That was just to twirl enemies, you still attacked with the buttons.

Attacking is strictly with the buttons. You cannot alter your whip with the analog stick. Though, there may be a skill in the final game that allows you to. As Mechdeus said, the only time you used the analog stick in Rygar was to twirl enemies.

Jump is indeed performed with the X button and a double tap performs a double jump. Just noticed I forgot to mention that they added a block button. I'm not sure if I like this addition, but we'll see. Holding R1 makes Leon go into a blocking pose. You can block some attacks this way, but it obviously won't help you against big attacks, such as the golem's swinging fist. If you press jump while holding in block Leon will Kick Step. The Kick Step makes Leon perform a short dash/scoot in the direction you are holding. This skill works wonders for avoiding some attacks and is pretty much required during the only "puzzle" present in this demo unless you want to take damage.

The "puzzle" I am referring to isn't really a puzzle. It is a room with three statues. Large boulders drop from the ceiling and hit the ground wherever you stand. So, what you do is stand in front of a statue and when the boulders nears you, just hold guard and press jump. Leon will scoot out of the boulders way. The boulder will then smash the statue. Smash all of the statues to unlock the door and continue.

Another skill present is the Perfect Guard. I'm not sure how to do it, nor what it does. I think it is dependent on your timing and it may sap some MP.

You cannot access the Encylopedia or the map in the demo. At least, I have not found a way to access the map. The start button brings up the main menu and select brings up a quit screen. I'd assume it's just not present. I really hope the Golem was only a sub boss, or maybe that this is a training level. Time will tell.

After explaining the control setup, I can see it's going to be quick with no time to getting used to. Thus, the simple controls already make it seem to me as if this will be a fast, smooth game and I'm really happy about it. I simply cannot wait any longer for this game!

Some people might hate me for saying this. But I loved (and I mean loved) the 64 Castlevania games, so I've been waiting for this for a long time.
In fact I was really upset when they canceled the Dreamcast game.

I don't think anyone will hate you for saying that, but I know I will question your judgement about games from now on ;)

(They weren't bad (umm... mostly), they just weren't up to the Castlevania name I think)

Agreed, DMC didn't flick my switch, but the light seems to be on and burning brightly for the masses. I got tired with killing the same thing over and over... and basicallly always in the same way.

There may very well be some platforming in the main game. The demo I played was only a small section. Don't write the game off yet. It definitely feels like a mix of Rygar and DMC though.

Yes it could quite possibly be the best demo ever with all the stuff inside. Castlevania should be out by then though.

Keres - sadly no. Even I was dissapointed with DMC2. It had few good moments, but overal it was dissapointing.

While browsing the internet aimlessly before my day begins, I checked to see what EB had to say about Castlevania.

It says something about a free soundtrack sampler for those who preorder. I really hope that isn't the case... the soundtrack had better be packed in with the game. Follow the link if you'd like to:

If not, you have to download it. This shows some really awesome gameplay elements as well as some of the cutscenes. The game has actually exceeded my expectations after watching it - I'm even more hyped for it than before! Check out the scene too with Leon inside what looks like an organic, pulsating room battling a beating heart. And there does seem to be quite a bit of platforming as well. Ah man, this game is going to be sweet!

Oh yes, and it has been confirmed that Castlevania: Lament Of Innocence will be shipped on the 21st at EB and Gamestop (I asked my Gamestop too) and should be in by the 22nd this month.

(Note the video is approximately 22 MB and may require you to download DivX).

It really looks like Konami isn't packing in the soundtrack for the U.S. release from what I can gather. And that sucks. A week early or not, that sucks.

I just saw the vid Darkweaver posted, still looks very nice although you can tell it was done in english first.

This, Viewtiful Joe and Z.O.E 2nd Runner could be my favorite action games of the year.

Will, where'd you get that logo for the game? I was trying to find a good image of it to use as a signature for a while but to no avail. It's good stuff.

I did a search on google for 'Castlevania LOI logos' and a site had it and I just used it as my own. If you want you can incorporate it into your sig too, just right click it get the properties and put it in the [img] code since I'm hosting it.

Spike I can host 20MB worth of one's you think are worthwhile if you don't mind sending them via AIM or something. Someone with more webspace should host these...

I have the 13 Lament of Innocence tracks and they come out to 30MB. The 3 Aria of Sorrow tracks are 10MB. I haven't ripped the Symphony of the Night tracks.

I just signed up to aim, so I can send some to you NoFace, and to Shin Johnpv.

Does anyone want the Aria of Sorrow and Syphony of Night ones?
