applying for a job at a videogame store

A videogame store is opening in my town, so I'm gonna try and get a job there!

I was thinking of attatching something to my resume like this:

I have extensive experience and knowledge of computer and videogames accumulated over 15 years of playing them. I am up to date with all of the industry’s news, and I have a vast amount of knowledge of game titles for all current platforms (and many older platforms too). I’m very passionate about games, so I naturally know what other hardcore gamers are after, yet I’m also in touch with what the casual gamer is playing and am able to address their needs as well. I am familiar with obscure consoles and games from all time periods, and I have friends in the videogame journalism industry.

That sounds good man, more or less what I put on my resumes to Babbage's and EB back in the day.

Really, though, all you have to show them is that you're honest, won't steal shit, and won't spend ALL day slacking off and goofing around, and usually that's good enough for most VG store managers :)

Hardcore things doesn't matter too much to them I think, of course it depends on what kind of vg shop it is. Do you have any experience working at other stores?

A bit, while it's good to know a lot about past stuff and obscure games it's usually not of such a big value to push it to far when you're applying for the jobb.
It's more important to be in touch with casual gamers and you shouldn't say "also" since then they might think that they got some kind geek on their hands that will push niche games that the customers will just end up returning.

The only thing I've gained with my knowledge so far is that I have three or four returning dorks that thinks I'm their friend and occupies the front of the counter so that real customers can't get through and a good idea of what that used Megadrive is worth.

I honestly don't think extensive videogame knowledge does any good when applying there. Shit, just look at some of the sorry asses that work in the stores to begin with. I imagine so long as you wash your ass regularly, know how to ring a register and have a rudimentary knowledge of what you're selling , you stand a chance.

It doesn't really matter how much you know about videogames, although it obviously doesn't hurt as far as knowing the releases and being able to give customers what they want when they ask vague questions about that game with the man that their son wants.

Nick (another one), Isaac and I are the only ones at our store that know what we're talking about. The other employees don't even own a game system.

There really are no skills that they look for, except maybe retail experience. As long as you're willing to follow directions and don't have attitude problems, you should be fine. Helps to know the people, but you said this is a new store, right?

say you know everything theyre is to know and they can quiz you, might intimidate them until they really ask you something...
