If they knew about sending the extra copies? If they did it maliciously (trying to screw the company), then no, should caught they don't deserve a second chance. Anyway. My argumentative drive has left me. mindfield seems to be alright with the situation. My feelings haven't changed on the matter, but I felt like an injustice had taken place, and felt compelled to speak up on the matter. If I was out of line or offended anyone, I apologize. My aim was to illustrate how I felt, and not to belittle other's for their actions.

Moral of the story... if someone fuck's up and you benefit from it, share the fuck up only with those you know personally. And think if your actions will be hurting or helping others before you do them.

It depends on context. If it was done in the costitutionly protected parody that is Fight Club, or with no harm intended, I'd say no. If it was on of the other boards in a context meant as purely inflamatory of hatefull I'd say yes.

I understand.

For me, it's simply this question:

If i worked at this place, was responsable for the mistake or owned the company/held stock, would I want to be told by someone about a mistake so that I could hopefully correct it?

If the answer is "Yes", then I can't see how anyone would not act on that.

Context is hard to prove in a written media, unless ther is clear intent on malice it will be hard to prove. For his ISP to end their contract with him a paying customer it would have to be well documented and free of any gray words like "I wish", "hope", "would enjoy seeing" or anything to that effect. Hate speech I believe only applies to designated slurs against ethnic or cultural groups, not being really mean to someone. I'm no lawyer though, and you can try to tell on Matt if you want, but all of that is really different than what Matt did to mindfield.

I'm not planning on "telling on" Matt, I was just wondering if it would fall under that umbrella.

Firstly, you probably should not have told anyone you got 11 free copies of the game because someone will indefinitely rat you out. Secondly, It's your call to return them but if you don't, think of what they may do if they find the error. Situations like this (even on a grand or small scale) add to the increased costs for games. Prices for merchandise in stores rise because of theft, somewhat like this situation right now...

Whistle-blowing is a form of loyality.

Whether MVS intended it that way or not, he helped the thief in question answer for the good that he should have at the very begining.

MVS helped him seek what was in his true self interest. There's nothing altruistic about that.

And I happen to agree with MVS. He did the right thing, and even though he says he doesn't think it's praise worthy, I'm still going to tell him so.
