Well, I do agree that the game is not pretty :), especially being on Xbox. Control scheme is also not very user friendly (or at least blocking option on Left Analog? WTF? :(
Combat was somewhat fun though, and the story interesting. But I definately not going to praise it as many here do. I might someday comeback to finish it.

It's like playing as the main character to an action movie, and by "playing as" I mean they try to take the you-as-a-person to a level higher then most games try to instead of making it a typical action game. All the added animations, movements, views, and so on are done not for the standard game experience but to help draw you in. If you've already convinced yourself it's bad you'll probably hate the actual game because it takes a while to get used to and feels really clunky in the beginning. The expanded powers, knocking people down hallways, and story execution are all great, again, it's designed to be an experience more then a standard videogame.
You'll probably hate playing it (which I figured you had already had, considering your comment earlier in the thread). Just pass.
The main draws to the game are probably the first person hand to hand combat and the story. If you don't like these two things, you're probably not going to like the game. The game also pulls some neat tricks that help with the immersion factor.Quote:

It has both, hard-core. I saw all sorts of different parts of the game, and every single one was ugly as hell. Low-res, ugly, flat, boring, repetitive textures and levels that SERIOUSLY looked worse than some PSone games. Even on DC Soul Reaver's getting damned ugly these days, those boss textures especially were amazingly hideous last time I played. I question the quality of the TV you're playing on if CTR and SR compare to Breakdown (haven't played Colin McRae so I can't comment, but I doubt any 3D PS graphical prowess these days).Quote:

Oh yes, and in regards to immersiveness the surround sound is also beautiful 99% of the time. I'm not sure if Half-Life supports that as well, and Breakdown does have the slight problem of a couple voice clips from important conversations that only use the front speakers no matter what direction you're facing. Those screwups are very rare though, that only happens like twice in the whole game.

Wait for the price drop, or get it used. Or even better, give it a rent before buying it to make sure that you will actually like it.
The only real trait they share is first-person melee. Maken X had the great novelty of choose-your-own-adventure that Breakdown lacks, but the story here is also far superior in the first place.Quote:

I liked going back to the past and replaying stuff as a more powerful Derrick. I didn't like, however, the part they choose you to replay. The super jump if anything made the platforming more difficult.
The final boss was cool; it was freaky to see that orb flying around when you quickly turned to look behind you. I think Mech you were saying how you didn't like the white room because it was too videogamish but I disagree. The Nexus had two last ditch efforts to save itself. The first was a physical challenge and to that end the white room spawned a seemingly endless army to combat Derrick. Once it became clear that his defeat wasn't going to happen, the next attempt was to attack Derrick mentally, which led to the next scenes. Did you notice how there was this horrible buzz whenever you moved? It made me want to stay still just to avoid it, which would have been the goal of the mental attack. Since Derrick had become too strong physically, the Nexus wanted to break him emotionally and mentally, to force him to give up. Even after breaking apart the globe, when you awake back in the real world it almost seems a dream, the cracked sky and the gently floating white orbs. It takes a solid effort to climb the bridge and come to trust your senses again, after all that has happened.
The ending ruled, and while the "bad" ending could be considered silly, it was so important for it to be there. I would imagine that everyone playing would run to Alex, but the fact that it was a voluntary action just makes it feel so much more... immersive, if we haven't already beaten that word to death.
I also loved how the game followed the standard three act structure, even in gameplay. The first being defined by the gaining of new powers and the hallucinations that (you are led to believe) come about because of your inability to handle them. By act two you’ve hopefully become accustomed to the controls, much as Derrick has gained an understanding of his powers. The “gimmicky” stuff seems to fade away, and the game opens up to more standard you vs. the world gameplay stuff. Then of course act three; you wake up and realize the true battle awaits.
As an added bonus, everyone will have their own favorite act. The EGM review for example said the game really opened up in the second half, so I guess they didn’t really like the constantly changing goals of act 1. I feel that that was some of the very best content, but I could totally understand what would make them think that. There’s plenty more to gush about but I’ve written too much already. Fantastic game.
Well I finished it last night as well and loved it. Awesome game, the only problem I have as I walk away with it is the fact that sometimes if you died you had to re-watch scripted events instead of being able to skip them if you saw them already. It's a very minor problem considering.
I also did swear a few times at the end but ultimately if you come to a problem area just know that the more you try the better you get and you will pass it. Great game.

