I will make things very clear here: there is no downside, no muddiness, no nothing that you are trying to pin on 5.1 sound to be had with it. In fact, the only reason why anyone has 5.1 sound is because its richer and clearer, in every way. In fact, I dare say I have never heard anything more ludicrous on this board.

Yeah, I also put all my speakers right around my head and I make sure that I can hear everything.
The way sound comes to our ear is not direct. Sound is just like light in a sense, the further away it is the less you hear and our ears are shaped to hear the most from the front half rather than the back half. Though that is not to say it isn't more realistic to have sound from a game comind from behind you be aslo from behind the character in the game. Just not as clear.
I voted Xbox btw... but PC was a remarkably close consideration.
Oh brother OK firstly sound is heard clearer when it travels straight from the source (say a speaker) right in front of you. It is true sounds are heard from sources not directly in front of you (obviously) BUT there is no earhole on the BACK of your ear ;)
The sound from behind you, for example, has to bounce on walls and other objects before it gets to your ear and of course since the sound directly in front of you gets to your ear first and without bouncing around it IS clearer and less muffled/distinct than sound that has to bounce around the room before it enters your ear.

In dhowerter's world, a videogame which wants to simulate audio coming from an area that's not directly in front of the player's face will sound better bouncing from behind the player as opposed to actually having speakers there.
Crazy physics, I know, but it works. Because it's fun. His planet's physics also affect gravity, you should see the crazy amount of weight this motherfugger can bench.
Real life would be better if all sound was directed at me from the front. Then I'd have no fucking clue that there's a car behind me that's about to run me over, or that a bird is flying over head and about to drop a load in my direction.
There's a reason why you can hear stuff behind you and you can tell that it's behind you.
Most games don't take advantage of surround sound, even if they support it, but no game ever sounds worse in surround sound than if it were from just a couple of speakers in front of you. Having an orchestral score surround you while you explore can completely immerse you in a game, unlike a regular one or two speaker set-up. Any sound effects that surround you will immerse you tons more than if they're just in front of you.
And then of course some games do take full advantage of surround sound (not every game needs to). Games like SOCOM, where you can hear where enemy gun fire is coming from...even if it's behind you. Surround sound support is an awesome feature, and why anyone would argue against it is beyond me.
There's no real way you can simulate a sound coming from behind using only front speakers. Your brain knows if sound is coming from behind because there is an extra auditory shadow created by your auricle which attenuates the signals intensity, it cuts out the high frequencies which can't penetrate your auricle.
You know where a sound is coming from through triangulation, between the difference in the signal recieved by your left and right ears. However your brain does a lot of other processing, including comparison of the main signal with its reverberation.
So becuase the signal that comes from the back is attenuated by your auricle, the ratio compared to the "reverberation" is different to if it would've come from the front.
Try passing your finger from your eye to your ear, and then pass it from the back of your head to your ear. Which side got caught by your ear, biatch?

From my experience on Xbox Live (with Mech Assault and Wolfenstein) there are some pretty retarded people online. I had much more problems with Mech Assault players than Wolfenstein, though. Of course, playing on the Internet you're always going to play with the idiots of the world which is why I generally steer clear of the scene altogether.
If I had to put them in order of what game has the most annoying people it'd easily be PSO, MechAssault, and Wolfenstein. They're making their way into PGR2, but I normally play with people I know. Which brings up another point, you don't have to play with assholes.
Sure, you don't have to play with assholes as long as you know 15 other people that have the same game as you and play on Xbox Live.
If you want to play online with a lot of people, yes you do have to play with assholes. Which is why LAN play/split screen will forever be superior to Internet play. If my friend's being a dumbass I can smack him. If some idiot online is being a dumbass then too bad, go find a new game. It's always nice having to work around idiots.

i used to whine about online games, too. before i got xbox live. you have to realize that you'll run into idiots in any live game, but if you're somewhat careful with your friends list, it won't be long before you're in games with nothing but cool people.

So how is it that when I'm playing something like say, Counter-Strike on XBOX I can automatically tell when someone is behind me? A bit of both, but you're not insane. Some developers will slightly muffle sounds coming from behind so they sound different to sounds coming from the front. Your brain will notice the difference, collate it with the fact you can't see anything shooting at you, and then spit it out as the impression something is behind you. When I play Rogue Sqaudron II, a tie fighter that's circling around my ship, does so by going from speaker to speaker on my supposed Pro-Logic II like reciever. Resident Evil Remake sounds great on my system. If there's a zombie to my rear left, I hear it that way on my speakers as well. If a zombie is to my rear right, I hear it that way as well.
So what is the big advantage to 5.1 over Pro-Logic II? Or is it that my system is some sort just of hybrid to the 5.1 surround sound model?
Pro Logic II is analogue, it gets two channels (stereo) and splits it into four.
Dolby 5.1 is digital, it comes from six/five pre-recorded channels and outputs them as such.
Pro Logic II is analogue and splits a stereo track into five.
Dolby 5.1 is digital, it decodes from a six track recording and outputs them from their respective speakers.
So when you are doing the test, you're not actually hearing TRUE 5.1, the game console is converting the six digital tracks into two analogue stereo tracks, then your digital encoder processes those two tracks into five tracks and then outputs them from your speakers.
They'd basically sound pratically the same, only wankers would care or be able to tell the difference.

I've done a lot of his comparisions myself after he's tried to bring them up and pointed that out on multiple occasions; he's either voluntarily blinded or his Xbox is broken. This is from memory, so it could be slightly off -- but not much. I have realized that one of the many reasons the xbox doesn't sell well is that frankly most rooms don't have enough room for a ps2, gc and an xbox (kind of a retarded 'omg xbox big' joke -- but its real enough.) I want to get one over here, but it would require a lot of room I don't have.
So... here is where I need a kick in the ass. Tell me how awesome PGR2 is and tell me how great Ninja Gaiden will be. Tell me how I need this system just for these two games -- Do I?
(p.s. I have had the system since release and it rarely got played -- rarely.)
PGR2 is fantastic, but I feel it'd be crippled without Live.

That's enough if you have an HDTV. I didn't at one time, and I used to buy a lot of multi platform games on the GameCube. Since then, I've smartened up and realized that full HDTV and Dolby Digital support beats out shoddy HDTV support and Pro Logic II every single time.Quote:

Dolby Digital is great when developers actually make a good 5.1 mix for the games but most dont, Halo has a great 5.1 mix but most multiplatform games dont, developers seem to half ass the 5.1 mix
Im not overly fond of the S controller personally
i really dislike the placement of the white and black buttons and the start and back buttons
