Playstation Emulation

This isn't about piracy, so don't even go there.

I've been playing some old PS games, Ridge Racer Revolution, Rage Racer, Front Mission 3 and Hogs of War.

Now, I don't own a PS2, I can only use my brothers and he's hogging it with Medal of Honor, so I have to use one of my 3 PS's.

Thing is, these games have not aged well graphically.

I remember Aurora once sent me pictures of Soul Edge for PS that he was playing on an EMU on his PC and it looked a lot better.

Any reccomendations for a EMU that will allow me to play these games, without having to look at the busted visuals?

I'm also interested in finally finding a WipeOut Special Edition when I go to England, and that won't play on my US PS.

virtual game station will produce a high res playstation image with no filters. plain jane psx graphics but pretty much has 100% compatability.

epsxe will produce hardware accelerated graphics and make the games look a helluva lot better. with epsxe you have to use several plugins (video, audio, cdrom, control) and even find a psx bios image. its not as "easy" as VGS but the results are oh so much better.

Hmmm...I'll have to look into the latter, and then the former as a backup.

yeah go for Epsxe. You'll have to change plug-ins for certain games to run correctly but it's the best.

VGS, works great and runs very much at speed or faster, but the graphics don't look all that stellar, in fact they look worse then they do on a regular PSX.

I'll pass on that mad action, then.

wipeout xl has new life in epsxe. the increased resolution is a godsend.

I'll have to try XL and 3 then, I have those but not the 3SE.

More like 75% compatibility with major sound glitches in almost any game with MIDI music. Great for it's day, wholly obsolete (unless you're computer is particularly slow). Properly configured ePSXe is more accurate and more compatible (I've not found one game that couldn't run at all. Only one with glitches major enough to make the game no longer enjoyable, and was UmJammer Lammy)

Let me help outa bit, since it's not fair to just say "it's a pain in the ass to get the righ plugins" and leave him cold.

I reccomend having 2 graphics plugins: Once for accurate emulation, and one for enhanced emulation.

For 2D games and unenhanced graphics (but excellent accuracy) use P.E.Op.S GPU 1.12 or higher. (I prefer this, because I play alot of 2D games on PSX, but it defeats your purpose)

For 3D use Pete's Direct 3D or Pete's OpenGL

For sound use Eternal SPU 1.41, and make sure you have it in smooth async mode, and use Neill's reverb engine.


I don't own a PS1. I use ePSXe for everything. It is an adequate substitute for the real thing, and veryfew games have any problems, and those that do can usually be solved by fiddling with the various settings.
