2 hours ago - I just finished what was a 26hr. long battle in Empire Earth. My Empire (The Mantheren Empire), a reletively peace loveing, mineing sort of folk was laid siege to at LEAST 15 times. My harbors were virtually indestructable seeing as how I just piled a bunch of Archer Towers (VERY potent in ALL Epochs) all around my docks and coast line. Invasion from sea was not something I was worried about. I had walls surrounding most of my peremiter, the forests helped the rest of the way... so while I didn't cover much land, I had LOTS of defenses and lots of buildings. The only problem is - I must be slow as molasses because I could hardly get going before I had a regiment of 10 Horse breathing down my neck. I hate people who rush! I fended that off fortunately - and I contined to build (at my obviously slow pace). I stayed an Epoch behind for nearly 4 hours (!!). They guy just kept blitzing me. I suppose he thought I was going to surrender (I fight to the last no matter what) because he wasn't doing much but inconveniceing me. No matter how many times he assaulted my small nation, he could never capitalize.
All I was doing was defending though (and doing so for HOURS). But muy resources slow built up from the begining of the game and I jumped two epochs in under an hour and made my first assault (which must have suprised him). The first Push was light, some horse, one hero, lots of archers (Reniassiance Age) and four catapults (and a prophet). The Prophet and the Catapults made quick work of the walls around a small outpost he had as well as the main bulidings (Town Centre and Church primarily) While my troopes stormed in triumphantly. Instead of pushing forward - I brought over some of my citizens and began building up there (walls and all). Before he could even get there, my oold town and my new one were joined and walled as well as produceing grain, gold and wood.
After that - I tried a Naval assualt - which ended up being costly. I lost a 13 Battlewship fleet to his incomprehensibly size Navy. I lost lost of Gold, Iron and Wood making those (and I lost my fishing boats that I didn't notice tagging along, thus costing me potential food) but they did weaken his Navy up which got finished off by my towers later on. Back to the drawing board.
While I was busy with my boats, he was busy hatching a plan to exact his revenge on my taking one of his town centres, churches and mines. And he was successful :/ He sent all hell after me. He had reached the Imperial Epoch (while I was wasteing my money on boats to sink) and he hammered me with Cannons. The village was raised (at the cost of his seige/amored divisions) and I was back to level 1 so to speak. I hefted defenses and bore down heavily. I made sure to make the jump from Reniassiance to Imperial ASAP (Knights aren't to good against sharpshooters). I did and began raiseing an army that would either roll right over him or choke his computer due to the amount of object on screen. The result of my second push (20 Cannons - "The Rolling Ring of Earth and Fire", 40 various horsemen, 15 sharpshoters and a bunch of medics.) was unfavorable. I did MASSIVE damage to his empire - weakining his armys and destroying much. But I failed to destory what was important. His infrastrcture. Call me a fool. This actually made up for all the losses he incured on me earlier. It was a BIG assault. Not big enough appearantly. I lost my entire military after launching that attack.
Afterward - I built up around the area that I took over, lost and took over again. Built more towers, repaired existing ones and built an even bigger push (the units were smaller, but they were spread out this time - with more sharpshooters and Prophets). It was successful in destorying a good percientage of his infastructure. I didn't bother with entire walls (those get rebuilt to fast anyway)... just towers, town centers, churches, mills, siege engines, barracks and what have you. I successfull escaped with maybe 1/5 of my original attacking squad and I sent them to a hospital behind my walls. Then PUSH 4 came. I had a partial army preconstructed (and was buliding while I was away fighing) and I sent them in for clean-up. Nothing fancy, just moveing in and kill everything that's Red. These units were joined by the remaining third after healing and flanked thier starting city. The Ports were the only thing I didn't even try to destory (why... that's suicide). I returned home - quickly began building ships and more cannons. 4 Friggates and 5 Batttle ships later, I rolled my cannons back to his capitol and began wailing at the ports (4 in all). All my cannons were eliminated by the time the boats showed up. That's when I sent the Hero and 20 armored horse at the docks. While my inadequate Navy held up the ships, my men finished off that the cannoons had started and from the other end - my suprise guests. Citizens! 20 of them actually. A boat brought them just outside where the walls of the town were - from there - two units of 10 were instructed to build two towers by the old docks. The towers went up, the boats went down and it was just loose change hunt from there as I bottled up ALL the resources and effectively gave him NO OPTION.
Wow. What a match... it wasd my first vicotry in the game too (I just stared playing 4 days ago).
We were playing a "Gigantic Map" starting with 5 citizens from Bronse Age to Imperial Age (there could be not pregression past that.. then it gets all WWII on ya). I don't think I want to play a match that long again for awhile... I had to use the bathroom a good number of times an I paid the price on a few of them. I think I caught him useing the bathroom on my first push :/ It would make sence.
