The layout of the Bradygames guide is beautiful. Plenty of full-page images were ripped straight from Nippon Ichi's website here, including the August '03 wallpaper on page 3... :o The item tables and explanations of "good endings" are thorough.
However, La Pucelle is not as varied from board to board as Disgaea or Phantom Brave; more emphasis is placed on leveling your items and characters. Unfortunately, the guide's strategies for leveling up are a bit lacking, and for that purpose people would be better off looking at alamone's faq at gamefaqs.
...Does LP involve more or less need for power-leveling than Disgaea?
It requires the same amount of leveling without transmigration, but there aren't invinicibility tiles (Disgaea) or icy floors (Phantom Brave). So for each battle, the conditions only change based on the parameters (sleep, curse, confusion) of your opponents' special attacks. Also, if you don't like the random placement of geostreams, you usually can exit and re-enter. Anyway, I meant to say that I bought the guide but can totally ignore the entire walkthrough section. It makes for a nice artbook.
...so leveling up will take even LONGER? Does LP require I be at level 4000 or some crap in order to clear all the maps like in Disgaea?
Your party should be LV 45-60 to win the game, and you should have 1+ characters LV 500-1000 to complete everything. When I called it quits in the J version, I was ~1175. The stronger you get, the easier it is to level... like an exponential relationship. So it's up to the player.Quote:

When Prier asks her what she means, Alouette says her attire isn't appropriate for a sister of the church. Prier explains that it was Father Salade's recommendation and counters that Alouette's mini hidden under her robe is a bit extreme, too. Alouette makes the same excuse. Meanwhile, Father Salade had his back turned and was acting oblivious to the situation. Prier and Alouette turn red and angrily approach him, as he tries to change the subject...
By the way, Phantom Brave and Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne are listed as Aug 2 and Sept 1 in the Gamestop release list, respectively.

1. Disgaea got a limited production run
2. teh Hardcore gamers bought it up because they dig that stuff
3. reports of its rarity attracted the attention of ebay sellers
1 + 2 + 3 = $100 ebay prices within 5 years, methinks.

1) Step on red tiles (not the exits) on the battlefield if you see them. In chapter 1, there were about 3 or so.Quote:

so there is no going back and making it better? If i miss the ending and bonuses they're gone? If so i may start checking guides to be sure i have everything before i beat chapters.
Don't get too concerned. Just look for red tiles during battle and red dots on the world map. ;) I missed a lot in the J version... only the warp drive is a must-have.Quote:

No. By "trade-in" I mean "exchange." I'm slick like that, and the fact that my manager is cool with it helps a bunch. :)Quote:

Am I the only person who refuses to get rid of old games no matter how little I play them? I recall returning DOA:XVB the FIRST DAY it was out (worst 'game' ever). I prided myself on having not re-purchased it for a year...until I bought a NM copy off a customer this last January. Ach!Quote:

I never exchange my games, or sell them. I feel it's a huge ripoff, and even if I don't really play the games anymore, it sucks to see that much money fly out the window when I know I work hard to buy them.

You know, I tried La Pucelle in the store tonight before I settled on buying it, and I fell instantly in love with it. This game kicks Disgaea square in the crotch. Much more fun, much less aggrivating. Leveling is a pleasure, as opposed to the chore it was in Disgaea, and the combo system is one-hundred billion times better than that random crap in Disgaea. I am well pleased.
I doubt it. :pQuote:

All the cool characters from Disgaea appear in Phantom Brave after the story of that game is over. Sadly, no characters from La Pucelle appear, though there is one from the Puppet Princess series, which predates the SRPG trio.Quote:

Man, having no internet for a week (and running--on dialup) has its up sides. I've played for 11 hours since buying this game yesterday after school, and probably putting another 3 or 4 hours in tonight.
Crap, I didn't even realize this was out. Need to pick it up soon. I’m still playing through Disgaea (and loving it).
Then you'll love this one that much more.
You can probably reach the final boss if you play smart without any additional leveling at all, but you won't be able to get the 'good' endings for some chapters and fail to earn some neat prizes, though the leveling you need to get these isn't very much anyway. The game only has one optional boss and you're going to need to level to beat him, but you can do as I did and not bother.Quote:

Just for fun, here's an example of the best way to get chained miracles in Cave of Trials 3 (prereq: Warp Drive, purification power > ~100). Enter the stage when no source is lying on the outermost panels of the screen. If there is, leave & enter again. Next, bring out a character next to the base panel and end 2 consecutive turns to bring the bats away from the outside edges. Equip & de-equip your characters with the warp drive, and move them around until the streams are arranged like so:
2---------------------1
|.....................|
|.................R...|
|....R............|...|
|.B..|............|...|

|.|.G|........|...|...|
|.|.||....B...|...|...|
|.|.||....|...|...|...|
3->-4>----5---6---7---8
Characters 3 & 4 need to place > items in the lower left. Character 1 ignites the red in the upper right. Next to blow up in the chain will be red, then blue, green, green, blue. The result will be 2 white miracles followed by 2 blue-greens, then a green, and lastly a blue. 5000-7000 pts, plus low level equipped items will increase by 10 levels. :D

