Where would you like to live?

Alright, just a simple format. Where do you live and where would you like to live?

Currently: Frisco, TX (30-40 miles northwest of downtown Dallas)
Ideally: Crested Butte, CO (West CO, ski resort)

I'd like to say that living somewhere without snow is punishment to my system. :p

My plan is to move to Crested Butte about 10-12 years from now and own a decent sized house (2200 sq feet or so) on the outer fringes of the town. I love the idea of cold weather, lots of snow, skiing, and, for anyone who's been there, regular access to Slogar's in town. :D

I can say one thing for sure. Whatever happens, I'm not going to be staying in the Dallas area beyond 35 years old. :p

I'd like to live someplace tropical or sub tropical like one of the smaller Hawaiian islands or the Yaeyama islands. Definately someplace undeveloped with a nice beach in the Pacific. As for a house, something near the beach would be nice.

I currently live in Toledo, OH and it sucks ass. If you're a drunk this is the town for you. If you aspire to do more than just drink till you vomit and pass out then wake up and drink somemore, then you'll be glad you don't live here.

I'd like to be that crazy old guy that never goes anywhere without 2 guns, hunts bears and other big animals, makes his own moonshine and constantly says how shitty and controlling the government is.

Jester: Is Toledo considered a college town or is it a bit too big for that?

MVS: Sounds pretty cool, hehe. The nice thing is that you can now live in the middle of nowhere, and if you're still in the continental US, you can have DirecTV and satellite broadband. It's like having the best stuff in the city, without the city. :p

I think that's what I'm going to try to do when I'm 60 or something. By then, I'm sure I'll be able to get everything that a person can get in a city, without the hassles.

I don't know if I actually can hunt, I'm not a big fan of that, but I would enjoy living in the wilderness somewhere.

So long as the fucking Mothman doesn't come knocking, I'm good to go.

I wonder how many people are going to say Japan...

but i'd much rather live in a huge metropolis. looking up into the sky and seeing nothing but sky scrapers in every direction, all the great architecture, an endless amount of people in every direction, that atmosphere... i really can't describe how i feel about it, but it's one of the things that i want most in life. it's just...perfect for me.

Maybe the PI or even Australia.

Ideally, I'd like to live in the city.

I'm tired of Miami... Me and some friends always contemplate moving to Cali, but I doubt we'll ever go through with it :(

Right Now: Richmond, Texas (10 miles southwest of Houston)


Ideally: San Francisco, California - within the city itself, not the outskirts but in the deep heart of the city. I could go on for ages about why I love that city but anyone who has been there knows why, especially in comparison to a drab place like Houston, Texas. Remember that Tony Bennett song, "Left my heart in san francisco" (something like that), he wasn't kidding. I know how he feels.

I'd like someplace a bit warmer.

Or if I'm going to live someplace that snows like crazy, it would be nice to have some actual mountains around....

In contrast to Kidnemo above, I'd like to live someplace cooler. Here in the South, it's so muggy all the time.. today it's 76 freakin' degrees and humid! I hate the Gulf of Mexico. :mad:

So somewhere in the Northeast might suit me fine. I'd hate to constantly deal with snowstorms come wintertime, though.. guess you can't have it both ways. :)

Currently: I live in a small town, not to bad but not my ideal location.

Ideally: I would love to live somewhere out in a nice wooded forest area with lots of land and wildlife (especially wolves :D) somewhere up north would be great, but also with reasonable driving distance to a town.

Well ..being a citizen of NYC I can tell you that its a fine place to live...BUT..you best be sure that you can earn a decent income as the cost of living here is pretty damn high. The rent of a 1 bedroom apartment here is around $900 on average per month. The sales tax is 8.25% which I think is around the highest in the nation (maybe it IS the highest..not sure). Most people in NYC shop in either Jersey or Conneticut due to lower sales tax in both states.


In a perfect world I would actually stay in NYC providing that I have money..but I dont. I would actually love to live in a more colder climate.. maybe Maine? Seems like a nice place. I went to Montana once and thought it was actually quite beautiful. The weather is cooler and the cost of living is quite low...but ya gotta watch out for them bears! I saw a few over there..but it seemed like a nice place to live when I get older.

Me? I like New York, but the winters are a bitch. I'd love to have a place in California I can retreat to when things get rough here.

$900/mo for a one bedroom in very cheap for the NYC Metro. Unless things have changed a lot in the past 2 years you're not going to find anything like that in Manhattan or even Northern NJ or pretty much anywhere anyone would want to live, especially oming to the area for the first time. Hell it would be hard to find something that cheap in central NJ where my parents live, about an hour from Manhattan.

Also, most people from NJ shopped in Manhattan because there was a lot more selection. Screw the 3% more in tax. :p

That's true.. actually.. $900/mo for a one bedroom is typical OUTSIDE of manhattan. I live in the Bronx so 900/mo is the usual price unless you get lucky and find a nice rental in a private house or just decide to live in a shithole (South Bronx). I would never live in manhattan as its just far too expensive there. Sure thats where all the stuff is at..plus public transportation takes you where you need to go fairly quickly.

Unless you make a minimum of $500/week at your job I dont see how you can live comfortably on your own in manhattan (on anywhere else in NYC for that matter) unless you live with a roommate or just live in a shitty hood.

i live in maryland right now. near college park. i used to live in a pretty nice area in DC when i was growing up. i'd like to move back into the apartment that i used to live into. my mom still rents it out. that would be a great place for me to live. i wouldn't mind living in london for a while or even canada....maybe toronto since i have family there. i like urban city areas more than the suburbs. i find the area i live in a lil depressing. when i was younger and living in DC i could just walk down the street to the arcade or comic book shop. rent video's go grocery shopping, chill at a coffee shop....it was all right there and very easy to get to but here in maryland you need a car to get around. my car isn't always in the best of shape, not to mention paying for gas and worying about things like tires and this and that and the other. yeah, i'd like to live someplace where a car isn't a necesity.

I live in a numbingly boring yuppie-infested town half an hour west of Toronto.

I need a better job so I can remove that half hour between me and it.

Right now I live in Jersey City, NJ. Only takes me about 15-30 minutes to get to Manhattan. I love the city but where I live crime is too rampant. Having to be home before the sun goes down so I don't get shot is a huge burden.

I would love to stay in a city like NYC because my band can get more gigs that way in small bars. I really look forward to moving to Los Angeles once I get enough cash after graduating college. I'm a city boy for life.

Hell, I'd love to even have the oppertunity to visit Reykjavík someday soon. There's an enormous amount of travelling I want to experience before I begin to settle into my life. Iceland tops my list, though. :)

Everywhere I've lived in my life has been cold. I thought Pennsylvania winters were rough, so I'm dreading winter here in Boston. I'm going to get rocked. I'd love to live somewhere warm. Florida is nice... I've never been to California, but I'd like to visit it sometime. Hawaii would be optimal, but I imagine it'd be expensive to live there.

As for other countries, I don't really know. I'd like to see more of the world before I could decide where'd be best to live.

I don't think it's any worse in Boston than Pennsylvania. Many places in PA are actually much worse. With the exception of last year, Boston has been having a lot of mild winters lately.

I currently live 20 miles south of boston. I will always want to live in the city, any of the following would be fine: Boston, Montreal, Miami, San Fran, LA, Seattle, Chicago, San Diego.

yeah stormy, im in erie,pa and with the lake effect if the winter wants to be a bitch then it will, and often does. but the last 2 winters havnt been all that bad here.

I live in the Philadelphia area now...not too bad but I can't stand the damned winters here.

When I retire from the military (or get options for duty stations) I'd probably want to go somewhere in the deep south, was actually thinking Mid-west, maybe New Mexico. In my experiance (and the couple of times I've visited) the people in the South are a lot easier to get along with and are generally not as worried about the dumb things in life...

Yeh, there are some areas like the Bronx where you could live for less, but I don't see many people wanting to relocate to NYC only to live in the Bronx or NJ or something less fashionable (and even then the areas are very touch and go). If I ever move back I'd probably move to Fort Lee, the town I grew up in. It's slightly expensive but not too bad and you're just 5-10m from Manhattan and it has a cool Asian sub-culture of it's own. I still love and miss NYC but I don't miss the cost of living at all, especially since MTL has the cheapest cost of living of any major city in NA.

Bitter cold in NYC? Maybe a few times a year. If you hate cold weather maybe anything slightly cool is annoying, but you so can't classify NYC as a cold/bitter place because there is some frost now and then. Its cold compared to Texas or Morocco or some place really warm, but in the general scheme of things it is so not "cold". Visit MTL or if you want to see what cold is like. ;)

Same here. There are a billion places I want to visit. Iceland was tops on my list before I went there. I had been obsessed with it for years and finally went in '99. It was so wonderful that it exceeded my lofty expectations. Spending time there I could very much picture myself living there one day. You'll love it. :)

I like where I live now: Long Island.
But, unfortunately, I know I'll have to get the hell out to avoid that Tidal Wave from the volcano that was posted a while back... :(

Lots of interesting places...funny to see so many exact opposites in ideal location.

As far as cold goes, move to the Dakotas or Minnesota...*that's* cold. I still remember getting locked out of my house once in South Dakota only wearing sweat pants and a T-shirt...70 degrees below 0 with the wind chill. :eek:

I've lived in seattle, wa, oakland, ca and am now living a bit outside boston, ma.

oakland was awesome because of the public transportation. rent was too high, sf was higher.

seattle when I lived downtown was pretty damn awesome, definately recommend it if you can get a good paying job instead of my 2 parttime ones. not bad rent for being near the heart of the city. better still if you live a bit out side it and bus to work. public transite is pretty crappy.

here, medford. public transite is horrible. buses blahhh. i pity tourists who dont knwo where thier trying to go. nice people, cool accents. rent is pretty high but it is just outside boston.

ideal: some where warm. dont care about humidity. where the rain is warm. that would rock.

What's the transit like out there? Inside Boston, the T is great. Really, really simple, as far as subway systems go.

I have to stay near the Atlantic coast, so probably VA, or possibly the New England area.

I'm living in Hamilton, ON right now, but my days in the hammer are numbered. At the end of this month I'm moving out of my place and travelling, probably in europe somewhere.
I plan on living in Serbia at some point, but I have a bad feeling that things are gonna get messy around there when the peacekeeping force leaves Kosovo. I may just wander about for a few years, working my way around europe.

I know everyone has weird obessesions, but I'm curious: what's with yours about Iceland?

Northeastern Nevada- specifically, a city called Elko. Summer temperatures are in the 90s but without the Gulf Coastian levels of humidity you'd find in OH.

Elko's winters are rather mild with lows in the 20s or 30s. While there is around 42" snow a year, it melts fast. The yearly rainfall is around ten inches and sunny or partly sunny skies predominate. Many people consider Elko's climate ideal.

in Los Angeles, depending on where you live, it's almost the same for a one bed room. almost though, they can go as low as $500. tax is the same though.

oh, and even though i do like cold weather at times, i'll never live in a place that's usually cold or where it rains a lot. prevents you from riding a bike.

Yes, I know what youre talking about but even then its too damn cold for me. For some reason I hate the cold, absolutely hate it. Which is why I like Southern California so much and I will likely stay here. With the exception of some goofy weeks (like the one we're having now), the weather here is absolutely mint. Plus Los Angeles, for all of its gang problems, overcrowding, and ridiculous sprawl, is a fairly cool place to be. Lots of life in the city and everything's all around you, plus some sweet-ass beaches and restaurants filled with actors and actresses serving you.

And where Im at single bedroom places will run you about $1000-$1100 per month on average... ridiculous no? But there's no reason for people with a car to live around here. It's just the "inflated because of the constant student demand" price.

I may end up north (San Francisco) or south (San Diego) but overall California's pretty cool for me and I like it here. Im still not altogether comfortable but its hard to be when you've lived somewhere else for so long.

Oh yeah: Add San Fran to my list too.

aahhhh...Staten Island.. the forgotton borough. :p Is there ANYTHING there??!!! I lived in NYC my whole life and have yet to even step foot in SI. Well.. ya got the Staten Island Yankees (who get there ass handed to them by the Cyclones.. GO METS!...uh..yea..).

I dont think I could ever live in manhattan though.. its too crowded..no trees (Central Park excluded). and it can be just brutal during summer due to the pollution (and lack of trees). I'd rather just commute to Manhattan to go where I want to go and live somewhere else.

It's not any strange story. My grandmother was from Norway and I grew up being very interested in Scandinavia for that reason. The history, the languages, the culture, the politics, the food - pretty much everything about it. I read some books about Iceland when I was around HS age and became especially interested in it's history, geology, and culture. For such a small country Iceland is amazingly accomplished. Plus, for me it's the most beautiful place on Earth. :)

It was way too warm for me. The summers were unbearable because the heat/humidity.... and the winters were, as I said above, just annoying. I hate that annoying slightly cool/miserable freezing rain that aches your bones. It's much nicer having an actual winter. The winters here are lovely and crisp. I adore the snow. It's heaven. Still too warm in summer tho, but that's the nature of living in North America. I much prefer the mild summers in Northern/Central Europe.

Hehe. The only time I have ever "been to" SI was driving thru on the way from NJ to JFK airport. *roll up windows* :p

As or Manhattan, don't underestimate Central Park. It's such a wonderful place. I am totally a city boy but I really appreciate nature too and having CP is like an oasis in the concrete jungle. You can spend the whole day in the concrete jungle and then go to CP and it feels like you're a million miles away. It's one of my favourite places in NYC. :)

I never ever ever ever want to be a commuter though. My parents moved from Fort Lee to insipid Monmouth County, about an hour south. They both commute an hour to work. To me it was hell. It was so inconvenient and expensive to do anything. You waste so much of your time and money in an enviornmentally unsound car while you are stuck in bland-beyond-belief cultureless suburban hell. It was awful having to drive in traffic and tolls and pay $25 to park in Manhattan - or pay $13 to take the uncomfortable train for 1½ hours each way (and have to leave by 1.30am to catch the last train). Ugh. No commuting for me. Where I am now I can walk anywhere worthwhile in 30m- or take the métro to remote places. I don't even need a car. :)

I have no idea where I'd like to live, just not here. Somewhere in Canada, maybe. I'd have to travel a bit more before I come up with an answer.

Currently: Montréal, Québec

Ideally: Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Iceland, Finland, France, Montréal.

While there are a lot of places I'd like to live, I think eventually I will settle down in Montréal. Before settling down, I would really like to move to Europe for a while, work or study or do research there and travel. I would like to live in Eastern Europe as I have always been interested in the region ... ideally Czech or Slovakia. There is plenty of need for environmental scientists in a region plagued with many environmental problems. Iceland is also very appealing to me ... I am very interested in the geology and physical geography of the country. I would enjoy doing research there for a while, possibly study glaciers or something. Finland is interesting since they have such an important forestry industry which is something I would also like to do further research on. I'd like to spend more time in France, immerse myself in the French culture for a while and get my French perfected. Then I think I'd like to come back to my home one day. We'll see how it goes ...

I'm pretty happy with where I live now. Hawaii is a very nice place, with obscenely good weather, wonderful friendly people, and tons of really good fruit and seafood (and a lot of it is free). It's also the perfect place to go to school for a marine biology student like me.

Living in Hawaii is a little on the expensive side, but it's manageable. Unless you're very wealthy, you have to make do with less, but when you consider that the benefit is a vastly improved quality of life, it's worth it. Some people pay thousands of dollars to come here and sit in a hotel for a week, you know.

But the biggest problem with Hawaii is that a lot of people can't handle the environment. None of the islands are very big, and a lot of mainlanders get "rock fever" from the lack of space and the isolation (6 time zones away from the East Coast). Some people can't adjust to the culture properly, either.

As far as where else I'd want to live goes, I'm hoping that Canada will annex the Turks & Caicos so I can live in a similar environment but still be able to buy President's Choice. Australia sounds very appealing, but I doubt that'll happen since my girlfriend isn't a big fan of the place.

Basically anywhere that has an ocean nearby and people I like will probably do ;) Warm is good also - I've had enough of slushy winters, thanks very much!

Yes. The summers in the tri-state area are far too hot and humid, and your body just cant really adjust to the drastic change in temperature from winter to summer and vice versa. You just never feel comfortable, and the weather is always doing something that you do not expect it to. Like this summer... one day it would be ludicrously hot and humid, the next day it was miserable and raining, the next day it was hot again, the day after it was cool, then it was raining, then it was hot for three days, etc. It was absolutely impossible to feel comfortable because the shit was always changing on you.

Yea, you can get hotter summers than you do in NJ and you can get much colder winters, but not many places have the extremes that you got there. So living there and dealing can be a chore.

Which is why I love California weather so much. It's not humid, its not cold, its just right. Every so often back home there would be a day where its just right... 70-75, sunny, cool breeze, no humidity, etc. And you just walk out of your house in the morning, and say "dang this is a wonderful day"

You get that shit 4 or 5 times a week here, on average. You just cannot beat this weather with a stick. Ive been to Puerto Rico and its beautiful there but still humid. And I dont like the cold so I wouldnt like Canada or South Dakota or Illinois or whatever. Yea, there are times here when it acts kinda weird (like last week, it was a bit hotter than usual - 80-90, and now its a bit older, 60-70), but for the most part it is just perfect (for me, at least) beautiful weather.

I know how you feel. My parents aren't from Quebec originally. When they came to this country from the islands they made Montreal their home for 10+ years. They moved to Ontario right before I was born. For the next couple of years they'd regale me with their stories about their time in this strange but beautiful place. We'd visit the island periodically over the next two decades. Each time I'd promise myself that at some point in my life I'd stay for an extended period of time and learn the language.

Although, I will admit, Iceland is pretty interesting. :)

Some people say they'd like to live in Tokyo... but I sure as hell wouldn't. It's an amazing city, a great place to visit for a few days, but it's so... large and dense. You're literally a face in a crowd. (Mind you, a foreign face, but still miniscule.)

Kyoto's a much better place. Down to earth, relaxed, with a hometown feel.

That's a misconception. 99%+ of Iceland is below the Arctic Circle. So, while the days are long in summer and short in winter, it not months of sun/dark at a time.

Another misconception is the cold. In the average winter temperature is colder in Chicago than Reykjavík for example.

Now: Sweden, Luleå

Later, maybe: Canada seems nice

Currently: Queens, N.Y.

Ideally: Upstate N.Y.

Where I live at now is nice, especially compared to the bullet flying environment of my old brooklyn neighborhood. I'd love to live upstate though. I've heard Monticello ,Buffalo & Albany are all beautiful places to live. And I love winter so I would fit right in up there.

The only other place I'd consider would be Dominican Republic. It's got a great climate(except for the tropical storms),great beaches and excellent woman. But I don't think I could deal with the military all over the place with machine guns and the electricity going out all the time.

What part of Jersey are you talking about? I'm in North Jersey and on my way to the city (it's possible to drive into the city in 45 minutes but with traffic it's closer to 1 1/2 hours) I can find anything under the sun. If you can't find what your look for on Route 17 or Route 4 it's because the stores are closed. And considering the added tax and cost of just getting into the city, no one is going to go to the city exclusivly to buy shit.

And for the record last winter was fucking brutal. Last winter wasn't much though.

Personally, if I were rich and didn't have to work I'd love to live in Florence.
I absolutely loved the town when I was there. Beautiful city with amazing art everywhere.

Pretty much anywhere. If you wanted to buy things like import CDs or nice clothes you'd have to go to the city. When I was going to uni I'd take the stupid train 1½ hours each way just to buy records. Yikes. There are a billion stores in NoNJ on Rte 17/Rte 4 (believe me I know... and the traffic getting there is worse than going thru the Lincoln Tunnel). It's good for 'chain stores' and the like, but there is still a reason why Manhattan is the shit. At least for some people. If you say "no-one" you'd be very very very wrong. You just need to meet more people, possibly ones that don't shop at the Gap. :p

Also, for the record, where in NoNJ does it take 45m to get to Manhattan?! From my parents house in Monmouth County it would take me 45m in no traffic (ie. at 3am) to get to Manhattan and 1-2 w/traffic (parkway-turnpike-tunnel). Departing from where I grew up in Fort Lee it'd take literally 5-10 minutes w/no traffic or 30m in light traffic (gwb or lincoln tunnel). :confused:

I live in Morris County and it takes 35-45 minutes to get to NYC by car, more during traffic but really there's only traffic once a day, and thats in the morning. When I was going to school in Newark it would take maybe 15 minutes.

That sounds about right from Morris Co. From Bergen or Hudson co, it's even easier because you don't need to take any highways to get to a crossing. Like you say, the traffic is not usually a problem except in the am - in the afternoon and evening it's all going the other way - except on weekends (the traffic on rte17 and rte4 is always murder tho'. :p). The real problem is parking in the city. Metres are too short, you pay insane amounts for a garage, or you park somewhere dodgy like the Bowrey and take the subway. Bleh. :\

I'd love to live in San Francisco. My girlfriend goes to school there, so I visit frequently, and it's just the ultimate city ever. Big buildings, busy, narrow streets, crazy people everywhere, a black man tap dancing downtown, and awesome public transportation.

I'd also like to live in Seattle again someday (I just moved from Seattle to Sacramento in July). It's a pretty nice city, despite the rain. Or maybe because of the rain. It's so clean, and soooooo damned green everywhere. Everywhere there's not bulidings, of course. Good people there, too.

Ideally: San Jose, CA. Being in the heart of Silicon Valley, there's the permanent feeling that something big and great is always being worked on, and it's right 'round the corner. In addition, the weather is perfect, the place has no culture, and is the safest metropolis in the country... perfect for a white-collar suburbanite.

I'd still like to try New Zealand, Texas, and New York though. Sounds interesting, those.

I live about 2 miles off of Rt. 17. It's possible to do it as you said late at night and on Sundays. With nothing open on 17 because of the blue light law there's practically no one on it on Sundays. It took me 1 1/2 hours to get to work when I was working in the city. Long commutes suck ass. I'd leave at 8 am, get in at 930, leave at 6 and get back at 7:30. Long fucking day. It's not that hard to find what you need when you're in Bergen County. Not everyone goes to the Gap.

In a Clancy book I read (Red Storm Rising) the sun would never go completely down in Iceland, it would become almost dark but not all the way.


After thinking about it, Trinidad would be a nice place to live, I love the hot weather and all the people are pretty cool. Though I'm pretty sure I'll never find my way down there permenantly.

I would love to live in Spain. I went there once sightseeing for a week, and it was beautiful. The air was fresh, the people aren't allowed to litter, the streets are cobblestone and you have to walk, and that everything is pretty cheap there. The only bad things are the gypsies, not the ooh-I-think-you-are-so-exotic gypsies....these ones are old and will rob you and gut your ass. They travel in packs, and you never know where you will find them. The tour guides told us the schemes that the gyps would come up with, pretending to be tourists so they could go back to the tour bus and steal cameras, and whatever else they could find. And an event that happened with us, is when this stupid girl, who was warned not to wear any flashy or easily grab-able bags or purses, did. And while we were all headed out for late night omelettes and drinks, we were attacked by gypsies who tried to grab her bag, and when yelled at and almost hit, a whole bunch of other gyps came out of nowhere from other alleyways. The situation was alleviated by the fact that we made a commotion by yelling for the police. Well, I guess...what city isn't a little dangerous? Maybe New York is a better choice....at least you know you might be jumped at all times.

You just need to realise that some people look for different things. Maybe everything you and your friends and family is available there, but plenty of people do a lot of shopping in Manhattan, obviously. It's quite famous for that .... I'm not saying it to be negitive either. I loved growing up in Bergen County. It's a great place and the very best part of NJ in my opinion. :)

In the north it's somewhat like that. But in Reykjavík you get a nighttime even in summer. I was there in August and you'd have a few hours of night a night. It was really cool because I saw the Aurora Borealis for the first time in my life. :)

Hey, I've got plenty of time between that time and now (about 6 years)
due to the fact that I plan to attend two game programming colleges (one to get one hell of a cram session and the other to get an even better Nintendo endorsed 4 year cram session)

So let's just say I have plenty of time to brush up on my Japanese.

And I will be one hell of a programmer (actually, top of my C++ class at the moment... but it is only introductory, unfortunately...), and even if I can't find a job, I could open an independant development company in either Japan or the US.

nakkato: I would start with 2D programming and use C. I'm currently planning on making a 2D sidescroller (maybe a level or two, see where it takes me). It's so hard. I'm going to school for design right now, and plan to go for 3D animation after this. Starting up your own company is pointless. Publishers are notorious for being picky and someone with no creds under his belt will get 0% of their time.
