Futureshop: Buy 1, get 11 free

The face I made when I oppened the box, confirmed my enthousiast. It was way too heavy to be a simple DVD case along with a memory card. God dammit! haha.

It all started yesterday, when I played the Soul Calibur 2 demo featured on the OXM October disc (I think). Two or three rounds and I was SOLD! It was exactly what I was expecting as a sequel to the dreamcast game. But I wanted to get the PS2 version for practical purpose, this system is shared with my roomates in the living room.

So I logged in and went to futureshop.ca, I ordered the PS2 version online because I did not feel like going downtown for the sole pupose of buying a game and return back home. On my way to check out, I thought I needed a new PS2 memory card (those damn sports games take all the space!).

Best 90$ I've EVER spent. Them silly did NOT ship me one game, they shipped an entire BOX full of Soul Calibur 2 (12 to be exact!). If I ordered the Xbox version instead, would such a luck have happened? Would the guy in the backstore have made the same mistake? Honestly I don't really care right now, I think I'll just turn the PS2 on and play copy #5.. or maybe #9. Ahh! Decisions... :lol:

None in online shopping but back when I bought Gitaroo Man I opened the case to find two discs inside.

When I bought the JSR and the JSRF soundtracks, I received the SPC5 and the SPC5 remix tracks instead. I contacted the seller, and he sent me the JSR ones and told me I could keep the SC5 ones. Yay!

I also received two OMFG BRAND NEW UNOPENED Earthworm Jim 2's for the Saturn. I returned one, since they wouldn't really turn too big a profit.

Those were a while ago, nothing recent I remember.

So you sell me a game used for $10, I open it up, and you forgot two other CDs in the game's case. So because you screwed up, those games are now mine as well?

Mistakes happen. If you take advantage of the mistake and keep the extra games, you're a thief, plain and simple. If you're okay being a thief, then just say so. But don't try to justify your keeping of the extra copies.

Being in online retail myself I have mixed feelings on this. For one thing, what kind of fucking idiot would pack an unopend box of SC2's? That's just idiotic. I think you should let them know though... that's a big hit for them to take... they should offer you something for your honesty though... that's just the right thing to do.

People should be responsible enough to keep track of what they're selling and what they're shipping out. If they don't pay attention enough to notice eleven extra copies sent out, well, that's not the customer's problem.

mindfield didn't steal a thing. If this goes unnoticed on the retailer's radar, well, lucky him. Sure it's not honest, but it isn't stealing either.

Mistakes happen though... although not usually on that scale. What if you ordered 12 copies and they only shipped you for 1? I'm sure you'd be up in arms about that, and would contact them right away, and expect them to make it right. People in online stores aren't infallible... they make mistakes like everyone else. Although I continue to maintain that whoever packed that is the biggest fucking moron ever.

I fully stand on the side of the consumer at all times. If you had paid for 12 and you got 1, then it's the consumer's job to realize that and rectify the situation. Same thing applies with the retailer. They shipped 12 when he paid for 1. If they say to mindfield to ship them back, he definitely should. But at this point the responsibility is on them to fix their problem.

Good point. Look guys I shouldn't feel guilty right now. I just recieved a freakin package, I didn't hack their site to ship me 12. I realize the value of eleven games and I know it's not a tiny mistake. I'll play the waiting game for a while and see if they contact me first. They have my bill, my email adress, etc. Now, is that wrong?

i cancelled a $5 preorder for f-zero gx (i bought it elsewhere,) but the guy gave me back $50. i didn't realize until i walked out of the store, but i still brought it back. stupid? maybe, but i felt bad.. especially considering that i've been shopping there for years.

that said, keeping the sc2s is tacky, even if it's your right.

To be a theif, you have to actually "steal" something in order to qualify. However, having a package shipped to you "as is" does go against that, so I don't think I would be going as far as to call him one. Do you see retailers getting sued or jailed for selling unclaimed product?

Mindfield: I'd wait awhile before selling them. I belive it's either 7 days to a month to legally correct the problem before it's out of their hands. Of course by then, I'll be willing to accept freebies if you don't mind. :D

I don't know Futureshop. I'm not sure who or what they are, but if this happened to me with NCSX or even VGD (to a lesser degree), I'd let them know.

The reason beside being honest or not is... I hate buying games at Best Buy. I don't like buying them at Circuit City, Toys R Us or even GameStop.

And if smaller boutique type shops don't get support, in a few years that'll be the only options.

Maybe it's elitest. I don't know, but an independant game store is just a better environment. You actually get intellegent input from the staff, they really do do requests for games they don't stock and most of the time they'll go out of thier way to cater to your needs.

That's why I'd send them back. Because I shudder at a world where every game I buy comes from Amazon or a department store.

(I do buy games there, sometimes it's just unavoidable, but if I can, I will order from NCSX or VGD).

I look at it this way - the store obviously made a mistake. It's not like they intended to ship the extra copies. He has eleven copies of a game that he didn't pay for, error or not, and if he makes the willfull decision to keep them, I think it's definitely theft. Selling them to line his own pockets would be even worse. He doesn't have to keep them, and shouldn't because they don't belong to him. I don't think the fact that the store made a mistake makes it permissible - the store may not even be aware that the mistake has been made.

