Need for Speed Underground - Any word on what version is best?

While picking up Viewtiful Joe I stopped to play some Need for Speed Underground on the PS2 kiosk. I was a huge fan of the last NFS (Hot Pursuit 2), and Underground looked so good that I went and put down a pre-order for it. I put down the order for the PS2 version (since that was the best last time around), but that can be changed if need be.

So..... Anybody have any info? Does any version edge the other two out? Will Xbox and Cube be significantly worse again? I would really like to go with Cube if I could this time around due to progressive scan and the Wavebird, but only if it at least equals the quality of the PS2 version.

i think the ps2 version is the only one with online and headset capability.

Pulled this quote from a gamespot interview with NFS:U's producer:

"Although all the platforms have their strengths and weaknesses, the team wanted to make sure that no platform was shortchanged because we couldn't create a specific technique on a console due to hardware limitations. I know what you're thinking--"Sure, sure, you just don't want to tell us which of your 'kids' is the ugliest." It's really not the case. Sit all four platforms side by side and you'd have a hard time telling me which is which. In our game theaters in the office, where we have all the platforms set up, you oftentimes have to try multiple controllers before you figure out which platform is showing. It's a big win for the consumer, since you usually have to sacrifice something on each platform. The first time we showed the game at E3, we were asked if it was running on an Xbox. It was actually on the PS2."

Based on that, it appears that EA learned their lesson from the lackluster GC/XB ports of HP2. It was also mentioned during the same interview that U is made with the HP2 engine. Hopefully all versions are pretty close (online aside), so then it'll come down to controller preference if you have multiple consoles.

The previews I've read haven't mentioned who's handling the individual ports, which would be interesting information.

I think the game looks incredible.

Good news indeed. I might be able to switch over to the GC version afterall. I care not for online.

I guess it's just time to wait for playable versions to reach reviewers' hands.

Sounds like they optimezed the hell out of it for PS2 and didn't improve it any for the GC and XBox

Did you go to the Concord Pike Gamestop? I didn't preorder, but they still had a couple Joe bobbleheads left and hooked me up.

Need for Speed did look great, I wish EA was online with Xbox.

I just got NFS Hot Pursuit 2 for PS2 at 25 bucks(Gamestop :D) and after playing it I felt that it was fucking awesome game and that it was one of the PS2's best racers. I'm really anticipating the next game so I was wondering that myself.

I'll most likely get the PS2 version if it indeed is the same on all platforms same with SSX3.

Yup. Concord Pike Gamestop. They offered me an extra bobblehead as well. At first I thought they got the other style in, and I was psyched for that, but then when I saw it was the same one I already had I turned it down.

one thing i really noticed when i played the demo was the sounds from your car... They were startlingly realistic....
seems like a really good racer, judging from the demo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but EA had a different team port NFS:HP2 to X-Box and GC, I believe. They were just a case of poor ports.

Back on-topic, I am looking forward to this. The media on this game looks awesome, especially the wet road.

I normally don't like EA, but I agree this game looks incredible. It'll be tough later this year trying to pick out a racing game to buy.. 'course, that's only going by the logic that I only need one racing game :sweat:

I just bought a Hyundai Tiburon (in real life).. it'll be cool to race a virtual version in NFSU and turn it into a rice rocket. Looking forward to it.

EA has shown that they dont give a fuck about the Xbox or GC (although, oddly, the Xbox Madden is the best one), so I think just getting the PS2 version is the safest bet.

The developers have remarked in interviews before that the XBox and GC versions were sub-par, and that Underground won't suffer the same problems.

I hope this attitude by EA goes for all their games, especially SSX3.

I think Black Box did all three versions this time.

Funny that the same developer of NHL Hitz and Sega Soccer Slam is now the heir apparent to the NFS series (having made NFS: Hot Pursuit II as well). EA only bought them up like a year ago, too.