Per the "get it for $19.99 at Target" tip, I'm now the proud owner of my very own copy of Breakdown...
Played it for about an hour and a half, and so far I really enjoy it! While some of the stuff lacks polish, the main characters hands sometimes dissapear instead of moving off screen, the main character moves wonky when you can see him, it still seems pretty good.
I love the weird effects that have happened so far, gives it a kinda "Ring" feel.
I started on normal instead of easy and...
The two t'lan? warriors that you fight in the 15th floor that is on fire whupped me like six or seven times in a row, weakness.
Was time for a break anyways I suppose.
Other than the little issues I mentioned above it seems very solid so far.

Beat it on normal, a game has to really kick my ass in order for to play on easy (like Steel Battalion and the battleship, which made me start over).
I actually considered replaying it on easy without using lock on. I thought that might balance out and make for an interesting change. Ultimately though I shelved it and moved on to some unfinished games.

Beat the game last night. I really enjoyed myself despite some repetitive levels, frustratingly hard parts and some ugly textures. The Solus fight is a lot of fun and I replay it just to try out combos. A survival horror game based on Breakdown's gameplay would be amazing. A punchout style fighter would also be fun. I don't think this did so well so a sequel seems unlikely but I hope there is one.
Just got the "t'lan upgrade" from prof. glenn. Seems like the game is starting to pick up a lot more. I haven't had problems like I did with the two t'lan guys by the fire, though a couple of the rooms with five or six soliders were crappy annoying.
Still the good times fo'sho.
I wish the sucker didn't LOOK at everything he picked up though!

When you get the super T'lan juice, the one that falls in the grate. The flying uppercut you do to get out was such a great feeling. I was hoping you'd be super powerful, like be able to fly around the room and toss lightning. Oh well.
Noticed something funny last night an the elevator going down to site zero. Apologies if this has been mentioned before.
The elevator will stop and go dark. When Alex says to hurry up and get out of here, don't press the elevator button. Instead, look at her and access her. You can "honk the horn" so to speak. She will then yell at you. Yeah, no big deal, but I thought it was funny.

When you encounter Solus in the A, B & C valve rooms (by they way, I almost crapped when I first spun around and saw him), is it even possible to beat him? I got into some VERY protracted brawls, but seemingly to no avail. So, of course, I eventually went with cowardice and just ran like hell. Damn, if that wasn't tense and unnerving. Anyway, I assume you can't beat actually beat him at that location, but I'd like some confirmation for when I play through the game again.
I'm finding this game to be very compelling. And while I liked it well enough during the first couple of hours, it only really starts taking off at what I assume to be about 1/3 of the way into the game. Namco did a fine job of keeping the tension level cranked WAY up...much more tense than Ninja Gaiden, even if it lacks the visual flair.
Prince: It can't be done. I didn't even know you could leave that office room for the first fifteen or twenty minutes I was in there, but was good enough that I was able to fight that long. Once I realized I was getting nowhere and it was probably rigged to be impossible, I started running and eventually figured out what I was supposed to be doing.
Thanks, Mech. That's what I figured. Have you gone back through any of the harder difficulties? The game on Normal has a couple of very tough spots, so I'm wondering how much more they can actually throw at you. Of course, knowing all of the puzzles and the sequence of events probably makes things a bit more manageable.
Not yet. I'm currently finishing up P.N.03 (never got the Papillion) and once I'm done with that I'll finish my second time with Breakdown on Normal and then probably jump over Hard and right to Extreme just to see if they can pull off John Romero's ad campaign.
I so wish Breakdown didn't give me motion sickness - the worst since Medal of Honor on the PS1, in fact. Even with the Target deal, I rented because I was concerned this would happen. Oh well.
I really like this game, but this is the most frustrating game I have played in a long time. I have been stuck three times already and I have only been playing about three hours. I don't have much experience with FPS though, the only other one I ever beat was Halo. The story seems pretty cool so far--those big monster guys are pretty hard to beat. If there is more than one of them at a time I pretty much get my ass kicked! The guy with the white hair (his name escapes me right now) is awesome, I like when I first fought him he was just throwing me all over the place. I hope I get some more powers soon!