Besides, if he returns them, or at the very least contacts them about it, the store may even compensate him in some way for being honest about it.

Every month or so, when I go to buy smokes and red bull, the guy at the gas station forgets to add something in. I'll tell him and pay for it, I don't want anything that I'm not paying for.

Some places pick up on that, and are cool. The Korean liquor store in Hollywood where I lived, they shorted themselves a few times, and I told them when they did it.

Later on, when I only had money for smokes, the owner would give me a few red bulls and tell me to pay later.

I agree, especially about your scenario with keeping the $50. In fact, I can't underestand how anyone who has worked a chasier job in their life wouldn't return the money. You can get in a lot of trouble if your drawer in short at the end of the night.

If you're going to keep them don't sell 'em. Just return one at a time to stores that take back sealed games for store credit. That's 11 diffrent games for ya.

I'd wait 2 weeks and then e-mail them saying I got 8 extra copys. I'm a theif but I'm not that greedy. :D

Okay, first, by the technical definition of "thief," no, he is not one. I still consider him one, and am using it because I'd rather not just call him an asshole.

And second, how can you sit there and honestly say he has NO moral obligation? Maybe you need to brush up on your morals. He is in posession of goods that he did not rightfully obtain due to a mistake. For whatever reason, he was accidentally sent twelve copies of the game instead of one. He has no moral claim to those twelve copies. What a MORAL person would do is contact the company and, on their dime, ship them back the extra eleven copies. This isn't about "screwing the man." Just because "the man" is a fuck doesn't make it right for you to be one in return.

I honestly can't believe some of you in here are so pathetic that you would actually think keeping the games is okay. I also can't believe that the top person that I am in agreement in this thread is Matt. *heh* I think that means the world is going to end or something.

This isn't like getting onion rings instead of fries, or a soft drink when you didn't order one at your local fast food joint. This is a rather large and costly mistake, one that could end up costing somebody their job. Receiving roughly $550 of merchandise that you didn't pay for (if they didn't catch this and charge him) is not something you just shrug off and say, "Whoops, their screw up."

It is totally dishonest. I've said that from the start. But it's easy to sit back and point fingers and say "That's bad!", but to actually be in a situation like that, of seemingly good fortune, and say "Well, better give this $1000 worth of merchandise back, because someone who doesn't know how to do their job might lose that job!".

He could just as easily give that back to them, and the executives at this company could very well fire the person who prepared his order for making such a huge fuck-up. That's just as likely as any other scenario we can propose for this issue.

And for the record, what happened with epmode and the $5 preorder, I would do the same thing. When you're dealing with people in the flesh, it puts a more personal perspective on things. I don't want to see the manager at my local game store (who might be a cool guy/girl) lose their job for my own self-serving interests. But when it's ebgames.com or amazon.com or whatever, it's a lot easier to not feel remorse for being shiesty and making a quick buck. Is it justified or right because of that? Hell no it's not. But, chances are, most people feel that way.

I recommend contacting them, informing them of their error, and seeing what they say. Maybe they'll let you keep a copy or two, in which case, you'll still get more than you paid for, and a clear consience to boot.

But, my point still stands - try to make excuses for it all you want, it's still the wrong thing to do. And you either do the right thing, or you're an ass. This isn't a Robin Hood situation where you could justify doing something wrong.

And if we're willing to say, "Yeah, it's wrong, oh well," then we might as well just say "fuck it" to everything in the world and let all things go to hell.

Shidoshi, you consistently amaze me. I am proud to anounce that I agree with you 100% for the very first time.

I don't think anyone was telling you it's the right thing to do. If anything I was trying to justify why most people would probably want to keep them. Not everyone has a comfortable enough life to always live morally unforunately, so personal gain many times takes priority.

Reguardless of whether or not he took a proactive approach in appropreating these items, the simple act of not returning something he didn't rightly pay for is theft.

Consult the law books of any state and you'll find he's liable for theft.

Honestly, I would keep them...

but thats only because any money I can get would be really helpful. 12 games X 50 = 600 dollars. Dang. Its not a lot of money to a working guy, but to me it is.

But I'd feel bad about it...

And I know in 5 or 10 years when Im financially secure I would DEFINITELY send them back. But not at the moment.

"They fucked up" is a valid enough excuse to keep them. However, next time you give someone at a register a 50 instead of a ten, or drop a five in the street, it's not yours anymore, because you fucked up.

Personally, I would return them, simply because I could sleep better at night knowing I did the right thing than I would on a pile of inferior ports of Soul Calibur 2.

Wow I didn't expect such a reactions from people. And it's interesting to read your comments. But before accusing me of thief, man without moral, or plain idiotic... give me a break here!

I have been in possession of these games for less than 20 hours. I am still considering what to do about it. I first asked for other people's thoughts on message boards and in real life. Now, why is it that I don't feel any remorse? Maybe that's because an online shop sent me a package by mistake and no theft on my part has ever happened.