Wow, Red. Is there a trick like this in Phantom Brave? There's that leveling trick I found in Disgaea, this, and there's got to be one in Phantom Brave.
Speaking of Phantom Brave, I know it's coming to the States, but do we know who's bringing it over? Is it Mastiff again? I think they did s great job with the translation and voice casting.
That thing that you mentioned in your spoiler kind of pisses me off. I've never been made upset by any changes made from a Japanese translation to the US translation, but this one really bothers me. Not enough to get the J-version, mind you. :p
Nippon Ichi Software America is localizing Phantom Brave with unspecified help from Atlus USA (see http://www.atlus.com ). Ammadeau would know of more tricks to Phantom Brave than I would. The templates are fun to mess around with, though. You can rip a gold/platinum template from a retrieved item, paste it onto a random dungeon, complete the dungeon, remap the template to another dungeon or to a character to increase base stats.
After completing everything in LP (J) and getting halfway through Disgaea (US), I've felt burned out from these games. It's sooo much work! I cheated the rest of the way in Disgaea, only did enough to see the ending in PB (J), and cheated in LP (US) starting at chapter 4. *yawn*
Nippon Ichi were very kind to people in Phantom Brave, probably why they made the optional bosses extra cruel. There's a title you can apply to random dungeons that will reduce all enemy stats by 80%, meaning you can easily take on monsters much higher level and reap big exp rewards.Quote:

If you don't want to use the title cheat though, there are a lot of fun ways to level that are not only relatively quick (much quicker than leveling in Disgaea) but also extend the enjoyment of the game, least they did for me. Leveling isn't nearly important as beefing up your items though, especially when it's pretty easy to share weapons so you only need a few uber ones. Though you'll have to leveling a bottle mail to take full advantage of that.
And if you need bigger wastes of time, you can customize a whole army of different color prinnies or something, each with thier own personally designed weapon.
As for censoring in PB... well, most of the game there's no reason to touch it, though they might take the cigars out of the mouths of the bears, which would be a shame since it adds to their personality. But there are two scenes, one from the end of the story and one optional, that practically drown in blood. We're talking Mortal Kombat levels here. I could see those being cleaned up for a Teen rating.
I have an unopened Disgaea sitting here calling to me. Is there any reason I should buy and play La Pucelle first?
Imagine if they'd decide to replace the bottles of wine with pitchers of coffee in all the bar scenes... Walnut would be wired :blank: instead of drunk. :xx:Quote:

So, there are Prinnies in Phantom Brave, too? Cool. I loved the Prinnies in Disgaea.
Thanks for all the information, Amm. You're really on the ball, you are. ;)
As for the censors, all of the stuff you've mentioned, including the binge drinking, probably won't be touched. For the most part, the only thing we United Statesians miss out on are relegious references. They won't touch anything else.
Besides, Mastiff isn't doing Phantom Brave, and since all of the censorship in La Pucelle comes from them not wanting to cause a ruckus with their first high profile release, I'd say we are worrying about nothing.
Yeah, I don't think PB will be touched at all so I'm not worried about it. It's got nothing remotely religious about it this time around.
Speaking of PB, I finally got the digital art collection, though haven't had the time to look at it yet. It has every tiny scrap of art made for the game (including the animations) and hopefully some bits that weren't used. So maybe if the US version does get edited, I can help someone make a patch for it. :p
EDIT: Woof!
Hey! Got any more of those cool animated gifs? My sig is looking might bare. ;)
You know, I just got done with chapter 3 in La Pucelle, and the sprite work in this game just keeps getting better. It kind of makes me scratch my head seeing them go from this to Disgaea. Now, Disgaea had some awesome art and sprite work, but La Pucelle seems to blow it away in every reguard (except character design; I think they're about even in that area).
Incedentally, has anyone read the EGM review on this? It makes me want to puke, it's that inaccurate. Shoe says something about it being sickly sweet, and makes comments about how "it looks like a kiddy game," "the plot is for nine-year-old idiots," and other such nonsense. I really hate EGM. Always have, but this solidifies my stance on the matter.
I'll give you laughing boy since it's a character you'll recognize. :pQuote:

For animation, yeah there was a dip in Disgaea for some reason, but PB is well animated. Heck, a few animations from La Pucelle are reused in it, like Prier's prayer animation used by Marrone.
Why, thank you!
I can't wait for Phantom Brave. Though I should probably hope it gets held off for as long as it takes me to complete La Pucelle.

