It comes from Io Interactive, the guys who brought us the Hitman games. Freedom fighters maintains the somewhat awkward third person viewpoint as Hitman, although I think in this game it's slightly less annoying.
Much like hitman, the game is based around a series of missions as you take part in a group of freedom-fighters after Russia takes over the US. You are given mission breifings from a sewer base, which tell you where to go on the map.
The first mission involves rescuing a member of your group from the Russians from a police station. You emerge from a manhole cover in an ally. As you make your way out onto the street, you see a group of Police officers behind an overturned squad car. They tell you they've been pinned down by snipers and that you need to go blow up the gas station behind them to knock them out. So you return to the manhole, and make your way to the gas station, plant C4 on the tanks, and blow the snipers away. You now have a safe entryway to the police station.
I think the game also focuses on squad-based combat, as in the second mission you are given two helpers to infiltrate a Russian base. The game has a "charisma" system, where you gain charisma by doing good deeds (healing wounded soldiers, etc), and the more charisma you have, the more soldiers you can command. The squad-combat seems pretty basic though, as there are only three commands: Regroup, Attack, and Defend.
I'm having a lot of fun with the game. Now that I think about it, it place much like Hitman, but if Hitman were a straight up action game. I'd recommend it to everyone but Despair (what with all the Russian-killin' ;) )