I picked up Need For Speed Underground today, going for the Game Cube version, as reviews made it out to be basically the same title across all three platforms, and as it's the only version of the game with progressive scan, the GC version seemed the way to go.

Starting up the game and skipping the grainy FMV, I was surprised to see some ugly textures, slowdown, and a choppy frame rate, and I hadn't even started a race yet...this was on the car select screen!

The race itself was no better. I can more than deal with 30fps, but this game was choppy and filled with slowdown more so than any racer I can even recall that's been released this generation; this wasn;t even a smooth 20-24fps; it felt like a choppy 20fps. The thought of trading the game in towards Counterstrike tomorrow definitely crossed my mind.

Later on this afternoon, I went to Gamestop with a friend, and while he was at the counter, I noticed that they had the PS2 version on display. Even on the crappy display monitor, the game looked better. I tried a race, and was surprised to see that the choppiness plaguing the GC version was not present, the textures seemed better, and there were even a few effects such as light trails from street lamps that I didn't remember seeing in the GC version.

To sum it up, this seems to be Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 all over again: The PS2 version has a good 30fps frame rate and looks very sharp, while the GC version is a choppy, slow mess of a game once again. I'm very curious to see if the Xbox version has a steady frame rate, and almost bought it instead of the PS2 version, but I decided to avoid that as I didn't want to get burned again.

I am getting tired of reading reviews claiming a multiplatform release runs the same across all three systems, and then buying it for one platform only to find that it runs much better on another. IGN and Gamespot in particular seemed to just cut and paste their review of the game for all three systems, and between the PS2 and GC versions at least, they are definitely not the same.

I'm sure that IGN will have a comparison up within the next few days, but this is the type of thing that needs to be addressed when or before a game is released, and using the same review and not at least mentioning differences in frame rate or other visuals needs to stop ASAP.

I'm a PC advocate but unless you have all the gear (steering wheel, etc.) I'd much rather control with a PS2 controller then a keyboard.

After a few hours of play, the main downside I'm seeing is the framerate. No, the Xbox version isn't anywhere near smooth. It chugs along. But that's OK because right now my rice rocket Civic is chugging along as well. We'll see how much of a problem the framerate turns out to be when the cars get faster. Overall, I remember the PS2 version looking amazing in Funcoland, and the Xbox version only looks "OK". Gah. I'm never buying a non-PS2 version of an EA game again. :) I really wouldn't trust the current word on the street that all three are the same. My memory of the PS2 game isn't that clear, but I'm 90% sure the visuals were much better....

Gah. Oh well. The game still controls great. The track I've been given so far is laid out well. The shortcuts have been toned waaaaaaaay down from HP2. This track is far more linear. The reckless driving awards are cool and kind or immitate Project Gotham.

Anyway, I need to play more. Definatly a ton of fun, but so far it's no NFS HP2 if only due to fewer crazy track branches and track variety (but the whole rice rocket customization thing goes a long way to making up for that). We'll see if Tokyo Extreme Racer 3 can top it (my guess is yes).

It is worth the $50 one way or another.

Just played the PC demo. Good, good stuff, although I would have liked to be in a different car.

I thought the drag racing portion would suck, how much fun can driving in a straight line be? It's actually pretty damn good in this game. I like how the screen starts to shake when you get in higher speeds, simulating how a sports car actually feels at 100+ mph. Only thing is there's NO way that's a 1/4 mile, it took my car 28 seconds.

Playing the game demo cranked at 1280x1024 is a very beautiful experience indeed. Using my Logitech wingman the controls seemed only ok, i may need to invest in a ps2-usb converter.

i'm going to save myself $10 and get the PC version, i was very surprized how much fun i had with the demo. The drag racing is really neat when you turn motion blur on, and the sound effects are very well done.

Now is the game better than "Burnout 2" for the XBOX ? Graphically is Need For Speed Underground similar to Midnight Club 2 for the XBOX ?

