Frankly, I think I'm just looking for an excuse to get an iPhone.
iPhone is dope, there's your excuse.
AT&T isnt that bad but in certain areas, reception sucks. GSM and iDEN (Nextel), I have barely any service. I have to go outside or near a window. With Verizon, I was able to get service without a problem. I live in Queens.
I work in Garden City/Westbury and in our cafeteria, I have minimal service but enough to hear and talk to someone clearly and receive data. Coworkers have AT&T and they get no service unless they walk away from table and go near window.
A couple of my friends have Spring/AT&T and when we're in the basement of my friends house, they have no service where as Verizon has no problem.
You pay extra but you avoid the frustration and aggravation from not having service. I have a Blackberry and have no problems doing what I want to do and install whatever I want to install. The same would be with Droid.
The iPhone is great in DFW, but it's ass here (Sioux Falls, SD) because of no 3G. AT&T can sue all they want, but the truth is that their 3G coverage is limited to major cities. Also I can't imagine how bad data would be in NY.
pricey yes, but jesus people....they don't block ANYTHING. Some of the dumbphones are, for the lack of a better term, dumbed down, and none of them run java. But any BB, WinMo and Android device is wide freaking open. Hell, they are now even requiring WiFi on all new smartphone devices before they approve them...
I can get a Palm Pre for $150 or an HTC Hero for $180 through Sprint. I've read reviews on both, have played a little with the Palm Pre (and liked it), but if anyone has any better insight I'd love to hear it before I make a dumb choice.
The pre hardware is crap. A guy I know went through 2 of them, then gave up and got an iphone.
I don't think either phone is a dumb choice. Android's got more developer support right now, but Palm just announced that they'll be on Verizon and AT&T soon and I expect developer support to pick up significantly. Still doubt it will match Android any time soon, as Android is everywhere, especially outside of the phone market.
Play with the phones extensively in a store and see which you'd prefer to use on a daily basis. IMO, the Pre has the best form factor and interface of any smart phone.
I've got two of them (mine and fiancee's) and the hardware is perfectly fine. I know two other people with Pres that haven't had hardware issues. What problems did your friend have?