There are certain parts that stump you for a little while but just treat it like a puzzle game. This makes the game pretty easy.

I really don't see how some (not necessarily on this board) have called this an 8 or 10 hour game. I'm guessing that the game clock will read about 15 hours by the time I've finished, which can't possibly account for all of the re-tries on certain levels. I think my final hour count was at about 13 hours when I was finished, but like you said, didn't include all the retrys.
I just looked through the move list, I had no idea there was that many different moves/combos. 90% of the time I used the L, L, R combo, and the uppercut.
If the game didn't make me freaking insane I'd like to play it to see all the other moves.
I've spent a fair amount of time just trying out various moves, particularly in the 10-15 minute Solus fight. There is an impressive amount of moves, and some of them are seriously bad-ass [e.g. -- left hook-right hook-left hook-right upper cut, and the hook-low kick-flying kick]. But in the middle of a panicked fight, it's hard not to resort to the basics.Quote:

All true. But I would strongly recommend printing out the extensive move list on page 6 of this thread. The game is grueling enough that you may never play it twice, so you'll want to try out all of the combos on your first run. Some of them are extremely effective.Quote:

I know they said something about it not evolving there, and they thought it was some type of caretaker, but thats about all I remember seeing.

The part of this game before I was able to fight back against the T'lans made me want to throw this game out and forget I ever had anything to do with it.
That said, since I got past there, so many fucking ridiculously stupid things have happened and yet I keep playing. It feels like one of those "die until you don't" games where trial and error is the only way to do anything, and even then, it doesn't always work. Like when I had to grab the inside of that elevator? I got beaten down 3 times before I could get it to work right. Whee. Now I'm trying to successfully fight in fire without accidently burning myself to death, because apparently crawling around on the ground causes smoke inhalation and makes you die.

Where you're running down that area, shutting off all the water valves while Solus chases you. I got to open the final door and he killed me mid-animation.

And Slip, you're really close, what I suggest:
After you have all the valves open, don't go to the door right away, do one more full "lap" to make sure that Solus is a good distance behind you, then go for the door.
If you two think the parts that you're stuck on now are bad...it only gets worse. :D
Kidnemo is correct, but I noticed that there's a definite limit as to how much "room" you can put between yourself and Solus no matter how many extra laps you run. Believe me, I tried it more than a few times. Make sure your health is full (one of the benefits of dying, actually), and RUN LIKE HELL. You CANNOT SLOW DOWN! This means (1) smoothly ducking/jumping all of the laser mines -- shooting them takes too long; (2) having appropriate weapons readied and FULLY LOADED in advance -- run at the single guard while shooting him in the face -- take out the group of 3 guards with one shot from your rocket launcher. Solus still catches up to you here and there, but ignore him, dodge his energy shots and keep running. He'll still hit you at the very end (incredibly unnerving), but the one or two shots won't kill you if you've done all of the above.Quote:

I'm trying. I'm really trying. But I'm still stuck fighting those two guys in the burning building. Now, I appreciate a good challenge, but this is just downright masochistic. No matter what I do, they surround me, either because of the clunky control or what, but I can't get away, I either end up in the middle of fire, or being charged by both of them at the same time.
I want to play more of this game but not if it's going to be more of this. I want to like this game but I don't think it's going to work.

i just ran past the hall where they were and let them follow. i didnt use the lock on. i just picked the closest one and started bashing away, when he went down i went at the other one, then repeat untill dead. a couple of good combos and some blocking and you should be all set.
i pass them in like 2-3 tries. they can give you a real good pummeling in short order if you dont take them out though.
it is a challenging game though. lots and lots of deaths and continues are part of the process. good luck.

