10.12.03 - Sammy plans according to a report of the Bloomberg new agency to expand the arcade business in overseas markets, after becoming the largest shareholder in Sega.

Sammy-President Hajime Satomi sees the arcade business as more profitable than developing software for home consoles. He is encouraging Sega to expand its arcade business and reduce production of games for home consoles.

Satomi especially wants to promote development projects for Sammy’s own Atomiswave-Board, for which arcade machines can be produced cheaply.

I'm all for it. If they can get people interested in arcades again, and have arcade business pick up again, I won't need to drive 4 hours to get to the nearest one.

I'm also all for it. The arcades could use a boost, and this could do it. Sega's home games don't sell well enough to justify this not happening. Who knows, maybe Sega's home games will sell better due to there being less of them. Too much Sega goodness can be a bad thing, after all, and hard to afford as well.

I see a mass exodus of Sega employees in the near future.

The thing is, Sega was already supporting the arcade scene more than any company. They had a good balance between arcade and console gaming. If this results in console-ish games like Shenmue getting the axe, it's not a good thing.

It isn't a good thing if it results in games being canned, however, if it results in Sega teams reducing the amount of games they develop, and allows them to increase the quality of the "few" games they can develop, then it shouldn't be a bad thing. It can definitely go either way. After all, is it worth risking Sega's console games for a slight chance at revitalizing the stagnant arcades?
