whats wrong with my dsl?

now keep in mind ive had it before and have gotten 80k/sec downloads on the bronze package (768d/128u) on this line. so ive recently gotten it again after some time away. going thru verizon sice the parents get the 1.5m down/128 up for only $30 a month. my speed tests show a whopping 326 down 26 up. thats ISDN speed. now the first call to tech support said i was "good to go" when i first got the modem. after 2 weeks they finally decided they didnt hook up the jumpers at the CO. so 2 days ago i had it running and got around to calling today because of the really shitty speeds. the first guy said my line didnt qualify for dsl....yet they test the lines before sending out equiptment. fuck him. i told him to eat shit and die and hung up. the next guy had me on the phone for 2 hours......yes. one hour trying his best to troubleshoot another 45 minutes getting ahold of the CO. finally they get on the line. they say "everything is great on our end you must have a virus". i scanned....didnt have any (i reformat once a month). so then they said they couldn't do anything for me. it's "on my end" WHAT THE FLYING FUCK!? so what the hell do i do? spend the extra $25 for roadrunner (where they send somebody to hook it up and make SURE its working right) or what? this is complete bullshit. and i have clean boots with nothing running in the background.

Your problem is Verizon sucks. Go with Earthlink. They will use Roadrunner's lines, and you aren't paying Time Warner directly. Same service, better support.

I use SBC DSL and haven't had any problems other than the ocasional blackout of service (only happened a couple of times anf or a few hours each time). If they're in you're area they're running a deal where you can get service for $26 a month for the first year if you sign up online.

I get 80k DLs pretty consistantly.

If they don't want to help you, don't give them your money. Switch to a different provider.

Earthlink puts too much shit on your computer, I would go with Comcast (or whatever cable provider you have in your area).

I'm thinking about going for that deal, but I have a feeling, my phone lines don't qualify (Anyway to find out before hand?).

Check the connection between the wall and the modem, make sure it's solidly connected. If it is, try swapping out telephone cords and see if that makes a difference. If this is a lineshare (DSL and phone over the same line), make sure all of your filters are plugged in for the phones. Go over all the telephone outlets for that number and make sure there's nothing sticking into the socket that's not supposed to be there.

If everything looks good, call Verizon back up.

Ask for a Tier 2 or Tier 3 tech immediately. Ask them what kind of card you're on (standard ADSL or G.Lite). If they tell you ADSL, ask them to:
-Change your connection type from fast to interleave
-Increase the max-delay on both upstream and downstream
-Adjust the minimum margin down and up to 6

If they say you're on Glite
-Adjust the min margin down and up to 6
-Increase max delay (usually from 4 to 16 on both ADSL and G.lite)


To be perfectly honest, since you have such a slow upstream (26kbps), it sounds like a problem with wiring at your house (filters, cable coiled up in the attic, something in the socket, poor termination at the dmarc [where the line comes into your house], or a half ringer at the dmarc). Some are within your control, but anything I mentioned with the dmarc really isn't, and the wiring in your house isn't in your control unless you hire a technician.

All of this leads to my official recommendation: DSL sucks, get a cable modem.

Verizon sucks, my Road Runner is leagues faster and the support rocks..

Forgot to mention...if you have a filter or a surge protector between the wall and your DSL modem, kick yourself in the ass.

You have a shitty service. I have SBC DSL and get download speeds around 356Kbps to 512Kbps. If anything, I'd ask how far away you are from the nearest hub station. If it's over a couple of miles, this may be your problem.

A cable coiled up in the ceiling is'nt going to be a big factor. I know, I install communication cableing for a living. If the termination at the D-Mark is a factor, he would probably notice bad reception while using the phone. As long as he has Cat. 3 compliant phone cables within his home, he should be fine. The distance from his home to the nearest hub station is probably a bigger factor.
