Yea, well... they suck.

How come Sean Astin wasn't nominated? And ROTK should've gotten a screenwriting nomination. Oh well.

Let's face it folks, if ROTK's ass isn't kissed by every single award show for the next 4 months (or whatever), something is seriously wrong.

Wow.... those are some pretty dismal selections. I mean, they deserve to be there, but man.... wow. I hope Depp wins for Sparrow, but I doubt he will.

diffx: I'm not sure if ROTK can be considered from a screenwriting perspective because it is based off of a novel. I know they alter it for the visuals, and screenwriting is more than just words (screenplay is the words, I believe), but I think to be taken as a serious contender you've gotta do it all from the ground up.

The Oscars do have seperate awards for original and adapted. The Golden Globes do not, but they have honored adapted screenplays before - in 2002, A Beautiful Mind won, in 2001, Traffic won (based off a television series), in 2000, Cider House Rules was nominated, need I go on?

I am somewhat disappointed that The Last Samurai didn't get any direct nominations other then actors and musical score.

I would love for Ken Watanabi to win for his performance in The Last Samurai. He was wonderfull.

I guess, the more traditional US-like ending, thats what prevented many critics from giving LS more praise. Hence the results here.

What else could be expected though? I mean Cruise could've died or whatever I guess, but even so the movie contained a message and actually demonstrated something unlike most Hollywood movies. It went against conventional movie making and was highly succesful because of it.

Don't be stupid. A lot of movies don't do either of those, but those movies don't get nominated and win awards, either. Do you see Matrix Revolutions on that list?

Great movies are those that "contain a message and demonstrate something" (that is so vague, too). How many have you actually went through the trouble of watching?

You may have wished for Last Samurai to be on there, but you know, maybe those five are just better? Or maybe the studios pushed for those 5 more (at least that's the case with anything Miramax puts out).

And besides, Last Samurai didnt exactly set the world's heart on fire: 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. And its not like it blew the world up, either - $25 million opening weekend, nearly 50% drop-off second week. So I wouldnt even say it was "highly successful".

Now, I know Despair thinks movie reviewers are clueless (which is ironic) and that there are conspiracy theories against all the movies he likes, but hey...
