My Alienware is a notebook, not a box, so building one "myself" really wasn't all that much of an option. Only as of late are notebooks more readily available with 64+ VRAM solutions on board (which I needed for games) from a larger base of manufacturers. I wouldn't buy an Alienware box.

As far as XP is concerned, you're lucky. I think the stability issue is much more of a problem with Notebooks than Desktops, but I can't speak eloquently on that issue. It seems XP loads a lot of unnecessary stuff on startup that you have to manually disable and monitor over time. Useless, uninstalled, "half installed" apps shouldn't be an issue with the OS - if you're not using it, why should the state of it matter? The OS shouldn't even notice it.

What are you talking about? XP does come with a bunch of not entirely necessary junk running to start with, but those programs and services don't make the OS any less stable and are easily disabled. Do you really think MSN Messenger is responsible for your computer crashing multiple times nightly?

If you don't want to build a PC, you don't have to buy a system from Dell, Compaq, HP, or Gateway. With a Mac, you are essentially stuck dealing with Apple, for better or for worse.

Er, the world according to who, you? Alienware's are generally recognized as being overpriced, they certainly aren't perceived by anyone as being "crap". Besides, name a better, cheaper notebook with a decent graphic board on it. Dell? MicroExpress? Who? Besides, I got mine on Ebay for about 1/2 what Alienware was charging. ;)

Yeah, true. But, in the same sense, Apple is fairly well recognized as building rock solid systems that last for years and years and you don't have to worry about shit like DMA conflicts and plug and pray hardware. You DO get what you pay for. Mac's certainly cost more, but they are also FAR more idiot proof and, now, are more stable as well.

Besides, you can buy an old G3 for chump change on Ebay and throw in a G4 and some RAM and you'll have a G4 for significantly less than you would if you bought one new. There's no argument that one can't do that and save tons of cash.

This is all bullshit. Those programs and services may be superfluous to some people, but they're not going to destabilize the operating system. I didn't know you had to be super smart to know where the control panel is in Windows.

Ok, let me try and spell this out for you. The reason that shit "just works" with Apples is because they only have to support limited amounts of hardware and software. Once again you are exchanging flexibility for price and convenience, which is fine if you're an idiot when it comes to computers.

Mamoscott, yea, there may be 3000 different types of CD-ROM drives you can buy for your PC, but really there's only one or two brands that everyone buys (Plextor, Sony, etc.). Likewise, you could get one of dozens of different brands of video cards, but chances are you got an Nvidia. Video card? Asus or Abit. Sound card? Creative Labs. Hard drive? Maxtor or Western Digital, I would guess. Mouse? Logitech or Microsoft. Shit, the vast majority of my friends who built their own PCs use Antec cases.

Etc., etc., and so on. See, yea, you got choice in the PC world but 99% of those zillions of different brands are not even worth mentioning at all, and chances are your PC has the same exact components as 90% of the other people who feel 31337 because they built their own machines...

And those $300-$500 prices for top of the line ATI/Nvidia cards tells me that these companies know this fact.

And youre also paying for a much, much MUCH better operating system, dude. Yea, sure, XP is "okay", and it does the job just fine, but OS X is a real piece of work and its a terrific operating system... anyone with half a brain could see that within five minutes of using it.

And also Apple machines hold their value far better than Windows. I guess that's a consequence of having just less machines out there, but still its the truth. You could run new software on a Macintosh 500 if you want, my old 450 couldn't do that.

I build all my pc's, you guys have heard the story before...

I run 1 XP machine and the other 4 run 2000 pro or server...

They never fucking crash... neither does my Mac...

An emac is 799.00 with cd burner etc... a Dell which is cheap as hell but a great pc will cost more with a monitor and comparable specs...

I mean, there are companies where I'd buy their laptop, but not their desktop. Some companies make nice laptops, but shit desktops. Some companies are the other way around. For example, I might buy an IBM desktop, but I'd never, eeeeeeever buy an IBM laptop.

Why's that? Thinkpads are reasonably priced and nice quality machines, however ugly they may be.

I see the need for Alienware laptops, though. Though the ones with desktop machine procs have next to no battery life, they're some of the most portable gaming machines out there. I'd rather take one of those to a LAN party than a full size case under one arm and my LCD under another. Not a lot of other products compare as far as I know.

Sony, on the other hand... I love the design of their desktops and their laptops... I despise the function. Sony makes the worst software, hands down, of any major vendor I can think of. It's a shame, their products are so cool, too.