Keeping something that does not belong to me is wrong, but I'm far from being a thief. Now I'd like to add some more to this situation.

1- If I inform them of the error and send them back, surely Futureshop will appreciate, and sell them back. So a multi-million dollars company will meet its profit expectations this fiscal year and all share holders will live happily ever after.

2- What if I sell them to some of my close friends and use the money for something positive. Say, sponsor a sick child in a third-world country. Hehe, I know it's extreme but let me show you my point. I'm not saying this is what I intend to do, but let's see where it goes. I make my friends happy for selling them a good game for a fair price. And I practically save a child's life (or many children), feed them and send them to school for the rest of their life.

See? What some of you called "moral" earlier, I call it "being a victim of laws". Something's not yours, so it is your responsability as a honest tax-paying citizen, to send it back right away? Futureshop problably has not realized it yet and we all know it. So why not using this good fortune to make the world better instead? That's what I call morals. Sponsoring a sick child was a typical response, but I could just give it to a charity foundation in Montreal. Anyone that could use some extra bucks.

By the way, take into consideration that I am dealing with a company owned by share holders who would care not much about morals. I would return it to the owner if I was dealing with a different source (like someone on Ebay for exemple). Also I am not trying to justify anything, just think before accusing someone of theft.

This reminds me how Sony sent me 2 PS2s. It was March after the launch when systems were still scarce. They had a new shipment at a certain time of day on Playstation.com. I waited and entered my info as quick as possible, but didn't include the unit number for my condo. So I immediately called them to try to fix things but they were closed already. I called several times over the week to try to track the package and eventually they just sent a replacement one. I ended up getting PS2 and was ecstatic. To my surprise I come home one day to see another FedEx slip from Sony a few weeks later, for my original PS2 order. I hid it in my closet for a few days, and when I got the balls I sold the unopened one to a local import shop at retail price ($300) since they were selling it normally for a jacked up price. I wasted the money of course, but it was one hell of a surprise.

This may or may not be true, but I would think it's worth looking into.

Best 90$ I've EVER spent. Them silly did NOT ship me one game, they shipped an entire BOX full of Soul Calibur 2 (12 to be exact!).

The face I made when I oppened the box, confirmed my enthousiast. It was way too heavy to be a simple DVD case along with a memory card. God dammit! haha.

It all started yesterday, when I played the Soul Calibur 2 demo featured on the OXM October disc (I think). Two or three rounds and I was SOLD! It was exactly what I was expecting as a sequel to the dreamcast game. But I wanted to get the PS2 version for practical purpose, this system is shared with my roomates in the living room.

So I logged in and went to futureshop.ca, I ordered the PS2 version online because I did not feel like going downtown for the sole pupose of buying a game and return back home. On my way to check out, I thought I needed a new PS2 memory card (those damn sports games take all the space!).

Best 90$ I've EVER spent. Them silly did NOT ship me one game, they shipped an entire BOX full of Soul Calibur 2 (12 to be exact!). If I ordered the Xbox version instead, would such a luck have happened? Would the guy in the backstore have made the same mistake? Honestly I don't really care right now, I think I'll just turn the PS2 on and play copy #5.. or maybe #9. Ahh! Decisions...

I agree with you 100% about that. Posting about something like that was not a smart move on his part. I find it equally sad that another human being saw fit to make his decisions for him, and potentionally get the guy in serious trouble (doubtful, but possible).

Was it a dumb move on his part? Yep, sure was.

Did you have to go out of your way to report this guy, who has done absolutely nothing wrong to you? No, you didn't.

So, yes, I feel sorry for this guy. He tried to share something that brought him some joy with others, and instead the people he wanted to tell the tale to ended up turning him in. He's going to feel pretty shitty in the morning, and for that, I feel remorse for the guy. Thus, I apologize.

[edit]The "I agree with you 100% about that" is in regards to MVS's post, not about him being a prick. That issue is still debatable.

I would argue that you at least owe him some decency. He has shown you (personally) no ill will, but you saw fit to play judge and jury and report him.

And as for treating people like you want to be treated, this is by no means the same as telling someone if their girlfriend or boyfriend is cheating on them. In fact, I'd say it's just as much not your business in that case (if not more so in the realm of personal affairs) as it is in this one.

I, personally, would feel a twinge of regret if this cost someone their job.

However, what if your actions (as I said earlier in the thread) cost the person who packaged his order to lose their job anyway? You think the company you e-mailed wants this person to send out 12 copies of a game again by mistake? There is no way to say whether you helped or hurt the person responsible for the mistake. Think about that one.

They should at least get a second chance, but if we treat people the way you would treat them, their bosses will probably just fire them on the spot (where was mindfield's second (or first?) chance?)

I'm not interested in changing your opinion; I'm just telling you that what you did can also be applied to you. You sent futureshop an email regarding a computer mistake, I would send an email to your ISP informing them of a breach of contract between you and them. In the end, it's all the same -- it usually ends up in a rectification of the problem.

How is flaming a breach of contract? Not being argumentative, just curious.
