Last night when I went to see Big Fish, I caught a trailer for a movie I had heard a few raves reviews of, the animated French feature The Triplets of Belleville. I was more than intrigued by the trailer (which you can watch here), and I'm really eager to see this.
They played the trailer during the "coming soon" part of the trailers. I know it's currently playing in a few locations, but nothing near me. Is it getting a wide release soon? I'd really like to see this in the theatre.
Hmm... I remember Mr. Sqoon mentioning this one some months ago... And I just saw a mini-review in the newspaper last night. Convenient.
The concept vaguely reminds me of Cat Soup... Might have to take a ride up into New York sometime this week.
Certainly is gorgeous.
The movie finally opened in my area just yesterday so now it's only a matter of finding the a time to go.
It probably won't get a wide release. Spirited Away didn't get that much distribution and that was an anime, backed by Miyazaki, Lasseter, and Disney. The only way this will get a jump in distribution if it wins the Oscar, and that probably won't happen since a foreign movie won last year and Finding Nemo is pretty much a shoo-in.
If it gets even half the distribution of Spirited Away, I'll have no trouble seeing it. Problem is, even the indie-film-devoted theatres aren't showing it here. Spirited away was playing at like 4 or 5 theatres within reach. This isn't playing at any.Quote:

There's really no good way to break it down in a few sentences, but it was certainly enjoyable. The overall animation and little nuances were really stylish and it all looked highly polished. Particularly, the retro b&w intro. was fantastic.
The whole lack of dialogue bit worked out really well... it was similar to Cat Soup in this aspect, at least. I really enjoyed how everything played out without so much as a single comprehendible exchange between any two characters. It was all about the mannerisms and what you visually perceive.
Jesus... almost forgot: the music. Fantubulous. I don't want to give anything away, but... Those Triplets get pretty creative later in the film with some household objects. Great stuff.
Good stuff. Too bad I don't know that much about French culture, because I'm sure there would be even more jokes to pick up.
Theater down the block from me will be getting this on 2/13. The trailer doesn't look terribly interesting but I really like the music so I'll probably check it out (please tell me there's music like that throughout). I think there was a review of this (it was at least a mention) in a local paper, so I suppose there's the chance that the college theater just got this.

I really liked it. It was surprisingly slow in the beginning (I've never seen an animated feature length just so in love with animation) but gains momentum pretty quickly and the action/chase scene was awesome. Reminds me of The Iron Giant: there's only one scene of extended violence and they really do make it count without being tasteless.
What really struck me with the movie is that it was such a great homage to vaudeville hall acts like Maurice Chevalier/Fred Astaire and classic French cinema (I don't like the idea of full movie homages but there aren't enough of these type). The movie just completely embraced its roots (there's a poster for Mr. Hulot's Holiday in the triplettes apartment and the movie they watch in their bedroom is Jour de Fete, another movie about bicylicng which I've never seen but I recognized it by the music). The gentle pacing and lack of dialogue is really reminiscent of Jacques Tati. Hell, even the grandson looks like Jacques Tati.Quote:

Saw this tonight, and absolutely loved every minute of it...
The animation was just wonderful.
Turns out my local theater has this, so I may have to go see it.
