Call most vendors who mass produce computers and ask what brand ram they use and recommend...
Dell and Apple both recommend Crucial for a reason...
I've reccently expanded my laptop search to include ibooks and powerbooks. I really wanted something small and light for travel, and you wind up paying a lot for it on the PC side of the world. The Mac would do everything I need it to do on the go (well, except maybe play Heroes 3 ;p)
I've also got an iPod, but I think I'd have to reformat it in order to be able to use it with a Mac. That really wouldn't be a problem, but all of my mp3s are on my PC. iTunes might be the answer there though.
Just out of curiousity, how do they handle .AVI files? I see that divx is available, so I'd assume they can play em fine.
Masaka - Heroes 3 and Heroes 3 Complete were both on the Mac. Only problem is, they'll only run in classic, and it's been discontinued so it may be hard to find.
(Assuming you're talking HOMM3 here...)
Depending on your rev of iPod, it would work without having to reformat it; however, if you want to add MP3s from the Mac, you would need to reset what it considers its home computer.
AVI files are often painful to deal with until you install DIVX, and then everything is peachy kean.
yah I was talking about HOMM3. I wouldn't be using it for gaming in general, but HOMM3 and Diablo 2 are 2 things I can fire up for 30 minutes or so at a time and just kind of play, which is nice when sitting in an airport.
I've got one of the old 5 gig iPods, so I might be out of luck.
Pretty much every AVI I watch uses DIVX, so I think I'd be alright.
One of my friends has an older TiBook, so I'm going to toy with it to see if there are any problems reading the data dvds/cdrs that I have right now and try out various tasks, then do some more shopping around.
Macs are nice, but XP is rock solid. Building a x86 box is noticeably cheaper than a Mac, period. The price argument is a valid one regardless of recent developments. I recently built a PC that has been tailored towards quietness yet it still only cost £900 (2.6GHz, 120GB, 1GB RAM etc), and a third of that was spent on a Radeon 9800 pro. It's not hard to do, it's like lego and the different connectors can usually only go one way. After that it's just a question of tweaking XP a bit and getting the right apps, all this can be done in easily a day. You save money and it won't crash.
Something as simple as a installing a firewall, updating your virus checker daily and installing the XP updates will ensure that anyway, all of which can be scheduled and installed without any prompting. I used to get frustrated with Windows but XP is solid and learning which apps to use for automated system maintenance mean i'm at peace with my computer.
Sidez, youre just not fucking listening here. Yes, you can build a box that is cheaper - but with Apple you're not building a box. You're buying a pre-built box. It is fucking stupid and retarded and ridiculous to compare a cobbled-together box that you spend the time building and tweaking to a pre-made computer that you buy and is shipped to your house.
Of course the computer you build is gonna be cheaper.. .BECAUSE YOURE DOING THE WORK! Holy shit, is that like some great surprise to you?
And you know, some people dont like to build computers. I know I dont. My friend did it and his computer gave his problems for a long-ass time... with a pre-built box you dont have to worry about that. Yes there are plenty of wizards out there who will not have said problems but for those of us who arent (and yes, I am one, I have a Dell and I havent had to fuck with it for years and I plan to continue buying pre-built computers) its a lot easier. I can go and buy all the materials for brewing beer and brew 5 galloons of it for myself, and its not too hard... but sometimes you don't wanna brew your own beer, so you pay extra to get it already made.
Please, stop comparing the damn computer you built with parts to an Apple... it is only fair to compare Apple computers to Dells, Compaqs, etc., and when you do that, you will find that Apple computers are very reasonably priced.
Sidez, I like you, but please stop being a fucking retard and open up your eyes and see that comparing the price of the computer you built to the price of a brand new Apple shipped to your house is stupid.
So I went to the Apple store in the yuppie ass Towson Town Centre yesterday to try and get some info.
The salesman couldn't answer any questions.
Me: "What would be comprable to the PC I am using right now?"
Him: "Processor speed isn't important".
Me: "Then why are you advertising your processor speeds?"
Him: "Look what I can do with these power point slides!"
Me: "I don't care about that crap. I want you to sell me a Mac that is not a step down from my current PC.
Him: "Why don't you play with the machine! You can burn all your photos with iPictures!"
Me: Why don't you just answer my questions, and make a sale?"
Him: "I can't answer your questions."
Me: "LOL! Goodbye. Sales - one."
I like macs, but I find the college computer store, and the Mac Store in town are both full of complete idiots. It must be a job requirement.
To be fair, though, I can't recall the last time I went someplace to buy something and actually listened to what the salespeople had to say. Every place I go has people who either don't know a damn thing, or think that they know everything.Quote:
