A common psychological tatic to deal with fear is to take that which frightens you and make it into something less frightening. This is most common among children when they make dragons, the boogie man, or ghosts their friends.
You'd have be nuts not to see that that's what going on here. Obviously, watching Ringu/The Ring seriously freaked somebody out.

I both love and hate the Japanese, this flash video pretty much highlights my feelings towards them. Love/Hate
Great, now that I've seen that flash I've got to see The Ring, Japanese version. I want to know how horribly cute and wrong that really was. :)