I love Burnout 2 and consider it the best racing game period. The graphics and controls are outstanding. Is Need for Speed Underground better graphically than Burnout 2 ?

Can't comment on NFS:U yet, but I have to concur with your Burnout 2 gushing. I have more fun with that game than Project Gotham 1 and 2 combined.

The only thing that makes me say "eh" about it is the rubberband AI. Once your turbo runs out, the opponent cars catch up quickly. Likewise, even after I've had a huge accident, it doesn' take long for me to catch up to them.

Gotham may have all the depth, but Burnout 2 has all the fun.

the only thing that keeps burnout 2 down for me is the interruption to show a replay of your crash every time you hit something.. completely ruins the flow of the game..

otherwise it's good.

there's no replay, it just yanks the camera out to show the car when you crash. It's a heck of a lot better than not crashing at all and going "thud" against a wall or another car and having to back up or push your way around the obsticle.

The only things I've heard about Burnout 3 are it'll have 200+ cars, will remove traffic, and will concentrate on online head-to-head racing. Seems to go against the Burnout formula, sadly........is that what you've heard?

What's a little forgiving, however, is the unconfirmed news that members of Criterion's Burnout team is working on a totally new racing game titled Dust Storm. That might make up for the supposed B3 changes.

Found an interesting quirk...... Can somebody confirm this?

It looks like there is some sort of copy protection on the Xbox version. Usually I load my games onto my HD and play off of that so I don't have to ever bother with discs..... But NFSU will not start without the DVD in the tray.

Alot of people say that the PS2 version has better effects and stuff so I'll probably go with that one for a GC vs PS2 version thing.

Again, I remember being highly impressed with the PS2 graphics at the in-store kiosk, and the Xbox visuals on the game I own are pretty far from impressive.

None of that stopped me from playing 'til 2:00 in the morning however. :)

but it had nothing to do with the visuals..

the sounds from the car were a bit better in the PS2 version..

but i maintain that the visuals in all 3 are identical.

I hate this shit. Because people want to develop for the lowest common denominator, everything is developed for the PS2 with "minor" graphical improvements for the Gamecube and Xbox. I hate that. Usually the games, when ported to the "other two" systems look slightly better or slightly worse than the PS2 version. This guy thinks his team has accomplished something by making them all look the same? BULLSHIT! People don't buy a game on Xbox or Gamecube for it to be exactly the same as the PS2 version. There should be 3 distinct versions of the game that define the console they are on with their specific strengths and features.

This stuff is shit and it slows progress in so many ways. I hope all of this guys stupid kids turn out ugly. So much for innovation.

You also have to remember EA's prime target is the PS2. They know they'll get the most sales there, it has online play, of course they want to try to make that version the best it can be. Plus EA loves Sony the best, it would seem... every review i've read on any of their multiplatform games has put the ps2 one ahead.

I have to agree with Master, but it is even worse than dragging the other two down to PS2 level.

If you read into that, it means they didn't even play to the PS2's strengths..... So it just flat out could have looked better all around. I'm sure they could have gotten the framerate up at least if they tapped into the strengths of each system. I'll take maximizing the visual potential over homogenious-ness accross all three any day. Low res textures and 30 FPS on the Xbox? Sign me up! Still isn't as bad as the Hot Pursuit 2 fiasco, but it's still pretty bad.

At the end of the day I'd be 90 X happier if every game was made as a system exclusive with no intention of porting. Even PS2 exclusives would look better.



And still NFS Underground is a ton of fun. Damn! :)

Well Freekstyle, NBA Street and MOH Frontline on Gamecube are pretty much the better versions compared to their PS2 versions.

SSX3, SSX Tricky, NFSU, NFS HP2 seem to be all best on PS2 for various reasons so EA's focus on the PS2 versions since they usually sell the best isn't unwarranted.

I'm going to say, "any but the Xbox version."

PS2 is far and away the better, as with most all EA games.

What does the Cube version have over the Xbox?