I think between yesterday and today, I'm nearing 20 tries, if not there already. Yeah, I'm blocking plenty, but you can't always be guarding, and clicking the stick down to guard is definitely kind of awkward. The first one I attack usually I get locked on to, and the time he falls, the second one is usually attacking me before I'm done with a combo. Actually, I think that was Namcos intention, as it's trying to be a combat "simulator" almost. What I mean is irl it's much easier to fight one opponent, fighting more than one attacker gets much more difficult.Quote:

If you're where I think you are, then you don't actually have to fight those guys. In fact, after finally beating them (yes, it took me a gazillion tries as well) and realizing what I was supposed to do there, I suspect that Namco didn't intend for the player to defeat those two T'lan even though the solution is far from intuitive. Check this thread (page 4 or so?) or the Gamefaqs walkthrough for the the solution, get past that stupid part, and start enjoying the game.Quote:

Awesome. After a bit of running like hell, I was able to progress, and I've played another hour or so past that point, and I'm really enjoying the game a lot. Thanks, Prince Planet. I'm glad I didn't get (too) discouraged because it seems like there's a lot more fun to be had, and the action movie feel is going to only get better. That scene with the ledges outside was pretty slick, and the helicopter getting blown up on the roof and the ensuing shootout was awesome. Blocking bullets also makes hand to hand combat twice as awesome. :D
Ha! Good for you! It's a shame that some people gave up after the potentially frustrating (and not especially exciting) early parts of the game. Though, she did make an excellent decoy when fighting the second group of two T'lans. Kept one busy while I pummeled the other one.

Almost died, but it felt pretty good when I finally accomplished it. I still never killed the two T'lans in the fire, but after I was told what I was supposed to be getting in that area, I had no problem running away from them.
I never had a problem with the guns. Crouch and hide behind a wall, pop out, shoot, and then duck back. Wait for them to finish their round of attack, pop back out and fire a few more shots. Repeat.Quote:

The biggest problem with the game is the insanely wonky gunplay. There's nothing that can be done about skillfully shooting some of these guys down. Many times, I just ran through a room and hoped I'd make it out with a sliver of life.
The gratifying part was making it out of a certain scenario after 25 retries. The part that wasn't gratifying was having to retry certain scenarios ad nauseam. I swear, this game made me really fucking angry like nothing else. I have no idea why or how anyone could play this game on a difficulty level higher than normal, because there is no particular skill that'll get you through it. The ammo is limited, the soldiers take lots of abuse, and they all flank you.
Anyway, I beat it. I just thought the gunplay was terribly unbalanced and destroyed a good portion of the game for me. There were parts I could not see myself getting past. I just couldn't. I'd open a door and soldiers would shoot at me, reducing my health bar by half, before I could even move Derrick anywhere. You don't understand how insanely frustrating this game is. It's like nothing else. I swear.
The good thing is, I kind of enjoyed the melee combat. Pretty innovative, IMO, and I can't wait to see how Riddick implements its own first person fighting engine.

heh. glad you got passed that point grave. its a very enjoyable game with some very frustrating spots. but well worth the play through.
those first 2 T'lan are very killable though. i didnt realize that they could even be avoided. but it wasnt a problem since i killed them after a few tries.
speaking of ammo. one of the coolest things about this game is combining the hand to hand and gunplay together. it is incredibly rewarding to run at a soilder, slide tackle him and then pump a few rounds with the 45. into him at point blank range. very fun!
auto-center usually screws me all up in an FPS. like going around corners trying to strafe. i dunno, it just dosent seem to work for me.Quote:

Oh, I thought it was one of the best gameplay experiences ever. I just found it incredibly frustrating and flawed.
Just when I think I'm at the end it starts me over in some different part of the level. This gets really annoying. I just beat the main guy at least I think he is, then I got to what I thought was nexus and I guess died only to come back at the very beginning of the game where everything looks trippy and have no powers, so I keep getting killed by some guards. Edit: I went back and played through a lot of this game again. Why? Because it rocks so damn hard. Story, atmosphere, bizarre levels, 1st person movement/combos, and overall "freaky factor" just strike me as incredibly impressive. This will be one of my GsOTY without question.
I started another game from scratch (still too much a wimp to try Expert). Damn, there are A LOT of little details I missed or forgot about when fighting for my life -- dialogue hints, scenery details, etc.
I absolutely slaughtered those two T'lan in the fire -- one try. Bastards.
A cool scene I forgot about: when you're on the ledge outside the science center, you look way down on the courtyard and see teeny tiny T'lan butchering teeny tiny soliders. Neat.
An hour and a half got me to the Botanical Center, so I'm guessing that a complete run, still looking at all of the "reports," will take about 7-8 hours. Not bad.
You are a braver man than me.
