For example, take Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. He has longer hair, but it looks well groomed and cared for. So, he's okay. But then you get your typical D&D dork who hasn't seen a pair of hair clippers in years, where their hair is just a long, ugly mess.
It isn't hard to make oneself look halfway-presentable. And, like it or not, when you take a bit more care of yourself, people treat you differently, and you feel differently about yourself. I used to be there - I used to be "alternative" and think looks didn't matter and say piss off to any good who wouldn't accept me for who I was just because I might be dressed like a homeless bum. Then, however, I decided to actually put some effort into how I look and dress, and damnit if it isn't a far better feeling.