As I was playing today I realized one advantage the Xbox has over the other two versions: The controler is 9 times better for racing games. I'm sorry, but you need analogue sholder triggers for racing games ever since the Saturn introduced the concept. While the Cube does have analogue sholder triggers, the "click" is really annoying when trying to slightly ease off the gas.

And yeah, I know you can buy a wheel controller, but as far as stock pads go, I'll take Xbox.

Chibi: The Xbox version freezes alot. There's NO custom soundtrack, there's no online play and there's nothing else of note. It's quite frankly the inferior version. For once, I will personally attest - Underground on Xbox has framerate issues. It really does this time, not smoke and mirrors like that guy talks about. Get it for Cube or better yet, PS2.

nintendo dork: The Cube version looks better everytime if you go by store kiosks. Instead of compareing the systems for once compare the TVs your looking at them on. The Xbox kiosks have piss poor TVs and that's a stupid call on Microsofts part. The Gamecube and PS2 have wonderfull displays - particularly the PS2. Also, the only reason I would get the Gamecube version is if I didn't care if it had online features or not and didn't own a HDTV. The reason I really give GC the edge is because what the Xbox version lacks that it should have. Custom fucking Sountrack.

Hmmm... I haven't had the Xbox version crash on me once. But I will admit it has framerate problems.

I still don't know which version to get :cry:

Do I go with the Cube version so I don't have to worry about framerates.. or Xbox because of the badass racer controller and glorious 5.1 sound?

Truth: Xbox version has framerate issues and no custom soundtrack. Framerate, I don't care so much about. No custom soundtrack, yeah that irritated the fuck out of me. I just like all my Xbox racers to have custom soundtracks, and the fact that this one didn't lost a lot of points with me.

BUT, the gameplay is still fun, the graphics are pretty tight and 5.1 audio kicks ass.

I know nothing about the GC and PS2 versions. They don't offer custom soundtracks, right? I mean, those consoles don't have HDD storage, right? If that's the case, I'm not too upset with the Xbox version.

Maybe the question doesn't belong here, but - how do you color the vinyl on the cars? Friggin white and grey...

Oh yeah, I give a thumbs up on the GC version. It frameskips from time to time, but stays within a comfy range.

It's never frozen on me.
None of the versions have custom soundtrack.
Online play was fucked from the demo and beyond with cheaters.
All versions aside from the PC version has framerate issues.

I have both the XBOX and PC versions. The PC version is leagues beyond any console port but I like the XBOX one just fine.

After playing this game extensively on 3 systems I have concluded that the Project Gotham Racing 2 version is clearly the best.

I went by this thread and picked up the Ps2 version, and I have to wonder now if the Xbox version is best. Whenever I first started playing I didn't think I was going to like it, because when the cars are lined up ready to start (and any other time that multiple cars are onscreen) the framerate crawls along until it evens out.
With that said it looks excellent. And after putting in a lot of time it's not really that bad of a problem, it's mostly when a lot is going on, and as long as you are in the lead (which you should be) it's not a big deal.
I'm having a lot of fun with the game, and have already put in around four hours.
Can someone who has played the Ps2 version and the Xbox version tell me if the Xbox revision has the same slowdown problem?

The XBOX version only slowsdown when theres mass amounts of crap going on at once. The PS2 version is ugly as sin.

The PS2 version ugly as sin? What drug were you smoking dude... It has a few shutters in the framerate, otherwise it looks very good in motion.

getting this game online is near impossible, if i had to do it again i'd get it for the xbox or GC(dont care for the online feature). come to think of it, i think the game sucks hairy balls! i'd save my money and get another game instead.

the graphics are horrible, seems like everything has a coat of vaseline on it. The soundtrack is too ghetto for my taste. The framrate is non consistent and annoying, and trying to see ahead of you is well....goodluck!

i was dissapointed, and would rather play NFS:Hot Persuit 2 all over agian instead!
