X-Men vs Street Fighter on Sega Saturn or Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on Sega Dreamcast?

X-Men vs Street Fighter was a technical benchmark for the Sega Saturn back in '97. It was the closest translation yet achieved on a 32-bit home console at the time. The arcade version and the Saturn version were near-identical (and while you've heard that phrase for years to describe arcade-to-home ports since Street Fighter 2 on SNES, for the 1st time, this time it was the real deal), and the load time was near-unnoticeable. It's because of the superb translation Capcom achieved that this game has aged gracefully and can still stand up to the likes of Dreamcast titles like Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK 2, etc. without looking cheap and dated.
Comparing the game to Marvel vs Capcom 2, XvSF has larger, less pixelated characters, a more enjoyable soundtrack, and a 6-button setup (compared to MvC2's 4-button attack and 2 Assist button setup). I also feel the artwork and presentation is superior to MvC2. Marvel vs Capcom 2 has 56 characters for you to mess around with (as opposed to XvSF's 17), a training session mode, a Shop mode that gives you incentive to play the game until you collect every character/stage, and every character that has appeared in Capcom's Marvel fighting games is included in this game.
While I guess you can conclude that you get more bang for your buck with MvC2, I have always liked playing XvSF much more. However, I know most of the advanced tricks in XvSF, and I never bothered to look into the advanced stuff in MvC2, so maybe I'm not qualified to form a fair opinion of MvC2.
Overall, I'd say you should try to get both games because they are equally in short supply for their respective home systems. However, XvSF for Sega Saturn is even more obscure these days, so I recommend snatching the game up as soon as possible. At least you can find a working MvC2 cabinet at most arcades. Even if you find XvSF in the arcades, I bet the 1-player side of the controls will be broken somehow :p
I've always thought that Marvel vs Capcom 2 left the realm of the fighting game and moved into something completely new (at least when you're skilled at it) - it looks like it plays more like a weird fast-action strategy game. A lot of the strategies in the game seem to work the same way no matter who you're playing - more an issue of what strategy you pick and how well you execute it (which is a big deal).
I enjoy playing X vs SF more, by far.
SNk vs Capcom on NGPC. Oh, wait, that wasn't a choice...
Since I'm not big into fighters, I get far more fun out of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.
I enjoy the craziness of MvC2, but I'm also not a huge fighter fan. 200-hit combos make me happy...
Taito (awesome avatar, Blade of the Immortal rocks) has a good point. At the time, XmenvsSF on Saturn was amazing. MvsC2 just didn't have that revolutionary feel to it when it was released on DC. I have both, but I haven't played XvsSF in years becuase I lack a converter for my Saturn. Hell, I'd take XmenvsSF over MvsC2 just because of MvsC2's music.
I guess Im not the only one who thinks Jazz music has no place in fighting games.Quote:

I would say go with MvsC2 myself. There is just soooo much there, and its really really fun to play. XvsSF is fun and all, but feels a little dated if you ask me. MvsC2 is jam packed with lots of varied characters, which gives you lots to experimant with. I think in the end MvsC2 has more replay value, thus a better purchase.
I prefer Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 over part 2.
And was it X-Men vs Street Fighter or Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter that didn't have that shadow version of nash, because that was my fave.
Easily X-Men Vs. Street Fighter. MvC2 was crap.
If you want to play the game in a "I want to fight my friends at this" kind of way, and you can't find Marvel VS Capcom 1 for DC, get X-Men VS Street Fighter. If you just want to see big, ugly sprites fly around and you like fighting games that don't require skill, get MVC2.
Yes I really hate MVC2. At competetive levels all it turns into is who can pull off their corner trap first. Its about as broken of a game as T4.....Oh yeah...**Goes to make a topic**
To be fair, XvSF was absolutely broken as well, but after the shock value of seeing your favorite Street Fighter Alpha characters with supercharged attacks, the flawed engine (which yielded a plethora of glitches and unfair rules in the fighting engine) is what provided the game's fun and longevity in my eyes.Quote:

I agree. MvC2 just because both games are broken at a competetive level anyway, so at least MvC2 is more 'fun' to just screw around with.
I really liked Nintendo's VS. games. Oh wait, you meant Capcom's VS. games, well I'm not a big fan of them, but I liked Marvel vs. Capcom 2 due to the insane amount of characters from various games and comics featured.
Oh yeah, XvsSF was broken as well but not everyone had infinites and corner trapping didn't really exist left.
I do remember that everyone had an infinite on Juggernaut though
I prefer XvsSF, the problem is that after playing it for a while, I tend to get bored of choices, as there aren't too many there seeing as how it takes two characters for each selection. But that's the only problem I have with it, it's my favorite of the "Versus".
MvC2 is hella fun for screwing around, and has a great list of characters, but is no way at all to be considered a serious fighter in the slightest. But on that level, I love it. I also seem to be the only player in the world who enjoyed the MvC2 music just because it so contradicted what was going on on-screen, it made the game twice as hilarious and funky. If it had a normal fighting game soundtrack, I doubt I even would've noticed, I sure can't remember any music from the previous ones.
I think I prefer XMvSF, but I also enjoyed MvC2, though that music has to go.
I agree on the music. It provides the perfect amount of dissonance.Quote:

I say it is a serious fighter. Sure it may not compare to many of the earlier SNK fighters, but what does? There is a ton of variety and a lot to master and NOT everyone is a corner-trapping, infinite-using player. There are a lot of us who focus on mastering the game without being cheap.
If you can find a few mid-level players, ones who have the game mastered pretty well with all characters yet don't resort to infinites or traps, then the game is a lot of fun. Mixing it up to make teams that have maximum block damage or other cool "themes" is great. Hell I've played games just to try and get one move off and if it suceeds, it's really cool...like doing Jill's dash super, continuing with Zangief's spinning pile driver super, and finishing with Ryus level 3 uppercut super...the game is amazingly versatile, you just have to get away from the few characters everyone else uses and play with people that are willing to mix it up a bit, then it's a lot of fun and challenging.
It's a shame that many of you have never had the chance to enjoy the game competetively because of a couple players who exploit traps and other "cheap" moves. Not everyone uses Cable and Magneto and other cheap characters and besides these "traps" are avoidable, it just takes really good timing. I have had more fun with this fighter than any other.
It's really exciting to go to an arcade and beat good players with unconventional teams...try BB Hood, Jin, and T. Bonne for a good team not a lot of people use. Or try Servebot, Spiral, and Sabertooth for some serious block damage and juggling.
Well, Xmen VS Streefighter was great. Something really unique for its time. But MVC2 is just has much more to offer. Both are great games, and must be owned, but MVC2 wins just in sheer variety of things it offers.
About the music. In stage music was not bad. But I HATE "I wanna take for the friking ride" song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ohh come on now people.
The select screen music is catchy not to mention it is sooo adlib-able that it allows you to taunt the hell out of your friends.
Good thing none of my crew can execute the "CraZy" cable combos.
Just this past weekend, we broke it out and had a blast.
Oh yeah...I just love it when I get hit by that single shot in the air, which breaks my guard causing me to be supered in the air and then again before I even hit the ground...Cable is one evil b!@%$#^Quote:

There's a similarly annoying combo by Sentinel where you get trapped in his missle super...
Come to think of it, I can understand why someone new to the game would be discouraged by some of the evil players out there...
I'm glad to note that some people in the world still have taste.
In terms of options and extras and whatnot, MvsC2 wins. Duh. BUT, if you're good at SF, and your buddy's good at SF, and you want to play a Vs. game and actually test out some skill, then you should go with either XvsSF or MSHvsSF, or even MvsC (if you don't abuse those lame Juggernaut and Colossus helpers). I know the others have infinites and whatnot in them, too, but NOWHERE near the super-abusive (and yes, even CHEAP) level that MvsC2 has.