Is there an area like the item realm in this one?
So far I like it, but I prefer Disgaea because of the charcters and character creation. Item system and leveling up though is better in Pucelle.
I'm on the first level of Chapter 4, and the strategy guide say that I need to actually defeat Monster in order to get the Special ending, and to do so it recomend's I level, level, level. However, it never says aprox. what level I should be at in order to bust a cap in the thing's ass. Anyone (RedCo or Amm) know off the top of their heads?
Probably 20+ with some nice weapons equipped.
Personally I started leveling a bit... but quickly grew impatient. It just doesn't seem to be worth the effort for one pair of shoes and an extra 2000 gold.Quote:

i can start this soon
If you're going to do dark world much to beat the optional boss, then get the shoes. If you just want to beat the normal boss, you can safely ignore them. I never got them and I turned out okay. You can even still manage dark world without them, you'll just need to be higher levels with more monsters to use as fodder.
I ended up skipping the shoes because, as bbobb said, it really wasn't worth it. Maybe on the next play through.
 Exactly. Slaughtering your own party doesn't quite level you up fast enough for my patience. Maybe once I get some more crowd damage attacks.Quote:

SS, yes, there's a way, but it's random and it only affects the monsters in the Dark World. Every now and then, when you make a purchase form the RQ Co., they'll give you a servey (one of three), and if they serve you the correct one (Do you like to fight strong monsters: yes/no?), then the monsters get much stronger.
It's a bum deal that it only works for the monsters in the Dark World (I think that's correct, anyway), but the Dark World isn't all that hard to get to in the first place. Getting out is the problem.
Buy an item and then take the survey at the RQ shop. Once in a while, but not everytime, she'll ask you if you want more difficult monsters.Quote:

I just got to that chapter 4 dude who holds the angel shoes and he has 1,800 HP, 350+ defense, etc.!!! Oh man. I can't touch him. What am I doing wrong? Were are good places to fast level, I know I leveled a lot faster in Disgaea. I went through the dark portals a couple times and have leveled up items and have fused some to make pretty good ones. I tried killing my own teammates but that doesn't level up that well...
So what's the trick??? Damn...I suck...
Concentrate on leveling only 1-2 of your favorite characters. The others should serve as decoys or cast braveheart (if equipped with aid rods or purple bonuses). Killing your own teammates or grouped enemies with 1-hit range attacks (like holy wind or royal thunder) is easiest. After you open the cave of trials and hit LV ~50-100, things should start speeding up.
I leveled to 1183 last year only because I was really, really, really bored. It was summer and nothing else was coming out.
HOLY SHIT! I got to the tree on chap8. it's not even worth doing the extra leveling up. My highest lvl is 22, and I can't even do 1HP of dmg to his...2,000HP and 750+ def. Can I defeat the tree for the Goddess ring even after I finish chapter 8, or is it part of the chapter 8 completion bonus?
It's a completion bonus. I never got the Angel Shoes or Goddess Ring, either. If you level and combine Alandites/Gloriouses(sp?), the Goddess Ring becomes obsolete.
The real motivation to do the leveling should be (1) beat some absurd challenges and (2) see what happens when Prier becomes a Demon Overlord instead of Maiden of Light. And so the worst part of this game is when you're at the end. You've killed the LV2000 & 3x1500 monsters at the dark shrine, but a single LV700 Demon Overlord in 300 Dark World is nowhere to be found in a dozen runs. You can beg the RQ shop to make monsters tougher, but it makes no difference. :curse:
So, RedCo, Aid Staves are where I learn Braveheart from?
This game will definitely warent a second play-through. I have that feeling for this one that makes me want to complete EVERYTHING, and I don't get that feeling often.
I just went through my first Dark World--it gets hard towards the end when I lost everyone but my boxes for the last 2 worlds. Boxes pwn hard though. I still wish I had caught Pumpkin LOL when I saw him, I accidentally killed him when Pumpkin BRB attacked me. :(
I fled like 4 of the 10 maps and still got a good ending with 30,000money and a cool defensive item. Maybe I can buy some kickass weapons with the money to kill the lvl100 tree. :)
You need +5 purple bonus. 1 Aid Rod gives +4. Different characters/monsters can cast it up to 5 times on the recipient. Higher level boxes come with this skill, but their MOV is low (but could be increased by shoes).Quote:

I think those affect the rate of increase in stats during level-ups. They're not too useful unless you level them up during a purification and combine them with a weapon afterward.Quote:
