Pretty retarded. I mean, there is obviously a strong bias against the man to begin with and hell, I could have wrote that and I have not read the book.
I think CP is vastly overrated. Fight Club was a great movie... but the book was kinda pretentious and not that great. There really only are 2 movies which I thought were better than the books, and that is Forrest Gump and Fight Club.
Of course, Salon.com is pretentious and not that great either. But I cant read the entire review without subscribing, and Im definitely not gonna do that - Tyler, did you read the whole thing?
I'm with Diffusion. Fight Club was a far better flick than novel. Hell, as a movie it's one of my favorites, but I never finished, or even bought (I was reading a frien'ds copy), the book. It's the main reason I didn't catch the movie until nearly two years after it's release, when my love for Norton made me cave in.
I haven't read Diary, and don't plan to I'm afraid, but it's not like this guy is some sort of literary god.
I read the whole article on the Salon.com Day Pass thing.
It gives several instances of the book contradicting itself, being repetitive, and showing incredibly lousy research skills (for instance, in two different books he refers to Athena and Apollo as the Greek god of love, neither of which are accurate. Athena is a war goddess!). It's brutal, but it's well-deserved if his writing is really as sloppy as the article says.
If all these accusations are true (I don't see why they wouldn't be, but I have no intentions of reading any of his books so I don't know for sure), then this book may very well be a slipshod mess or at the very least spottily written).
Yeah, I used the Day Pass. It's an option that's kind of hidden on the bottom of the screen, and you have to go through an annoying ad before you get to the article, but you do get to read the entire thing.Quote:

I just think that this review is really cruel - it's like she has some personal vendetta against the guy. Palahniuk isn't a literary god by any means but there are a lot of other writers who deserve a good thrashing more than him. I just think it was uncalled for.
Tyler, I didnt accuse you of being a Palahniuk fanboy or anything, I just wanted to know if you read the whole thing... anyway, I read it and I think its actually a good review. She gives PLENTY of examples to back up her complaints, and while it does come off as cruel, it doesnt come off as cruel just because, say, she doesn't like him, it comes off as cruel because, well, she doesn't like his books and she thinks he's a terrible, overrated author who just got successful because of a movie based on one of his books. Its a good review.
Chuck also sent a letter to Salon.com that I found on the site in which he responds to the review, but by saying no more than "why dont you try to do a better job?"... to me, those are the things you say when you know you've lost.
Skip Choke, it sucks, but Fight Club is a wonderful book.Quote:

btw...IMO the last few Chuck books havn't been all that impressive, BUT Survivor is one of the great pieces of work I have ever read...better than Fight Club by far.
I know you weren't accusing me of being a fanboy, I was just mentioning that for everyone reading the thread.Quote:

And yet, I eat it up. I find his sentences "very mezmerizing" in rhythem (as said in many quotes on the back of his books) and his one liners quite funny. They're entertaining books that have some good messages? Does he go a little overboard trying to stuff over used and obvious pop culture complaints into every page of the book? Sometimes, yes. Still, all I know is I enjoy reading his books and so that's what I'm going to keep on doing for the time being.
Tragic, very well put...I very much agree.
I thought the review was hilarious.
That's harsh. But if the review's accurate, Chuck had it coming.
Anyone else find negative reviews (or anything) so much more fulfilling than positive ones?
I'd know if it were an acurate review if the novel wasn't only available in fuckin' hardcover. I refuse to buy a hardcover version of a book I never read.
Also, kinda funny, CP is all anti-consumerism, yet, Diary is only available in hardcover for the first year it's released...
Chuck probably didn't have a say in that decision.
Yeah, I figured as much but, still, quite ironic.
Tyler, you like books by Palahniunk?
Man, I'd never have guessed.
Go read Godfather. Or better yet, don't.Quote:
