Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

Wow! Has anyone else played this game? I can't believe how amazing this game is so far. It is in serious contention for game of the year for me and that's saying something. There has been a ton of great games this year(not to mention, just in Nov) and this easily sits at the top with the best of them. So, what does everyone else think? I'd hate for this game to go unnoticed.

P.S. If there already is a thread about this, sorry. I searched manually through the 1st 15 pages and I didn't see one and we all know how the search feature works these days.

It looks awesome, but it came out in the WORST possible time, when it's going to get overlooked by a ton of other high profile games.

I want it, I really do, but I can't help but wonder how long it'll take for stores to start putting this one on sale.

I know what you mean. I just got done beating Legacy of Kain(my favorite series ever) and Prince of Persia and so far I think this is a much better game. At this point(I'm only a few hours in) it is out Zeldaing Zelda WW.

I have it havent had much time to play it im like 3 maybe 4 hours into it and i quite like it alot and its a damn nice looking game too

i was psyched for the game since i first saw shots of it and ive been really happy with it

just wish i had some more free time to put into it

I hope it sells at least decently well cause the game deserves too

I can't believe that no one else is playing this. What a shame. They are really missing out. Anyone who digs a Zelda style adventure would really love this game.

I played the demo. Seemed very solid but not OMFGBUYNOW or anything. I'd say this is a game that I'd pick up when it's cheaper but I know I'll just forget about it and never will.

I'm digging it. I only played the demo, but I'll be checking the whole game out in the near future.

The little bit I've seen of it, which is admittedly not much, kinda gives off a Maximo-ish vibe.

I'll give it a rental one of these days, or maybe track down a demo. Like others have said, this came out at a less than optimum-time to garner itself attention.

its Really, Really good.. but the ending is sub par.. i have a feeling that if you fully complete it, the ending is better.... But yes, very kick ass game.. it kinda reminded me of Zelda 64... with Ankh's instead of hearts (you get a full new one from bosses, and have to collect 4 partials to get a full) and other elements. Great game.. and the puzzles are pretty hard to.

Target already has it on sale for 29.88 this week, so unless 30 dollars is the MSRP, I expect it to hit 20 shortly after christmas.

Maybe if you had something constructive or substantial to say about the game other than empty praise his and my opinion of your post might have been different. Maybe you should have mentioned why it makes you fantasize about having sex with Diff's mom or something.

The demo was pretty good, and the game looks very interesting. Once dj is done with Prince of Persia, we might rent this one.

As far as settings and atmosphere go, wouldn't it be kind of odd to go from one egyptian/desert type setting to another even if they are different in tone?

If being a very Zelda style game done very well doesn't give you an idea of the game then I guess you have a point. The puzzles are very creative, there is some nice humor involved when you play as the mummy, the areas are huge with a lot to explore and sidequest to do. You know, a very Zelda like game.

I have to say i love the enviornments in this game the texturing work is just fucking gorgeous

I thought it was going to be a GC, PS2 only release but I saw the X-Box version on sale at EB. Anyone do the comparisons between the version yet?

they added the Xbox version a couple months before it came out

Every site that I read that reviewed all 3 said the GC was the superior version, just barely eeking out the XBOX version. The PS2 version suffers from some slowdown. The GC does 480p and the XBOX does 720p from what I've read. Yet they say the GC version looks a little better.

Well I picked it up thanx to this thread, and the first thing I'll say is at first I was wondering what the fuck you guys were going on about but honestly it doesn't all come together fully until you get to control and complete the mummys first quest. Now I can't wait to see what comes up next. And I have to give a nod to the assignment interface. The next Zelda's should use it, it's all real time and no need to pause... way better. One thing that bugged me is the lack of auto save, I mean the moment you complete a mummy segment it should save since it's always on the same dedicated file so no worry overwriting an important save. I lost some progress moving on to the next bit with sphinx and dying only to realize I never got the chance to save the progress unless I had backtracked which I wasn't in the mood for since I figured a save would be nearby.

question for nigel if youve run into this or anyone else playing it

after the first time you see horus talking to set as the mummy, in sets big hall room after that your supposed to go through a door upstairs and theres a save statue right next to it
i you save your game there after the conversation and then come back to the game the door is locked and there seems to be no way to open it thus your stuck for ever and need to restart your game

this has happened to me twice now the first time i thought ok thats weird i must have fucked something up and started over again but now its happened again and im really pissed off cause i dont feel like playing through those first parts over for a 3rd time

any ideas how to get that door to open?

When I was doing some looking around for info on Sphinx I saw exactly what you described and it said that it was a glitch that only happened if you turned it off after that save and before the next one. I'm not sure if the way I described was exactly right but I'm sure it is exactly where you are talking about. I'll see if I can find that info again and post if for you. Luckily I didn't have that happen to me.

seems its a known bug with no solution

so im stucking having to start all over again and you can not save during that time with the mummy bassicaly have to play through that part as the mummy with out ever saving and then saving once you play as sphinx again

im really fucking pissed off about having to play through this a 3rd time

youd think something like this they would catch

The only glitcth I've encountered so far is at the beginning when you use the little critters to cut the wires holding the big boulder. Once the boulder was free it started rolling forward and a bit before the lava pit it rolled on the spot for eternity. I don't know what I did to make it screw up like that but I had to start over, luckily it was only the beginning. I hope I don't run into any other glitches.

Well I finished this game on the weekend. The game had some good puzzles, although I didn't like the fact that they switched to the mummy for you. If they make a sequel you should figure out when it's time to use him. The last boss was pretty easy, first try and he was down for the count. Once you beat the game thats it though, I couldn't see myself playing this again so I traded it in for I-Ninja.

Worth the one play through for puzzle/quest/adventure fans.

im at the part when you have to run the obsticle course with sphinx. tried it once, was waaaaaaay off the time and have yet to pick it back up again :( maybe someday.

Yeah you don't have to do that to finish the game though so if it's the only thing stopping you I say fuck it and move on.

Just in case anyone else is waiting, this game has FINALLY dropped in price to 19.99 for xbox and ps2 versions, on ebgames.com. Not sure if it's the same for all stores or the B&M, though.

note, the gc version is also 19.99, so sales +1for this little frosty.

you also get a t-shirt with it (i believe only ps2 and Xbox though)

It is a nasty glitch but I didn't have it happen to me. The main problem I have with this game is that you can't alternate your save file. Leaving you no option but to overwrite your last save point making it a real pisser if you do hit the glitch or do what I did which is even worse. I was well past the glitch point and in my haste when I loaded it up one day I was just pushing the button as fast as I could to get it started. Well, the problem is that if you do that it takes you into "new game" instead of "load game" and I hit the file that I had been playing on and I overwrote it. Just to let you know how great this game is, I started over and played it to completion. Bottom line is, the glitch sucks! The save system sucks! The game is so good you have to play it anyway. I would put money on it being at least as good as any game you ever spent $20 on.

yeah if it didnt have that save system i dont think i would have run into the glitch

I hope there is a sequel. I don't know how well it sold. I can't imagine very well if it is down to $20.

I could have sworn there was an interview not to long ago with eurocom the developers who said they made enough from other jobs to gurantee this would get a sequel

Maximo sold the most of it's copies when it was 10-20 bucks, and Capcom decided to make a sequel, so anything is possible.

But how is Maximo 2 even doing? For a game that got such critical acclaim on TNL, nobody seemed to pick up Maximo 2, so maybe this logic is flawed?

The consumer is only partly to blame for waiting; game prices are getting slashed quicker and quicker everyday, with titles that came out at christmas already 20 bucks. Everytime a consumer waits for a price drop, and there is one, it just instills in them that "If I wait on the not so popular games, they'll drop price before I know it".

Case in point, look at I-Ninja, Armed and Dangerous, XIII, Sphinx, Beyond Good and Evil... and this is just looking at games released close to christmas that have already dropped price by late Jan. Like Maximo 2, all these games are sleeper hits, so of course people would wait for a price drop, since the trend shows it.

There's even high profile games like PGR 2 and Deus Ex 2 that are on sale for less than 40 also, at the moment, so good things come to those who wait.

I can just as easily blame stores like EB and Gamestop, because both of the ones in my area NEVER pushed this game at all, putting the big name releases over it, like PGR 2.

You have to remember, the people on this board, the people that post at GameFAQ's that know about games, it's such a small small small percentage of who's buying games for the next gen systems. Hell, most of them didn't even know about BG&E, and when they go into a local EB, they get hammered about the new PGR 2 or GTA Double Pack, which they probably already knew about, being casual gamers.

I still stand by the fact that BG&E didn't do well, just because Ubisoft tried to push it out during Christmas, and it got overshadowed by all the big names that came out at the same time. Hell, same thing happened to alot of games, including Sphinx.

This is true, and just look at Best Buy. New games usually come out alot cheaper than at EB or Gamestop, or come with a 10 dollar gift card.

DVD's and CD's have dropped in price alot the last few years (espically new ones, only 9.99 for a new CD on the week of release now, depending on the sale), and I wish the same thing would start to happen with games.

I agree with you, Roufuss. I was the only employee at my GameStop to push BG&E, and my coworkers would laugh at me every time I did so. But everytime I sold a copy, the customers would tell me that I did good by them on the return visit.

I'm sure it would have been the same way with Sphinx. The reason I didn't buy it at full price is because I had too much on my plate, and as much as it pains me to say this, Sphinx wasn't at the top of the list.

But now, at an unexpected price point, I HAVE to buy it. I'll be doing so this evening.

That's what I was talking about earlier, so many other higher profile games come out and people just tend to gravitate towards those first, because they've been hyped up for so long.

and i started playing again last night thanks to dyomides encouragement :D i absolutely HATE capturing things. why can i not control the camerawhile controlling the bugs? oh because im using that analog stick to move the bug in the first place. wouldt be so bad it the camera didnt want to always stick right behind sphinx effectively cutting off what i want to catch!

Yeah I admit that the camera system once you try to catch things isn't too effective but thankfully you really don't have to catch much unless you really want to get everything in the game. A cool trick I use against some of the bigger, nastier enemies is get them to the blinking yellow state and instead of risking damage by going for the final blow I just capture the fuckers no matter how many I already have.

I just started it up, and I'm loving it. I'm extremely disappointed in the lack of voice acting, though. Sorely.

I love the atmousphere, the character designs are freaking great, the animation is excellent, and the control is tight. Truely this is a platformer done right. I just got the part where the Mummy becomes the Mummy, and now I assume I'll have to go collecting the "Soul Jars" in order to save his lanky ass. I'm down with that.

Funny that Sphinx and Horus seem to be working for Imhotep . . . you know, the real cursed mummy. Heh. You'd think the guys at Eurocom would've stuck him with a better name, and not that of an undead, cursed, power-hungry demi-god who seeks the destruction and subjegation of the human race. Oh well. He seems like a nice guy to me, if a bit demanding and domineering. ;)

game looks so much better on my new tv. night and day just like BG&E did.

Picked this up yesterday. Very very well-done and enjoyable. Chalk up another high-quality victim of the annual holiday crush.
