Japanese Goths kick the shit out of US Goths

I was looking around the net for a red men's dress coat (I want to dress like Lupin to agrivate my little sister) and found this . What I am talking about is way on down there, past the school girls and the cosplay mags.

That is so much cooler and darker than what we call Goth in the US. No fat chicks with black lipstick to be had. However, in a few shots, you see little kids. I so pitty anyone who has to grow up and have any sort of fashion put on them. Little kids are supose to have tshirts with heman on them, not look like your grandmothers old china dolls.

This reminds me of the one goth kid in the music scene back at home. A ton of the kids in my hometown go to hardcore shows on the weekends, and there's this guy... nobody I know knows him, but he's really tall and thin, always wearing all black and at least one article of fishnet clothing. He's got a trenchcoat and boots, and usually has his hair (black, of course) gelled up in some ridiculous fashion, and he has his own boombox he carries around. I've always wanted to ask him if he wanted to go listen to some Sisters of Mercy and brood, but I think he might stab me.

I'm guessing we're not refering to this, are we?

j/k, I got no problem with goths. Some of 'em are alright.

By "beat the shit out of," you really mean "look even more ridiculous than," right?

The whole Gothic Lolita look may be cool for people that jerk off to pictures of overdressed French maids, but for me it's garish and ugly (and in some ways creepy). Most Goth fasion can't seem to tell the difference between what's idiotic and what isn't.

But I'm probably not the best person to ask, since I can't view the whole "goth" culture as anything more than a joke. I have yet to meet a goth that isn't an asshole, a tool, or someone whose obsession with the color black approaches the obscene...

It might be a bit more tolerable if most of these people didn't take themselves so damn seriously. It's a bit like the Valley Girls of the underground: they take themselves so seriously, yet they act so ridiculous that everybody except themselves is laughing at them.

Oh man, that Japanese goth magazine is cool. I'd love to order that but unfortunately am strapped for cash at the moment. That's cool to see they have a good deal of respect for the gothic subculture in Japan, not that I'm really suprised. I don't much about it over there except Malice Mizer. My local goth club regularly does play obscure and foreign gothic/industrial music and I'll have to put in a request there when I go next Wednesday. We're also going to have a rather big gathering on December 13th called Christmas Nightmare and I'm hoping to have the money to attend.

Well, first, Japanese "goths" and American "goths" aren't the same kind of people. The Japanese version isn't the whiny, self-loathing, live in the dark kind of lifestyle like many of ours are. The Japanese side is more about the clothing and style and less about a "lifestyle."

All of the Goths and Lolis that I met were really nice people who weren't trying to be something that they aren't, they just enjoyed wearing interesting clothing and seeing what kinds of outfits they could put together or make. So, you know, a few Westerners want to think they're idiots and their clothing is gay, I'm sure their lifes will continue on as normal.

Here's some pics from a party that I went to in Kobe. Most of the girls are more on the Lolita side of things, but there are some Goths in the mix.

Most of the goths I know aren't the whiny, self-loathing types either. That's just a stereotype. Most goths really enjoy themselves. My best friend is one of the "leaders" of the local gothic community here (she's put on shows, has her own CD, was co-founder of a big annual gothic arts festival... ah, just go to her site here.) and she's one of the most perkiest people I've ever met. Really. Honestly.

One of the guys at work, his buddy runs a goth bar/club in Toronto.

I go there once in a while, but I just dress normally and no one really cares. Just have a few beers, and sit back enjoying the dark atmosphere and tunes.

Most people there are fairly normal, but there are a few people who are totally mental. Any sorta place you go is gonna have mental people, just of different types.


The place does have a cool t-shirt though. Wear it sometimes, too.

Yeah, yeah. What can I say? I don't dress goth, and I certainly don't like the whiney "I'm so goth I should be dead" bull-crap, but the culture intrigues me, and it's where I came from. My "roots," so to speak. I didn't fit in with anyone else in high school, mostly because I didn't want to, so I associated with the goths.

From shidoshi's description of the Japanese goth, I think I'd have a good time with them. I don't dig whining, and as far as doshi says, Japanese goths don't do that. Neat.

The Gothic Lolita Bible is awesome, it's by far worth the $20 (more or less) they stick on it. I've got a few- but just to let you know, unless you're into sewing or crossdressing, their isnt a lot for guys in there. It's like a big catalog of mostly clothes, and the majority of it isn't model shots, but you get Mana and Psycho le Cemu etc spreads...It comes with STICKERS however, theres this awesome sticker of an eyeball that I have on a bracelet and its awesome. Also, in one issue i have, there's this recipe for tomato soup and they have all these little pieces of tofu in it shaped like crosses. I have a pic scanned in here somewhere, but i cant find it. It's kinda amusing, cause there's these ads like "HEY GIRLS! BE GOTHIC AND LOLITA!"
and loooooots of ads for skin whitening cream. D=

It's a crime that they are charging $24 or so for those books. Shelf price in Japan is only like Y1300, and even with the crap exchange rate we have now that only comes to around $12. A $10 premium on those books is a bit much, IMHO. I wish they weren't so expensive to order here, or I wish they didn't come out so often, one of the two - I bought them all through vol. 8, but since getting back in June, two more volumes have already come out.

For anybody who wants to get a better look at GothLoli stuff, I'd first suggest trying to get ahold of an issue of Kera magazine. It's cheaper, it's probably easier to find, and it'll give you not only some EGL stuff, but also Japanese "punk" and other interesting fashion.

Kera is cool, but the biggest thing I like about GLB is the sewing stuff. They make it so OMG you don't have to know japanesesese to work out the patterns.

also doshi, do you know of any Japanese mags that are punk only? Not really the lolita stuff but just punk stuff? I haven't been able to find any...

Well, I was recommending for the people who want to know what EGL is and see some examples of it. For those kinds of people, I doubt they'll be looking for sewing patters and stuff. *heh* Once you decide that you like EGL, then I'd say it is a good time to invest in one of the bibles. Kera's a good start for those new to EGL, or Japanese fashion in general.

Hmm.. that I'm not too sure on. Outside of EGL, my fashion tastes are more along the lines of Gals stuff. Plus, part of the problem (?) is that there are just so many magazines that come out in Japan. It's wonderful when you're over there and you can browse at a bookstore to see what you like, but when trying to order from an import shop, it can be overwhelming. Plus, most import shops never begin to get close to carrying everything that's out there.

haha yeah, you're right! I mean, i love looking at all the EGL girls and all, but I like seeing a mix of guys and girls, and even though theres some in GLB, you usually cant tell if it's a guy or a girl anyway!!!

but thanks anyway, i feel ya....I can only pick up Arena 37 once in awhile, *If* (and that's a BIG if) Kinokuniya happens to have a smashed copy lying in back. and that's a pretty popular j-rock mag....so....well, guess I have another thing to look for when i take a trip to the orient one of these days....ho hum
